  • In this study, the combustion characteristics of paraffin blended fuel on aluminum particle size were investigated. The combustion experiments were carried out using aluminum particles with an average particle size of 100 nm and $8{\mu}m$ and microcrystalline paraffin wax (Sasol 0907). A series of comparison was conducted on the regression rate, the pressure curve and the characteristic velocity of pure paraffin and paraffin blended fuels with aluminum particles. It was found that the micro-sized particles enhance the regression rate as the oxidizer mass flux increased. However, the nano-sized particles decrease the regression rate as the oxidizer mass flux is increased.

  • In this study, the manufacturing process of micro capsulized PCM (phase changing material) for thermal storage performance of latent heat was investigated to save energy during the use of buildings: i.e. use of melamine-type resin as the micro-capsule material and paraffin wax as the inner material that are together used in concrete walls. For the manufacturing process of the micro-capsulized PCM, the amount of SDS addition as surfactant was the key variable and the resulting thermal storage performance depended on the SDS amount. With increasing amount of SDS, the micro capsulation became much easier while the capsule surface became harder. The micro capsules became uniform at an optimum SDS addition. The addition of SDS also affected the thermal capacity: with increasing SDS amount, the heat storage and release tendency at melting point was more clearly manifested. The current investigation is part of a study under progress to explore the use of PCM in concrete walls to save building maintenance cost and energy.

  • Waxes, or long-chain hydrocarbons, may be obtained naturally from animals, vegetables, and mineral waxes, or may be synthesized. The oil-wax gels are widely applied to lots of cosmetics such as lipsticks. For example, the lipstick texture is strongly dependent on the glossiness of the oil-wax gels. Extensive research has been carried out to investigate the lattice structure of wax mixture in pure solvents (hydrocarbons) and defined mixtures. However, only a limited amount of work has been published on the lattice structure of wax matrixes in undefined mixtures. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the lattice structure of ceresin wax and different wax mixtures and the glossiness of oil-wax gels. Recently visual factors such as the glossiness of skin are generally known as the words to express the beauty. The mechanism of glossiness has been suggested to understand the changes that occur in the lattice structure of the wax matrixes when they are forming gels and also the effects of the nature of solvent. The present work investigates the lattice structure of the wax matrixes and glossiness of oil-wax gels obtained from ceresin and microcrystalline wax as well as of the gels formed by different waxes in solvent.

  • Out of 60 quarantine insect pests in Korea, 42 species are classified into tephritid fruit flies. Most of these fruit flies are attracted to two natural products, methyl eugenol (ME) or raspberry ketone. Paraffin wax has been devised to formulate these lures. The formulated lures were applied to field test in Taiwan to attract quarantine fruit flies. Wax-ME formulation was installed in Delta trap and could attract 60-80 males of B. dorsalis per day during late August, while a wax formulation of Cue-lure (a methylated compound of raspberry ketone) attracted both B. cucurbitae and B. tau. These wax formulations can be applied to monitor these three quarantine species in Korea.

  • High molecular weight paraffinic waxes dissolved in oil phases can be precipitated when the surrounding temperature becomes lower than the wax appearance temperature (WAT). While the various methods of WAT determination have been developed, the determination of precipitated wax amount has not been comparably popular at temperatures below the WAT. It is important to predict how much solid wax content precipitates in temperature variance. The study develops the previous method which uses integrated areas determined at a wavenumber range of 735~715 $cm^{-1}$. This method uses two different wavenumber ranges, 735~715 $cm^{-1}$ and 1,402~1,324 $cm^{-1}$. The study shows how the method provides reliable data in the variety of applications regardless of FTIR spectral instability often occurred, such as volume reduction during cooling procedure and existence of emulsified water in oil phase.

  • The stability of various waste forms to meet waste acceptance criteria was evaluated by using standard test methods of U.S.A and France. Compressive strength of waste forms were above 176.03 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$(cement), 15 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$(paraffin). In the thermal cycling test, there were no any change in their feature and volume, the loss of weight was 6.15% on the average. In the immersion test for 120 days, the loss of weight of paraffin waste form was 8.85-5.14% pH=3.83. The G-Value of $H_2$ and $CH_4$ in paraffin wax at $10^8rads$ rads of exposure dose were 2.65, 0.016.

  • The performance of a latent heat storage system using a thermosyphon as the heat transfer device between the heat source and the phase change material was investigated experimentally. In order to increase the effective conductivity of the phase change material, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the paraffin wax(Sunoco P-116) in such a way that they also may be considered as fins of the thermosyphon. The important results are as follows : (1) The void space of the wire mesh allowed the convection to occur, thus enhanced the performance of the system : (2) The increase of the number of layer of wire mesh increased the conduction heat transfer. However, it also had adverse effect of subduing convective motion of liquid wax : and (3) Overall heat transfer coefficient and thermosyphon conductance increased with the increase of the number of layer of wire mesh, whereas the heat transfer coefficient between the thermosyphon and the wax decreased.

  • An estimate is made on the potential generation rate of H: from radiolysis of the Paraffin-wax encapsulant Proposed for the solidified liquid concentrate wasteform. The results show that the radiolytic Production of $H_2$ from paraffin-wax-encapsulated waste is dominated by the radiation energy released from $^{60}Co$. The radiolytic production of $H_2$ will proceed at an initial rate equivalent to aproximately $4.4{\times}10^2cm^3yr^1$ in 200 litre drums that are partly filled with 120 litres of encapsulated waste. The gas production rate will fall to a value of $7.2cm^3yr^1$ after 100 years. The lower flammable limit for $H_2$ in air will be reached in about 25 years and the lower explosive limit for $H_2$ in air would not be reached in 1000years. The timescale in which these safety-related limits are reached is strongly dependent on the level of filling of each waste drum. A reduction of the air space inside each drum would reduce the time required to reach the lower flammable limit.

  • The effect of packaging materials on the quality and physiological activity of Angelica acutiloba leaves during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 20 days and after being transferred to room temperature for 2 days was studied. The experiment was conducted using three packaging materials: the corrugated box (control); corrugated box with $20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner; and corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner. Changes in weight, color, aroma, overall visual quality, antioxidant activity, and total flavonoids were investigated. Based on the result, the treatments using corrugated box with $20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner and the corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner, were effective in minimizing weight loss, and maintaining external color and overall quality as compared to corrugated box only (control). The corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner was more effective in maintaining antioxidant activity and total flavonoids than other treatments. Prolonging the freshness using corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner could increase the marketability of Angelica acutiloba leaves in the domestic market.

  • This study shows that ceresin wax, candellila wax and microcrystalline wax mixed together with liquid paraffin oil to produce lipsticks (LS-1, LS-2) and capric/caprylic triglyceride oil added to produce lipsticks (LS-3, LS-4). After each type of lipsticks were molded, LS-1 and LS-3 was put into a cooling chamber ($5^{\circ}C$). LS-2 and LS-4 was put into a cooling chamber ($5^{\circ}C$) for 18 hours and kept in an incubator ($45^{\circ}C$) for 5 hours and put again into a cool chamber ($5^{\circ}C$). After that, the wax's three dimensional network structure was observed under scanning electron microscopy. Regardless of the kind of oil, the LS-1 and LS-3 wax structure had more distinct shape than the lipstick wax structure of LS-2 and LS-4. Also, regardless of the kind of wax, the three dimensional network structure was modified as the storage temperature increased. As a result, the lipstick's molding temperature increased, the wax's structure size also increased and the shape irregularly modified. This modification causes sweating phenomenon which affected lipstick's surface rheological property.
