  • In this study, the effect of different silt contents on the shear characteristics of silty sands was evaluated. Two series of triaxial compression tests were performed on the cylindrical specimens of compacted Nakdong river sand with 10% and 30% silt contents under unconsolidated undrained condition. All identical specimens were prepared to compact with same initial water content for five layers and saturated using control panel and then sheared under initial effective confining pressure, 100 to 400kPa. All specimens exhibited a strain softening tendency after failure in stress-strain curves and deviator stresses of specimens with 10% silt content were greater than those of specimens with 30% silt content. Pore water pressures of specimens with 10% silt content were observed negative(i.e. swelling) due to increasing void ratio after failure but those of specimens with 30% silt content were shown only positive. The behavior of compacted cylindrical specimens with low silt content was more dilative than that of high silt content. Peak deviator stresses decreased as increasing silt content and peak pore water pressures increased as increasing silt content.

예를 들면 who_server(), who_queue(), pop_Q(), push_Q(), pop_server(), push_server(), we(), wf(), printfct() 같은 함수들이다. • It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to acid and sulfate environments such as sewer, sewage and wastewater, soil, groundwater, and seawater etc. show significant decrease in their durability due to chemical attack. Such deleterious acid and sulfate attacks lead to expansion and cracking in concrete, and thus, eventually result in damage to concrete matrix by forming expansive hydration products due to the reaction between portland cement hydration products and acid and sulfate ions. Objectives of this experimental research are to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures on the resistance to acid and sulfate attack in concrete and to suggest high-resistance concrete mix against acid and sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes specimens with three types of cement (ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC) composed of different types and proportions of admixtures) were prepared at water-biner ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in fresh water, 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium sulfate, and 10% magnesium sulfate solutions for 28, 56, 91, 182, and 365 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to acid and sulfate for concrete specimens, visual appearance changes were observed and compressive strength ratios and mass change ratios were measured. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate solutions of the concretes containing mineral admixtures were much better than that of OPC concrete, but in the case of magnesium sulfate solution the concretes containing mineral admixtures was less resistant than OPC concrete due to formation of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) which is non-cementitious.

  • In this paper, simulation works for a multi-stage cascade refrigeration cycle using propane, ethylene and methane as refrigerants have been performed for the liquefaction of natural gas using Peng-Robinson equation of state built-in PRO/II with PROVISION release 8.3. The natural gas feed compositions were supplied from Korea Gas Corporation and the flow rate was assumed to be 5.0 million tons per annual. Supply temperature for propane refrigerant was fixed as $-40^{\circ}C$, that for ethylene refrigerant as $-95^{\circ}C$, and that for methane refrigerant as $-155^{\circ}C$. For the multi-stage refrigeration cycle, three-stage refrigeration was assumed for propane refrigeration cycle, two-stage refrigeration for ethylene refrigeration cycle and three-stage refrigeration for methane refrigeration cycle. Natural gas was finally cooled and liquefied to $-162^{\circ}C$ by Joule-Thomson expansion. Conclusively, 91.71% by mole of the natural gas liquefaction ratio was obtained through a cascade refrigeration cycle and Joule-Thomson expansion and 0.433 kW of compression power was consumed for the liquefaction of 1.0 kg/hr of natural gas.

  • Torsional behavior of concrete pavement slabs due to temperature and moisture effects is constrained by self weight and friction etc, and causes stress as the result. The stress due to humidity variation in the slab is difficult to calculate while that due to temperature variation can easily be calculated by a commercial structural analysis program. Thus, the slab behavior can be predicted more accurately if the humidity effect is converted to equivalent temperature and is used as an input of structural analysis. In this study, a concrete pavement slab was constructed and strains of the slab due to environmental loadings were measured for long-term period. Thermal strains were subtracted from the measured strains by using thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete measured in a laboratory. Shrinkage strains, the remained strains, was supposed as additional thermal strains to calculate imaginary temperature with equivalent effect of the shrinkage by dividing the shrinkage with the thermal expansion coefficient. An existing shrinkage model was modified by considering the self weight and friction to be used in another model which can convert differential shrinkage between top and bottom of the slab to equivalent temperature difference. Addition research efforts on tensile stress reduction according to steady increase in the compressive strains are warranted for more accurate stress calculation.

  • As household and industrial wastes continue to rapidly increase every year, the demands for landfill sites are also increasing. However, the construction of landfill sites causes many problems due to the high costs of liners, while the leachate from the landfills generates secondary contamination of surrounding lands and groundwater. The purpose of this study is to determine the proper mixing ratio to meet the liner conditions (must be less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$), using the local soil as the main material and using fly ash, bentonite, and cement as the mixing materials. The possibility of using this mixture as the liner for landfill sites was examined. To determine the proper mixing ratio, this study conducted basic physical properties tests, compaction tests, consolidation tests, and uniaxial compression tests. It was found that the higher the ratio of bentonite, the lower the coefficient of permeability, and the higher the ratio of fly ash, the higher the coefficient of permeability. The reason for this is that, while bentonite expands and fills pores, fly ash cannot fill the pores because the particles have a round shape and do not have adhesion. In conclusion, the optimum coefficient of permeability that meets the landfill liner condition was obtained when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher. If fly ash was mixed, the landfill liner condition was met when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher and the ratio of fly ash was 20% or lower.

  • The effects of non-woven geotextiles on mechanical behavior of sand were investigated. A comprehensive series of triaxial compression tests were performed for these investigation on unreinforced and reinforced sand with geotextiles. The Joomunjin standard sand was used and non-woven geotextiles were included into sand specimen with three layers. The inclusion of non-woven geotextile reinforcement into sand increased the peak strength of sand significantly and the reinforced samples exhibited a greater axial strain at failure. Also the effect on number of reinforcement layers was studied and found as increasing the number of reinforcement layers resulting in more ductility by clogging developed in the shear band within the specimens. It was also found that the tendency of samples to dilate is restricted by non-woven geotextile inclusion. The effect of nunber of reinforcement layer increasing is just same to the effect of decreasing void ratio of sand in this case.

  • In the present work, novel biocomposites made with biodegradable Lyocell woven fabrics and poly (butylene succinate) were successfully fabricated for the first time. Lyocell/poly(butylene succinate) biocomposites with different fiber loadings of 0, 30, 40, 50 and 60 wt% were prepared by compression molding with a sheet interleaving manner. The effect of Lyocell fabric loading on the interlaminar shear strength, tensile and flexural properties, heat deflection temperature, thermal expansion behavior, and thermal stability of the biocomposites was investigated. The properties strongly depended on the fabric loading and the results were consistent with each other. It was demonstrated that the Lyocell fabrics played a remarkable role in improving the properties of poly(butylene succinate) resin by incorporating the fabrics into the resin. The greatest inter-laminar, tensile, flexural and thermal properties of the biocomposites were obtained with Lyocell fabrics of 50% by weight.

  • Multipurpose Floor Level Joint(MFLJ) is a new construction technology system which was developed in domestic. By using this system, it is possible not only to absorb the deformation at expansion joint due to shrinkages of concrete but also to make ease the floor leveling during the concrete casting at floor. The system consists of two elements, supporting devices and rails. Their structural capacities were verified through several experimental programs, such as compressive strength test of support and bending test of rail. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the deformation absorbing capacity of the floor level joint. An experimental work was carried out to simulate the deformation condition at the joint and the test result was analyzed and evaluated. In addition, FEM analysis for expansion joint of typical building was also performed to predict the real behavior of MFLJ. The test results showed that MFLJ has sufficient deformation capacity required to act as expansion joint.

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate thrust characteristics of a through-type pintle nozzle with or without flow separation at various operating altitudes. The low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ with compressibility correction proposed by Sarkar are applied. The detail flow structures are observed and static pressures along nozzle wall are compared with experimental results. The flow separation in the pintle nozzle disappears and jet plume strongly expands as its operating altitude increases. To evaluate the thrust characteristics, the momentum term and pressure term of thrust are analyzed. Thrust and thrust coefficient at altitude 20 km are about 10% more than them at the ground 0km.
