  • This paper estimates the union effect on the wages using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study by using fixed-effect estimation. While the cross-sectional estimates show the size of 4.6% increase in the wages of workers in the union compared 10 the observationally identical workers in the non-union jobs, the union wage effect is estimated as 2.1% increase in the panel study. This shows that there exits an substantial upward-bias in the cross-sectional estimation of union wage effect.

  • This paper attempts to estimate the diesel fuel demand function in Korea using panel data panel data of 16 major cities or provinces which consist of diesel demands, diesel market prices and gross value added from the year 1998 to 2015. I apply panel GLS(generalized least square) model, fixed effect model, random effect model and dynamic panel model to estimating the parameters of the diesel fuel demand function. The results show that short-run price elasticities of the diesel fuel demand are estimated to be -0.2146(panel GLS), -0.2886(fixed effect), -0.2854(random effect), -0.1905(dynamic panel) respectively. And short-run income elasticities of the diesel fuel demand are estimated to be 0.7379(panel GLS), 0.4119(fixed effect), 0.7260(random effect), 0.4166(dynamic panel) respectively. The short-run price and income elasticities explain that demand for diesel fuel is price- and income-inelastic. The long-run price and income elasticities are estimated to be -0.4784, 1.0461 by dynamic panel model, which means that demand for diesel fuel is price-inelastic but income-elastic in the long run. In addition I apply dummy variable model to estimate the effect of 16 major cities or provinces on diesel demands. The results show that diesel demands is affected 10 regions on the basis of Seoul.

  • This paper adopts recently developed panel unit root test that is cross-sectionally robust. Cointegration test is also used to find whether regional house prices are in line with gross regional domestic production (GRDP) in the long run in Korea during 1989-2009. Based on the panel VECM and the panel ARDL models, we examine causal relationships among the variables and estimate the long-run elasticity. We find evidence of cointegration and bidirectional causal relationships between regional house prices and GRDP. The results of long-run estimates, using both fixed effect and ARDL models, show that house prices positively and significantly influence on the GRDP and vice versa. Together with these results, the findings of ARDL-ECM imply that there exists a long-run equilibrium relationship between house prices and regional economic variables even if there is a possibility of short-run deviation from its long-run path.

  • School absenteeism is considered one of the early predictors of school drop-out and serious delinquency or criminal behavior. The primary goal of the current study was to explore the protective and risk factors related to changing school absenteeism over time based on the ecological-systemic perspective. The data was derived from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) using the 2011 and 2012 survey waves collected from 2,378 elementary school students. Using this data, Panel Fixed Effects Analysis was conducted. Major findings indicated that daily computer usage, parental abuse, school activity attendance, and school grades had an effect on students missing school days over time. Specifically, high levels of computer usage and parental abuse were related to increased school absenteeism, while high levels of school activity attendance and school grades were associated with decreased school absenteeism. These findings emphasized the importance of predictive intervention for children and suggested the need to construct a school absenteeism monitoring system in South Korea.

  • This research aims to empirically investigate the innovative effects of 2012 Cosmetics Act amendment on the cosmetics industry. By utilizing production data from the Korea Food and Drug Administration for the period 2008-2014 and estimating a panel fixed-effects model, the study demonstrates a significant positive correlation between the legislative revision and firm production. Additionally, it is observed that both the number of brands and new products per manufacturer significantly increased following the amendment. Further, this study shows a significant positive correlation between the amendment and the potential market size, with the potential market size positively correlated with innovation. The findings of this study highlight that government regulatory improvements can positively impact industrial innovation and promotion.

  • Using a establishment-worker matched data, this paper estimates wage differentials between standard and non-standard workers. Unlike previous studies, we estimate a fixed-effect model for the tree-way error-components that control for both unobserved individual heterogeneities and unobserved firm heterogeneities. The estimation results show that standard workers earn 6.5~8.4% mire than non-standard workers. This wage premium is 30~40% of the wage differential estimated from the OLS model. The results implies that a large proportion of the wage differentials between standard and non standard workers can be explained by unobserved firm and individual characteristics.

  • This study proposes the accident estimation model developed based on the time-series cross-sectional data at 50 intersections in Cheongju. The data were collected repeatedly and accumulated from 2004 to 2007. This study focused on deriving the optimal among the various models including TSCSREG(Time Series Cross Section Regression). Four different models utilizing various elements affecting accidents were developed. Through a statistical test, it was found that the t values of independent variables of the fixed effect models were less than those of the random effect models. Two variables were then found to be positive to the accidents: the number of crosswalks at an intersection and the number of intersections.

  • This study mainly investigates the port SOC's impact on trade volume. In order to investigate the relationships between port SOC and trade volume, we did the empirical analysis using panel data regression and fixed effects model. The total period of 97 years and 1,082 ports' information were applied to panel data and regression model. According to the results, the coefficients of development of container berth, development of bulk berth, maintenance of port, the jetty facilities like breakwater have positive(+) impact on the dependent variable, the trade volume. Especially, the jetty facilities show a strongly positive impact on trade volume. On the other hand, the development of new port and navigation facilities like lighthouse have a negative(-) impact. In examining Hausman test and LR test, the fixed effect model is statistically more appropriate than the random effect model for this study.

  • This paper estimates the public and private sector wage gap trend from 2000 to 2014 using 'Korean Labor and Income Panel Study.' We account for unobserved fixed effect by using 1st differencing log wage in order to allow the gap to vary over time. Standard OLS estimates present the public sector wage is 10% higher than private sector on average. Moreover, the public sector wage premium displays the inverted V shape: sharply increasing up to 2006 and decreasing from 2007 to 2014. However, after controlling unobserved fixed effect, the public sector wage premium disappears and does not display the inverted V shape any more.
