A simple analysis of atmospheric sulfur dioxide($SO_2$) pollution in industrial region was investigated using badge type passive samplers. It were set up in 76 locations and the $SO_2$ distribution evaluated along the boundary of land use type. It changed considerably both monthly and seasonally. Soil samples were also collected in 120 locations to investigate influence of sulfur dioxide pollution on soil and heavy metal distribution in the study area, where the sulfur dioxide pollutants from industrial area could affect the soil environment of near residential and green areas. The relationship between the $SO_2$ concentrations in the atmosphere and heavy metal(Cu, Pb) concentrations in the soil were analyzed, by using the correlation coefficient values and the results were 0.17 and 0.08 in industrial area. And this study indicated that the atmospheric pollution in industrial region affect the level of the soil pollution adjacent to the residential and green area. The study result may be used to define correlativity for establishing an exposure index. It will subsequently be used for a more precise assessment measuring the exposure of plants and inhabitants, for the purposes of a study en effects on health.

In this study, we measured the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Shiwha area by using active and passive sampler. We did a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the active sampler and passive sampler. In the case of the passive sampler, the average TVOC concentration of the industrial area was 1.86 times higher than that of the residential area. In the case of the active sampler, the average TVOC concentration of the industrial area was 1.07 times higher than that of the residential area. When using the passive sampler, the concentration of VOCs in the industrial area was noted to be higher than the concentration found in the residential area. However, when we used the thermal desorption tube, the concentration of residential area was higher rather than that of industrial area in some substances such as trichloroethylene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. Toluene was a larger percentage of the overall BTEX ratio. In case of the passive sampler, the relative ratio of toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene was higher in the industrial area than in the residential area. In contrast in case of the thermal desorption tube, the ratio of these substances was higher in the residential area rather than in the industrial area. The passive sampling in this study showed an appropriate method to analyze the temporal and spatial concentrations of air contaminants. This assessment would prove to be useful for its observance of standards or epidemical study.

This research was conducted on characteristic of offensive odors in Shihwa industrial complex. Result of blocks distribution of TVOC indicates that mechanic block, site D, was the highest concentration (74 ppb). Chemistry block, site A, was the second highest concentration (50 ppb). Also, mixed blocks, metal blocks and park etc. were measured almost similar concentration about 30 ppb, but mixed block, site F, was the place where concentrations were the smallest. Average of TVOC was shown about 35 ppb concentration. Aldehydes including acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde and hydrogen sulfide concentrations were prevalent among offensive odors in Shihwa industrial complex. Comparing the offensive odor intensity mostly about acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde and hydrogen sulfide which contain high offensive odor intensity showed results that sites A, B (chemistry block) and site D, I (mechanic block) site H (metal block) have showed the intensity over 1. In the case of acetaldehyde, relatively the high odor intensities over '2' were able to obtain in many cases. The correlation coefficient (r) for hydrogen sulfide was 0.91, so that high positive correlation exists between offensive odor intensity and the hydrogen sulfide element. Butyraldehyde also showed high positive correlation coefficient, as 0.82. Correlation coefficient of acetaldehyde that had the highest value as offensive odor substance was 0.62, had somewhat correlation with offensive odor intensity.

In this study, we investigated the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Shiwha area and compared the characteristics of both industrial area and residential area. The passive samplers were set 6 times each for a month in 21 locations at industrial and residential area to obtain 6 VOCs including benzene, trichlorobenzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene and stylene. Above all, toluene was the most abundant VOCs in the ambient air both in industrial and residential area. Average TVOC concentration of industrial area was 1.86 times higher than that of residential area, and it was greatly reduced in winter compared with summer. Furthermore, the average BTEX concentrations showed that all concentrations of industrial area were 1.94~5.39 times higher than those of residential area except benzene which were similar to each other. In winter, the concentration of ethyl benzene and xylene were significantly decreased by comparing with summer: but benzene concentrations were increased. Also, BTEX relative ratio was as follows: toluene>benzene>ethylbenzene>xylene. Correlation coefficients among VOCs were confirmed that VOCs in ambient air of industrial area were generally more related to each other than that of residential area. On the whole, the concentrations of VOCs in industrial area were higher, and it seems to be potential that industrial area affects the distribution of VOCs to residential area.

The ambient concentrations of nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) at 65 forest areas were measured every month using passive diffusive samplers from 2002 to 2009 and were compared to those at urban areas in order to investigate the characteristics of temporal and spatial distributions of $NO_2$ from the forest and urban areas. The annually averaged concentrations of $NO_2$ gradually decreased for both areas. The average concentration of $NO_2$ in the forest areas was 8.0 ppb, which was lower than that in the urban areas (i.e., 19.4 ppb) and the ecological standard level of the European Union (i.e., 14.6 ppb). The monthly average of $NO_2$ concentration depicted seasonal variations particularly in the urban areas, showing higher concentration in winter and lower concentration in summer. Strong locality of $NO_2$ concentration distribution illustrates that the locations near the metropolitan areas (e.g., Gyeonggi and Chungnam provinces) had the highest concentration during the measurement period. A significant positive correlation between $NO_x$ emissions and $NO_2$ concentration was observed, suggesting that the magnitude and proximity to sources of atmospheric nitrogen oxides would be important controlling factors.
In this study, formaldehyde concentrations in two exhibition halls were monitored using a passive sampler from May 2012 to April 2013. Formaldehyde concentrations in the exhibition halls were 5 to 36 times higher than concentrations outdoors. Concentrations inside the exhibition room and showcase varied according to pollutant source, HVAC(heating, ventilation, air conditioning)system and environment management. The formaldehyde concentration levels were corrected according to a standard method prescribed by Indoor Air Quality Management Law of the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, Most concentration levels exceeded the exhibition standard of the Ministry of Environment($100{\mu}g/m^3$) and artifacts conservation standard of Tokyo National Museum($50{\mu}g/m^3$). Seasonal concentrations in the exhibition room and showcase were in the order summer>fall>spring>winter. Formaldehyde emissions increased in summer when air temperature and relative humidity are both high. Formaldehyde concentration distribution according to the temperature and relative humidity showed positive correlation. Air temperature showed good correlation because $R^2$ was in the range of 0.8~0.9. Analysis of formaldehyde emission characteristics in the exhibition hall would be helpful in efforts to improve indoor air quality.
For 65 national forest areas in 1993 to 2008, the ambient sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) concentrations were measured monthly using passive samplers and compared to the those of urban areas in order to investigate the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution. In the forest areas, annual average concentration of sulfur dioxide gradually decreased from the beginning year of monitoring to 1997 and then had no significant change, such as the annual trend in urban areas monitored by Ministry of Environment. For the monitoring term, average concentration of sulfur dioxide in the forest areas was 5.6ppb, which was lower than the 10.1ppb in the urban areas and the EC ecological standard level (7.6 ppb). Seasonally, both in forest areas and urban areas the monthly average concentrations were much higher in winter and spring due to much more heating fuel consumption, and lowest in summer. Regional comparison to other regions of Gyeongbuk and Gyeonggi province showed that the concentration of sulfur dioxide was the highest during year. A significant positive correlation between sulfur oxides' emissions and sulfur dioxide concentration by province was observed, reflecting that the size and proximity of sources of atmospheric sulfur oxides could be important factors in determination.
