Condition Monitoring of Micro Endmill using C-means Algorithm (C-means 알고리즘을 이용한 마이크로 엔드밀의 상태 감시)

  • Recently, the advanced industries using micro parts are rapidly growing. Micro endmilling is one of the prominent technology that has wide spectrum of application field ranging from macro to micro parts. Also, the method of micro-grooving using micro endmilling is used widely owing to many merit, but has problems of precision and quality of products due to tool wear and tool fracture. This study deals with condition monitoring using acoustic emission(AE) signal in the micro-grooving. First, the feature extraction of AE signal directly related to machining process is executed. Then, the distinctive micro endmill state according to the each tool condition is classified by using the fuzzy C-means algorithm, which is one of the methods to recognize data patterns. These result is effective monitoring method of micro endmill state by the AE sensing techniques which can be expected to be applicable to micro machining processes in the future.

Monitoring of Tool Wear Condition by Cutting Resistance and AE Signal in Drilling ADI Material. (ADI재의 드릴가공시 절삭저항 및 AE신호에 의한 공구마멸상해의 검출)

  • For the purpose of monitoring the abnormal state in proportion to cutting in automatic production process, the 3 kinds of specimens different from mechanical properties by austempering through temperature variation were manufactured, and the effects of tool wear on thrust and AE RMS was analyzed with sequential drilling in in-process. When the ADI specimens were drilled, the relationship of thrust and AE RMS with flank wear was studied through experiments, and it is confirmed that the reliable wear state is able to be monitored by using these signals. It was shown that thrust and AE RMS increased slowly till flank wear reached to V$_{B}$ = 0.25mm, and they increased steeply over the value. The effective tool exchange time was able to be pre-estimated by using this fact. It was validated that the tool breakage was able to be detected on the real time by monitoring in in-process.s.

  • 출석체크를 자동으로 하는 시스템으로 QR 코드나 NFC 등의 전자 태그기반 방식들이 있으나 태깅을 수동으로 해야 하는 불편함과 함께 태그의 물리적 파손 문제 등의 단점이 그 확산에 제한 사항으로 작용하고 있다. 본 논문에서는, 태그 기반 대신 Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) 비콘 신호를 학생들의 스마트폰으로 수신하여 위치와 시간을 확인함으로 출석을 자동으로 체크하는 경제적이고 안정적인 출결 시스템을 제안한다. 나아가, 시스템 초기 및 유지 비용을 구성하는 요인들을 분석하고, 시스템의 안정적 운영을 보장하는 제한조건 하에서 BLE 비콘의 설치 및 운영의 경제성을 높이기 위한 추가적 변인들을 열거하고 변인들 간의 trade-off를 고려하여 시스템을 설계해야 함을 보였다.

Interfacial Evaluation and Microfailure Sensing of Nanocomposites by Electrical Resistance Measurements and Wettability (전기저항측정법 및 젖음성을 이용한 나노복합재료의 미세파손 감지능 및 계면물성 평가)

  • Damage sensing of polymer composite films consisting of poly(dicyclopentadiene) p-DCPD and carbon nanotube (CNT) was studied experimentally. Only up to 1st ring-opening polymerization occurred with the addition of CNT, which made the modified film electrically conductive, while interfering with polymerization. The interfacial adhesion of composite films with varying CNT concentration was evaluated by measuring the wettability using the static contact angle method. 0.5 wt% CNT/p-DCPD was determined to be the optimal condition via electrical dispersion method and tensile test. Dynamic fatigue test was conducted to evaluate the durability of the films by measuring the change in electrical resistance. For the initial three cycles, the change in electrical resistance pattern was similar to the tensile stress-strain curve. The CNT/p-DCPD film was attached to an epoxy matrix to demonstrate its utilization as a sensor for fracture behavior. At the onset of epoxy fracture, electrical resistance showed a drastic increase, which indicated adhesive fracture between sensor and matrix. It leads to prediction of crack and fracture of matrix.

Optimum Monitoring Parameters for the Safety of Mechanical Seals (미캐니컬 씰의 안전운용 감시를 위한 최적 계측인자)

  • The mechanical seals, which are installed in rotating machines like pump and compressor, are generally used as sealing devices in the many fields of industries. The failure of mechanical seals such as leakage, crack, breakage, fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking results in big problems. To identify abnormal phenomena on mechanical seals and to propose the proper monitoring parameter for the failure of mechanical seals, sliding wear experiments were conducted. Acoustic emission, torque, and temperature were measured during experiments. Optical microstructure was observed for the wear processing after every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 rpm and scanning electron microscopy was also observed. Except for the initial part of every experiment, the variation of acoustic emission was well coincided with torque variation during the experiments. This study concludes that acoustic emission and torque are proper monitoring parameters for the failure of mechanical seals. The intensity of acoustic emission signals is measured in root mean square voltage. Temperature of sealing face will be used as a parallel parameter for increasing the reliability of monitoring system.

Estimation of Significant Wave Heights from X-Band Radar Using Artificial Neural Network (인공신경망을 이용한 X-Band 레이다 유의파고 추정)

  • Wave measurements using X-band radar have many advantages compared to other wave gauges including wave-rider buoy, P-u-v gauge and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), etc.. For example, radar system has no risk of loss/damage in bad weather conditions, low maintenance cost, and provides spatial distribution of waves from deep to shallow water. This paper presents new methods for estimating significant wave heights of X-band marine radar images using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We compared the time series of estimated significant wave heights (Hs) using various estimation methods, such as signal-to-noise ratio (${\sqrt{SNR}}$), both and ${\sqrt{SNR}}$ the peak period (TP), and ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k). The estimated significant wave heights of the X-band images were compared with wave measurement using ADCP(AWC: Acoustic Wave and Current Profiler) at Hujeong Beach, Uljin, Korea. Estimation of Hs using ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k) yields best result.

  • Journal bearings in the rotating machineries are vulnerable to the contamination or the insufficient supply of lubricating oil, which is likely to be the cause of unexpected shutdown or malfunction of these systems. Various destructive and nondestructive testing methods had been used for the reduction of maintenance cost and the operational safety problems due to the accidents related to bearing damages. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is employed to the detection of incipient failure caused by intervention of foreign particles most probable in the journal bearing systems. Experimental schedules for the intervention of foreign particles was composed to be more quantitative and systematic than last study in consideration of minimum oil film thickness and particle size. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as inserting alumina particles to the lubrication layer in the simulated journal bearing system. Several parameters such as AE rms level, waveform, AE energy distribution and other AE event parameters are used for analysis and characterization of damage source. The results showed that the history of damage was well correlated with the changes of AE rms level and the type of damage source signal can be verified using other informations such as waveform, distributions of AE parameters etc.

  • Airport GIS is a comprehensive information system to improve security and efficiency of airport. At the initial stage to make it real, the current status of domestic and international regulations along with relevant standardization bas been reviewed. Gimpo Airport becomes a test-bed to get some ideas about how to bring the airport GIS into workflow by building service model and basic design based on current status and demand analysis of the airport. The 6 service models primarily brought into the project are as follows: (1) Local vehicles safety management in airside, (2) Intelligent traffic control between flights and vehicles at main cross points, (3) Dynamic safety management against FOD in airside and breakage on pavement, (4) Special support vehicle management such as deicing remotely controlled, (5) Response and support for fire vehicles and ambulances of signatory institutions in emergency. The upcoming research topic aims at drawing a specific design and building integrated system in the future.

  • The performance of fault diagnostics for a planetary gearbox depends on vibration modulation characteristics, which can vary with manufacturing & assembly tolerance, and load condition. In this paper, a fault diagnostics technique that considers vibration modulation characteristics is proposed for the effective fault detection of planetary gearboxes in wind turbines. For identifying the vibration modulation characteristics in practice, re-sampled vibration signals are processed with narrow band-pass filters. Thereafter, the optimal position of the vibration extraction window is identified for effective detection of faulty signals under the varying vibration modulation characteristics. The proposed diagnostics technique makes it possible to perform robust diagnostics of the planetary gearbox with regard to the changeable vibration modulation effect. For demonstrating the proposed fault diagnostics technique, a 2-kW WT testbed is designed with two DC motors and gearboxes. A faulty gear with partial tooth breakage is machined and assembled into the gearbox.

  • Prediction of failure behavior in filament-wound composite motor cases is one of the important issues for their reliable application. Acoustic emission during hydroproof testing of the cases is used to solve this problem. Based on the acoustic emission behavior, failure sites can be located successfully. The identification of failure modes is also possible using the distribution of acoustic emission amplitude. Due to the limitation in the number of samples, it is not possible to predict the final burst pressure of motor cases and the effect of impact damage on the final burst pressure.
