  • Aerodynamic analysis study was performed on 14 normal subjects(2 male, 12 female) by nonsense syllables composed of Korean bilabial stop(/p, p', $p^{h}$) and their preceding and/or following vowel /i, a, u/. That is [pi, p'i, phi, pa, p'a, pha, pu, p'u, $p^{h}u$]. All measures were analysed using Aerophone II voice function analyzer and included peak air pressure, mean air pressure, maximum flow rate, volume, mean SPL. As results, first, MSPL and MAP of /p, p', $p^{h}$/ themselves were significantly different. In addition, different vowel enviroment also produced significantliy different aerodynamic chracteristics those consonants.

  • This study examined the perception and production of Korean lax, fortis and aspirated stops in three apraxic patients. All of tile subjects made more production errors than perception errors. This indicates that apraxic patients have problems in phonetic execution rather than phonological representation. Additionally, in both production and perception, there were more errors in non-word-initial consonants than in word-initial consonants. These findings contradict those of the previous studies which report more errors in word-initial consonants. This study also found that, unlike previous studies in the types of errors made, distortion errors were high in both non-word-initial and word-initial consonants in apraxic patients. Generally, VOT of the stops showed significant differences among lax, fortis, and aspirated stops, which indicates that there is a failure not in choosing the appropriate stop but in positioning or motor planning at the articulation stage.

  • Aberrations in VOT measures in apraxia of speech are indicative of speech motor programming impairment. In English, overlaps of VOT between voiceless and voiced plosives have been frequently observed in patients with apraxia of speech. Unlike English, Korean plosives constitute trichotomy in terms of manner of production, that is, voiceless aspirated /p', t', k'/ ; voiceless or voiced, weakly aspirated /p-b, t-k, k-g/ ; or voiceless, heavily aspirated /p, t, k/. In this spectrographic study, VOT measures during Korean plosives produced by a patient with apraxia of speech were compared to those by age- and gender- matching normal subjects. The results indicated that there were partial overlaps between VOT of /b, d, g/ and those of /p, t, k/, implying that the errors were phonetic in nature. In addition, larger VOT variabilities in apraxia of speech compared to the normals were noted.

  • This study explores the most important temporal cues in the perception of the voiced/voiceless distinction of English plosives in terms of newly defined measures of perception: original signal to response agreement, unit signal to response agreement, and robustness. Seven native speakers of English and three leveled groups of Korean English learners participated in the present study. The results showed that both native speakers of English and Korean groups failed to successfully perceive the voiced/voiceless distinction of English plosives, particularly alveolar plosives, in word-medial trochaic positions. The results also showed that in word-initial and word-medial iambic positions both native speakers of English and Korean groups employ the information in the release burst and aspiration in the perception of the voiced/voiceless distinction, of English plosives, and that in word-final positions native speakers of English employ the information in the preceding vowel, while Korean groups employ the information in the closure interval.

  • In the literature on the tense consonants in Korean, it has been proposed that this consonant is underlyingly represented by a single consonant (the singleton hypothesis) and that it is represented by a sequence of two lenis consonants (the geminate hypothesis). One piece of the empirical evidence supporting the geminate hypothesis is that the closure duration of tense consonants in intervocalic position is more than twice as long in comparison with their lenis counterparts. In this paper, we report on the closure duration of three types of plosives in various phonotactically permitted contexts in Korean. The results of the measurement show that the duration of the tense consonants in post-sonorant contexts is reduced by a third in comparison with that of the intervocalic ones. These temporal differences suggest that the measurement of closure durations in intervocalic position alone is not sufficient to sustain the geminate hypothesis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show that the current notation of Japanese proper names in Korean has some problems. It cannot represent the different sounds between the voiced and voiceless. The purpose of this paper is also to give a more correct notation which is coherent and efficient. After introducing some general knowledge about the phonemes of Japanese language, I measured the Voice Onset Time of the stops[k, t] at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of a word, and compared the spectrogram of affricates with that of fricatives. In conclusion, Japanese voiceless [k, t ,$t{\int}$] should be written as [ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅊ] and voiced [g, d $d_3$] as [ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅈ] and the affricate[ts] as[ㅊ] in Korean.

  • Korean unvoiced phonemes consist of nonstationary parts comparing that the vowels and nasal consonants consist of quasi-stationary part. And some phonemes, which have smae point of articulation but differnt manner of articulation, has similar characteristics, so it makes to be hard to distinguish each other. A new method usin gchanges and characteristics of acoustic properties of these phonemes to improve recognition rate are proposed. And because these changes and cahracteristics evidently occur in continuous speech except some unvoiced consonants are articulated as voiced phoneme in case to be used as an midial between voiced phonemes, this method can be applied easily. The features of the frames extracted to represent each phonemes are used asinputs to the hierarchical neural network. And with these results final decision for phoneme recognition is made thorugh post processing which the new method is applied to. Through the experimental recognition results for 9 unvoiced consonants which belong to bilabial, alveolar, and velar phoneme series, 89.4% recognition rate to distinguish in same phoneme series is obtained, and 85.6% recognition rate is obtained in case of including cistinguishing phoneme series.

  • The purpose of this work is to examine the voice onset times(VOTs) of the voiceless and voiced stops from the ten young male speakers of the Buckeye corpus[9]. The factors that are known to affect VOTs were also extracted, including the place of articulation, height of following vowels, location within word, presence of a preceding [s], status of the target word with respect to the content versus function word, presence of a syllabic stress, word frequency and speech rate. Findings from this work mostly agreed with those from earlier studies on English, but with some exceptions and new discoveries. We hope that this work can contribute to figuring out the nature and properties of the spontaneous speech of English.

  • This paper investigates phonation types of Malay plosives and compares Malay plosives with Korean ones in terms of VOT, F0, duration of closure, and durations of the preceding and following vowels. This study is significant in that it specifies phonetic characteristics of phonation types of the two languages and provides phonetic bases for teaching and learning either of the two languages. The results showed that Malay voiceless plosives are greater than voiced ones in VOT, F0, duration of closure, but the other way in durations of the preceding and following vowels. Comparison of the two languages, particularly in terms of the distribution of VOT, indicates that Malay voiceless plosives are close to Korean fortis plosives.
