  • In the shared-memory mutiprocessor systems, shared processing techniques such as time-sharing, space¬sharing, and gang-scheduling are used to improve the overall system utilization for the parallel operations. Recently, LLPC(Loop-Level Process Control) allocation technique was proposed. It dynamically adjusts the needed number of processors for the execution of the parallel code portions based on the current system load in the given job. This method allocates as many available processors as possible, and does not save any processors for the parallel sections of other later-arriving applications. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a new processor allocation technique called FPA(Fuzzy Processor Allocation) that dynamically adjusts the number of processors by fuzzifYing the amounts ofueeded number of processors, loads, and estimated execution times of job. The proposed method provides the maximum possibility of the parallism of each job without system overload. We compare the performances of our approaches with the conventional results. The experiments show that the proposed method provides a better performance.

  • This paper concerns Fuzzy Radial Basis Function Neural Network (FRBFNN) and automatic rule generation of extraction of the FRBFNN by means of mountain clustering. In the proposed network, the membership functions of the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms such as Gaussian, ellipsoidal, triangular, etc., so its resulting fitness values (degree of membership) directly rely on the computation of the relevant distance between data points. Also, we consider high-order polynomial as the consequent part of fuzzy rules which represent input-output characteristic of sup-space. The number of clusters and the centers of clusters are automatically generated by using mountain clustering method based on the density of data. The centers of cluster which are obtained by using mountain clustering are used to determine a degree of membership and weighted least square estimator (WLSE) is adopted to estimate the coefficients of the consequent polynomial of fuzzy rules. The effectiveness of the proposed model have been investigated and analyzed in detail for the representative nonlinear function.

  • In clustering for image segmentation, large amount of computation and typical segmentation errors have been important problems. In the paper, we suggest a new method for minimizing these problems. Markers in marker-controlled watershed transform represent segmented areas because they are starting-points of extending areas. Thus, clustering restricted by marker pixels can reduce computational complexity. In our proposed method, the markers are selected by Gabor texture energy, and cluster information of them are generated by FCM (fuzzy c-mean) clustering. Generated areas from watershed transform are merged by using cluster information of markers. In the test of Brodatz' texture images, we improved typical partition-errors obviously and obtained less computational complexity compared with previous FCM clustering algorithms. Overall, it also took regular computational time.

  • In this paper, an adaptive Bayesian approach to image segmentation was developed for boundary detection. Both image intensities and texture information were used for obtaining better quality of the image segmentation by using the C programming language. Fuzzy c-mean clustering was applied fer the conditional probability density function, and Gibbs random field model was used for the prior probability density function. To simply test the algorithm, a synthetic image (256$\times$256) with a set of low gray values (50, 100, 150 and 200) was created and normalized between 0 and 1 n double precision. Results have been presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in segmenting the synthetic image, resulting in more than 99% accuracy when noise characteristics are correctly modeled. The algorithm was applied to the Antarctic mosaic that was generated using 1963 Declassified Intelligence Satellite Photographs. The accuracy of the resulting vector map was estimated about 300-m.

  • The purpose of video segmentation is to segment video sequence into shots where each shot represents a sequence of frames having the same contents, and then select key frames from each shot for indexing. There are two types of shot changes, abrupt and gradual. The major problem of shot change detection lies on the difficulty of specifying the correct threshold, which determines the performance of shot change detection. As to the clustering approach, the right number of clusters is hard to be found. Different clustering may lead to completely different results. In this thesis, we propose a video segmentation method using a color-X$^2$ intensity histogram-based fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study is to test the applicability of neuro-fuzzy system for monthly dam inflow forecasts by using weather forecasting information. The neuro-fuzzy algorithm adopted in this study is the ANFIS(Adaptive neuro-fuzzy Inference System) in which neural network theory is combined with fuzzy theory. The ANFIS model can experience the difficulties in selection of a control rule by a space partition because the number of control value increases rapidly as the number of fuzzy variable increases. In an effort to overcome this drawback, this study used the subtractive clustering which is one of fuzzy clustering methods. Also, this study proposed a method for converting qualitative weather forecasting information to quantitative one. ANFIS for monthly dam inflow forecasts was tested in cases of with or without weather forecasting information. It can be seen that the model performances obtained from the use of past observed data and future weather forecasting information are much better than those from past observed data only.

  • Cluster based fuzzy model tree has certain drawbacks to decrease performance of testinB data when over-fitting of training data exists. To reduce the sensitivity of performance due to over-fitting problem, we proposed a modified cluster based fuzzy model tree with node information. To construct model tree, cluster centers are calculated by fuzzy clustering method using all input and output attributes in advance. And then, linear models are constructed at internal nodes with fuzzy membership values between centers and input attributes. In the prediction step, membership values are calculated by using fuzzy distance between input attributes and all centers that passing the nodes from root to leaf nodes. Finally, data prediction is performed by the weighted average method with the linear models and fuzzy membership values. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have applied our method to various dataset. Under various experiments, our proposed method shows better performance than conventional cluster based fuzzy model tree.

  • Clustering, a technique for the analysis of the genes, organizes the patterns into groups by the similarity of the dataset and has been used for identifying the functions of the genes in the cluster or analyzing the functions of unknown gones. Since the genes usually belong to multiple functional families, fuzzy clustering methods are more appropriate than the conventional hard clustering methods which assign a sample to a group. In this paper, a Bayesian validation method is proposed to evaluate the fuzzy partitions effectively. Bayesian validation method is a probability-based approach, selecting a fuzzy partition with the largest posterior probability given the dataset. At first, the proposed Bayesian validation method is compared to the 4 representative conventional fuzzy cluster validity measures in 4 well-known datasets where foray c-means algorithm is used. Then, we have analyzed the results of Saccharomyces cell cycle expression data evaluated by the proposed method.

  • The mathematical models for GIS-based spatial data integration have been developed for geological applications such as mineral potential mapping or landslide susceptibility analysis. Among various models, the effectiveness of fuzzy logic based integration of multiple sets of geological data is investigated and discussed. Unlike a traditional target-driven fuzzy integration approach, we propose a data-driven approach that is derived from statistical relationships between the integration target and related spatial geological data. The proposed approach consists of four analytical steps; data representation, fuzzy combination, defuzzification and validation. For data representation, the fuzzy membership functions based on the likelihood ratio functions are proposed. To integrate them, the fuzzy inference network is designed that can combine a variety of different fuzzy operators. Defuzzification is carried out to effectively visualize the relative possibility levels from the integrated results. Finally, a validation approach based on the spatial partitioning of integration targets is proposed to quantitatively compare various fuzzy integration maps and obtain a meaningful interpretation with respect to future events. The effectiveness and some suggestions of the schemes proposed here are illustrated by describing a case study for landslide susceptibility analysis. The case study demonstrates that the proposed schemes can effectively identify areas that are susceptible to landslides and ${\gamma}$ operator shows the better prediction power than the results using max and min operators from the validation procedure.

  • This paper proposes a new design method of neuro-FLC by the Lamarckian co-adaptation scheme that incorporates the backpropagation learning into the GA evolution in an attempt to find optimal design parameters (fuzzy rule base and membership functions) of application-specific FLC. The design parameters are determined by evolution and learning in a way that the evolution performs the global search and makes inter-FLC parameter adjustments in order to obtain both the optimal rule base having high covering value and small number of useful fuzzy rules and the optimal membership functions having small approximation error and good control performance while the learning performs the local search and makes intra-FLC parameter adjustments by interacting each FLC with its environment. The proposed co-adaptive design method produces better approximation ability because it includes the backpropagation learning in every generation of GA evolution, shows better control performance because the used COG defuzzifier computes the crisp value accurately, and requires small workspace because the optimization procedure of fuzzy rule base and membership functions is performed concurrently by an integrated fitness function on the same fuzzy partition. Simulation results show that the Lamarckian co-adapted FLC produces the most superior one among the differently generated FLCs in all aspects such as the number of fuzzy rules, the approximation ability, and the control performance.
