  • In this paper, we investigate the physical layer network coding (PNC) technique in a two-way relay channel (TWRC) where two source nodes send and receive data with each other via a relay node. In particular, we consider the communication scenario where packet length from the two sources is different from each other. We analyze the bit error rate (BER) of the received packet at the relay node according to degree of overlapping between two packets. The BER of the short packet remains unchanged regardless of the degree of overlapping since the entire packet is overlapped with the longer packet, while the BER of the longer packet becomes improved as the degree of overlapping decreases. Thus, we need a novel transmission scheme to enhance BER performance of the PNC technique in TWRC environments since the overall BER performance of the PNC technique at the relay node depends on the worse BER between two ovelapping packets' BERs.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multipath routing protocol and compare it with other multipath routing protocols in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) environments. The new multipath routing establishes the main route using a mechanism based on Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector(AODV), after which data transmission starts immediately. The backup route search process takes place while data are transmitted, to reduce the transmission delay. The protocol can also operate in a hybrid node-disjoint/link-disjoint mode, where the protocol finds the node-disjoint backup route first; if the node-disjoint does not exist, the protocol discovers the link-disjoint backup route from the main route. When either of the main route or the backup route is broken, data are transmitted continuously through the other route and the broken route is recovered by the route maintenance process. The results of simulations, based on the Qualnet simulator, show that the proposed multipath routing protocol increases the packet transmission success rate and reduces end-to-end delays, when compared with AODV and AOMDV protocols.

  • USNs (Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) such as IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee network share ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) frequency band with WiFi networks. Once both networks operate in a region, packet collision may happen because of frequency overlapping. To assure this possibility, we conducted experiments where WiFi and ZigBee communication networks had been installed in an area. As a result of the test, successful data transmission rate were reduced due to the frequency overlapping between a WiFi communication channel and a ZigBee communication band. To cope with this problem, we propose a collision avoidance algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, if frequency collision is sensed, new communication channel with different frequency band is allocated to each node. Performance of the proposed frequency collision avoidance algorithm was tested and the results were described.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multi-path routing protocol to provide reliable and stable data transmission in MANET that is composed of high-mobility nodes. The new multi-path routing establishes the main route by the mechanism based on AODV, and then finds the backup route that node-disjoint from the main route by making add nodes in the main route not participate in it. The data transmission starts immediately after finding the main route. And the backup route search process is taking place while data is transmitted to reduce the transmission delay. When either of the main route or the backup route is broken, data is transmitted continuously through the other route and the broken route is recovered to node-disjoint route by the route maintenance process. The result of the simulation based on the Qualnet simulator shows that the backup route exists 62.5% of the time when the main route is broken. And proposed routing protocol improved the packet transmission rate by 2~3% and reduced the end-to-end delay by 10% compared with AODV and AODV-Local Repair.

  • In the wireless sensor network, flooding is required for the dissemination of queries and event announcements. The simple flooding causes the implosion and the overlap problems, so the simple flooding may result in the reduced network lifetime. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the flooding overlay structure (FOS) so that the overhead caused by flooding can be reduced. We propose two variants of FOS mechanisms, the centralized FOS (CFOS) and the distributed FOS (DFOS). In CFOS, the sink collects the network topology information and selects forwarding nodes based on that information. On the other hand, DFOS allows each sensor node to decide whether to act as a forwarding node or not based on its local information. For the performance evaluation of our proposed mechanisms, we carry out NS-2 based simulations and compare ours with the simple flooding and the gossiping. The simulation results indicate that the proposed FOS mechanisms outperform the simple flooding in terms of the network lifetime and the gossiping in terms of the data delivery ratio.
