  • The conventional representative underground cavity restoration methods, which are mainly open-cut methods, require high cost and long period of time for the restoration. Therefore, various trenchless restoration methods have been proposed to improve these disadvantages. The underground cavity restoration method using the expansive material proposed in this paper is one of the trenchless methods. This method fills the underground cavity with high quality backfill soils through the small hole(s) at asphalt layer and compacts backfill soils by insertion of the expansive material within the cavity. In this study, the restoration method using expansive material was constructed in acrylic chamber. The restoration efficiency of the method was analyzed by the fill ratio and degree of relative compaction according to the location and number of bore holes. As a result of the experiment, the restoration efficiency and the optimum construction location were found to be irrelevant.

  • The dehydration of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)-exchanged montmorillonite has been studied using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dehydration in HDTMA-montmorillonite seems to influence the swelling behavior of the organo-clay during heating. The basal d(001) spacing vs temperature curve of the HDTMA-montmorillonite has one broad swelling edge with a shoulder on the low-temperature side. We believe that the shoulder at $100^{\circ}C$ for the HDTMA-montmorillonite is due to interlayer swelling induced by the initial rearrangement of surfactants, and the second edge at $200^{\circ}C$ is caused by interlayer swelling resulting from the secondary vertical reorientation of alkyl chains. It seems that the dehydration of organo-clay induces a reorientation of the alkyl chains by transition to more vertical position relative to the silicate sheets, allowing instantly greater d-spacing.

  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

  • Existing cast in place piles made by grouting cement mortar have many problems that cracks by autogeneous and drying shrinkage bring about the deterioration of force for piles, segregations by the submersion of ground water occur and also, high cement contents lead to rise the manufacturing cost. Therefore, this study is intended to investigate the mechanical properties of high performance mortar, incorporating expansive additives and fly ash. for cast in place piles. According to the experimental results, as the contents of expansive additives increase in mortar mixture, fluidity decrease and air contents shows inverse tendency. Setting time is delayed. Although compressive strength at 7days shows a decline tendency. compressive strength at 28days and 91days increase slightly with 5% of expansive additives. As fly ash increase in mortar mixture, high fluidity is shown, air contents increase and setting time is delayed at fresh state, and additives are, the larger length change is, whereas shrinkage decrease with the increase of fly ash.

  • Lidocaine compounds have widely been used as local anesthetics. Regarding the molecular mechanism for anesthesia by lidocaine, it is proposed that lidocaine molecules penetrate to the hydrophobic region of cell membrane and expand the membrane volume, producing a change in protein conformation that blocks sodium permeability or lidocaine molecules directly adsorb into lidocaine receptor in the protein channel without expanding the cell membrane. But these proposals have never been proven experimentally. In this study, the expansion of cell membrane by lidocaine compounds was investigated by employing lipid monolayer at the air/water interface as the mimetic system of cell membrane. It was found that oil-soluble lidocaine contracted the area/molecule of lipid in the monolayer of phosphatidyl choline, sphingomyelin, DS-PL95E and lipoid, but expanded the monolayer of phosphatidyl ethanolamine only in a certain range of mixing ratios. On the contrary, water-soluble lidocaine-HCl salt expanded the monolayers of all lipids used in this study.

  • The interest in the use of shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) on the tunnel excavation has been increased rapidly in Korea. The shield TBM tunnel is generally designed as non-drainage tunnel. Consequently, if water leakage through the segment joints happens, big problems on the usage and stability of tunnel can be occurred. In this study, the variation of waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop by the construction error and excessive displacement of segment was studied firstly. Secondly, the decrease of durability of hydrophilic waterstop by the sulphate and chloride contained in the groundwater and seawater was investigated. The results showed that if the angle discordance at the segment joints is beyond the 2 degree, the proper waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop can not be guaranteed. In addition, if the hydrophilic rubber waterstop is exposed to the sulphate for a while, the proper durability of hydrophilic waterstop can not be expected.

  • A method to reduce the Contraction and Expansion (CE) noise occurred in an air conditioner is investigated. The noise is measured during the cooling and heating phases in a temperature and humidity chamber to identify the generating phenomenon of CE noise of the air conditioner and the decomposition method is used to estimate its occurrence location. The CE noise of an air conditioner is known to be caused by a stick-slip phenomenon generated by joints of parts connected to the lower decor. Thus a friction experiment was conducted to investigate noise inducing factors. Also, this study established evaluation criteria to effectively analyze the results from friction experiments. Experimental results indicate that increasing surface roughness on both sides of joints is effective. Accordingly, the effect of increased surface roughness on joints of upper and lower decor of air conditioners is evaluated to see its feasibility in a temperature and humidity chamber.

  • It has been recently reported that the presence of sulphate causes abnormal volume changes in lime-stabilized soils. Volume changes in lime-stabilized soils can take place due to sulphate compounds such as ettringite. Sulphate compounds caused a variety of serious geotechnical hazards such as swelling pressure and damages to light structures and pavements. This paper discusses the influence of sulphate on the soil specimens treated with quicklime and chemical additives. The physical and mechanical characteristics were studied by means of laboratory tests. The results showed that the presence of sulphate treated soil reduced the shear strength of the lime treated soils and increased the swelling properties. SEM and XRD results indicated that the presence of sulphate producted needle-like crystals such as ettringite. Moreover, the role of needle-like crystals in specimen was probably related to the swelling properties.

  • A study was conducted to determine the characteristics of acoustic emission(AE) events generated by the expansive cement induced rock fracturing. The dominant frequency and the maximum amplitude of the AE events are changed in relation to the rate of expansive pressure development in the hole. The dominant frequencies are in the range of 150∼230kHz for the small hole tests and 400∼500kHz for the large hole test. The maximum amplitudes are in the range of 0.015∼0.050cm/sec and 0.025∼0.064cm/sec, respectively. The fact that AE events of higher amplitude with higher frequency on the large hole test and lower amplitude with lower frequency on the small hole tests were detected, may strongly imply that the amount of energy consumed for a macro-crack in both tests may be similar. The expansive cement induced crack propagates stably without any distinguished event having higher amplitude and this implies that a macro-crack is a result of stable growth of micro cracks.

  • In order to prevent brittle failure of concrete, steel fiber reinforcement is effective composite material. However ductility of steel fiber reinforced concrete may be limited due to shrinkage caused by large content of cement binder. Chemical prestressing for steel fiber reinforcement in cement matrix can be induced through expansive admixture and this can increase reinforcing effect of steel fiber. In this study, mechanical performances in concrete with CSA (Calcium sulfoaluminate) expansive admixture and steel fiber reinforcement are evaluated. For this work, steel fiber reinforcement of 1 and 2% of volume ratio and CSA expansive admixture of 10% weight ratio of cement are added in concrete. Mechanical and fracture properties are evaluated in concrete with steel fiber reinforcement and CSA expansive admixture. CSA concrete with steel fiber reinforcement shows increase in tensile strength, initial cracking load, and ductility performance like enlarged fracture energy after cracking. With appropriate using expansive admixture and optimum ratio of steel fiber reinforcement, their interactive action can effectively improve brittle behavior in concrete.
