  • Three dimensional numerical analysis of the supersonic turbines with different rotor tip clearances was conducted to analyze the effect of the tip gap clearance variations on the turbine performance. The result showed that the turbine performance deteriorates and the tip leakage increases by the effect of the rotor tip clearance and the tip leakage affects turbine performance degradation dominantly.

  • The heat transfer and flow characteristics of gas turbine blade tip were investigated in this paper by using the conjugate heat transfer analysis. The rotor inlet boundary condition profile which was taken from the first stage nozzle outlet was used to analyse. The profile contained the velocity and temperature information. This study presents the influence of tip clearance about aerodynamic loss, heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness with the squealer tip designed blade model which tip clearance variation range from 1% to 2.5% of span. Results showed that the aerodynamic loss and the heat transfer coefficient were increased when the tip clearance was increased. Especially when the tip clearance was 2% of the span, the average heat transfer coefficient on the tip region was increased obviously. The film cooling effectiveness of tip region was increasing with decreasing of the tip clearance. There was high film cooling effectiveness at cavity and near tip hole region.

  • Lots of studies about turbine loss have been done especially about tip leakage loss. But these studies deals with small tip clearances which is less than 5 percent chord. Now, like turbopumps, small turbines have larger tip clearance and it is hardly found related papers in open literature. On this study, with varying tip clearance 1% to 20% chord, loss is measured under inlet velocity at 30m/s and Reynolds number based on chord at 210000. It is found that maximum loss coefficient is 0.113 at 10% clearance, and when tip clearance is larger than 10%, loss is not linearly increased anymore.

  • Korea Aeronautics Research Institute (KARI) is developing a turbo pump that has 1-stage impulse turbine and relatively high tip clearance for safety. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of reaction on tip clearance loss in axial turbines. Both cascades were tested in a subsonic wind tunnel. In each cascade, total pressure was measured for tip clearance ranging from 1% to 20% of chord. In results, increasing tip clearance, total pressure loss in reaction turbines is continually increased but impulse turbines keep almost same level of mass averaged total pressure loss. When tip clearance becomes more than 10% of chord, mass-averaged total pressure loss in impulse turbines is less than in reaction. This means that when tip clearance is more than 10% of chord, impulse turbines have better efficiency than reaction turbines.

  • The tip clearance effect on counter-rotating ducted fan of VTOL UAV in hovering condition, was investigate using computational analysis. The $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model is employed in this study. The numerical results of baseline model are validated by wind tunnel test in hovering and forward conditions. It is observed that if tip clearance of one rotor in the counter-rotating ducted fan increase then the thrust coefficient of another rotor increases. In Addition to this, when the tip clearance of the rear rotor increases, the thrust of the ducted fan is improved due to increasing of average total pressure at exit plane.

  • Effect of rotor tip geometry on the performance of supersonic impulse turbine was investigated experimentally. Using the shrouded supersonic impulse turbine of the 30ton class liquid rocket engine turbopump as a base model, the measured performance of de-shrouded rotor was compared. The effect of nozzle-rotor overlap also has been investigated. It has been found that the magnitude of turbine efficiency is largely affected by the existence of the rotor shroud. However, measured efficiency sensitivity of the de-shrouded supersonic impulse turbine with respect to turbine tip clearance was relatively smaller than that of high performance reaction turbine. It also has been found that there exists nozzle-rotor overlap value which results optimum efficiency in supersonic impulse turbine.

  • The heat/mass transfer characteristics on the plane tip surface of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The heat/mass transfer coefficient is measured for four tip clearance height-to-chord ratios of h/c = 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, and 4% at the Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}105$. The result shows that at lower h/c, there exists a strong flow separation/re-attachment process, which results in severe thermal load along the pressure-side comer. As h/c increases, the re-attachment is occurred further downstream of the pressure-side comer with lower thermal load. At higher h/c, a pair of vortices on the tip surface near the leading edge are found along the pressure-side and suction-side comers, and the pressure-side tip vortex have significant influence even on the mid-chord local heat transfer.

  • We performed three-dimensional CFD analysis to investigate the effect of the nozzle-rotor axial gap of a partial admission supersonic turbine on the stage performance and the flow field. The computations are conducted for five axial gaps using flow analysis program, $FLUENT^{TM}$. The results show that the axial gap between nozzle and rotor give the effect on the mass flow rates of tip leakage and the flow angle at the rotor outlet.

  • The heat (mass) transfer characteristics in the tip-leakage flow region of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The heat transfer data in the tip-leakage flow area for the tip clearance-to-span ratio, h/s, of 2.0% are compared with those in endwall three-dimensional flow region without tip clearance (h/s = 0.0 %). The result shows that the thermal load in the tip-leakage flow region for h/s = 2.0% is more severe than that in the endwall flow region for h/s = 0.0%. The thermal loads even at the leading and trailing edges for h/s = 2.0% are found larger than those for h/s = 0.0%. The tip-leakage flow results in heat transfer augmentations near the tip on both pressure and suction sides in comparison with the mid-span results.

  • The effect of tip clearance on the performance of a supersonic impulse turbine was investigated experimentally. Test was performed using high pressure air in wide ranges of pressure ratio and rotational speeds. Test revealed that efficiency gradient of the subject turbine at a reference test point was a very low value of 0.05. Turbine efficiency was varied non-linearly with respect to tip clearance. It has been found that efficiency gradient is proportional to the cube of rotational speed at a fixed turbine pressure ratio. It also has been found that efficiency gradient shows its minimum at a reference test pressure ratio irrespective of rotational speeds.
