Performance Analysis on Foreign-invested Firms in the SEZ (경제특구 입주 외국인투자기업의 성과 분석)

  • To attract more FDI inflows, the Korean government has designated several special economic zones (SEZs), offering various advantages and support to the FDI. There is, however, a shared acknowledgement that those efforts have gained little reward. In this regard, this paper empirically analyzes company-level performances of labor productivity, operating profit ratio, propensity to invest and innovate, etc. and then conducts regression analysis and PSM analysis to see whether these performances are meaningfully different between foreign-invested firm and domestic firm and between foreign-invested firms. The main findings of this paper are as follows. First, in the aspects of labor productivity and operating profit ratio, no empirical evidence was found to support the hypothesis that foreign-invested firm outperforms domestic firm in efficiency and profitability, Second, in the aspects of propensity to invest, foreign-invested firms in foreign investment zones outperformed domestic firms. Third, in the aspect of R&D investment, overall, foreign-invested firms showed a stronger propensity to invest than domestic firms, but there is no empirical evidence that high propensity to invest was driven by the policy on special economic zones. In the aspect of investment in educational training, empirical evidences were found that the role of foreign-invested firms outside the special zones turned out to be the strongest and that among firms inside special zones, it was those in the free economic zone that outperformed domestic firms. Lastly, foreign-invested firms showed a stronger propensity to employ than domestic firms, but there is no empirical evidence that high propensity to employ was driven by the policy on special economic zones.

  • Today, communication trend of financial brand has changed fast with more foreign financial brand's introduction, emerging financial brands through the openness. With the trend of changing, companies are introducing various marketing methods to differentiate its brand image. And color marketing becomes an important tool for the differentiation. However, except a few brands, brand color which expresses management character of a company is different from the customer's preferred color which is based on investors' investment tendency. This may be related to the brand Image which is final goal of communication. Therefore, this study suggests effective communication method between company and customers by analyzing preferred color of customers by their investment tendency and comparison analysis security firms' color marketing strategy. As a result, it was found that Roland Barthes symbolic meaning of colors is different from the symbolic meaning of the groups of investor tendency. For example, I assumed that aggressive investors preferred strong color like red or orange, but the survey result was far from my assumption. I hope this study can be a good foundation for logical and scientific marketing in communication between security companies and customers in more open market with introduction to the Capital Market Consolidation Act.

  • 최근의 코스닥 시장의 붐과 함께 개인투자가들의 벤처기업에 대한 투자가 본격적으로 이루어지고 있다. 특히 주요 엔젤클럽의 투자설명회를 통해 초기 단계의 벤처기업에게 많은 자금이 투자되고 있는데, 본 고에서 ’97년부터 ’99년 9월까지 투자설명회를 통해 엔젤들로부터 자금을 유입한 49개 벤처기업을 대상(벤처캐피탈 자본을 제외한 순수 엔젤자금)으로 벤처기업의 성향에 대해 분석해 보았다.

Foreign Equity Ownership and Investors' Heterogeneous Beliefs (외국인지분율과 투자자들 간의 상이한 믿음)

  • This study investigates whether foreign equity ownership is associated with trading volume. This study establishes null hypothesis indicating that foreign equity ownership is not related to trading volume based on prior studies regarding foreign equity ownership. We measured trading volume as proxy of investors' heterogeneous beliefs. To exam The the hypothesis, we collected sample firms listed on the Korean Stock Exchange from the year of 2001 to the year of 2011 inclusively. Controlling for variables related with trading volume as reported in the previous studies, the regression coefficient for the foreign equity ownership showed statistically significant negative sign. These results indicate that the foreign equity ownership is negatively associated with investors' heterogeneous beliefs. This study contributes to extant literature on foreign equity ownership by providing evidence that foreign equity ownership affects investors' trading decisions. The results also help policy makers in their policy development.

  • 개개인들의 유전적인 성향에 따라 금융투자 포트폴리오 양상은 다르게 나타나고 있다. 하지만 금융투자와 관련된 그동안의 연구결과에서는 이러한 연구가 거의 없는 상황이다. 기존 연구 중에서 개개인들의 유전적인 특성(trait)이 금융투자에 어떠한 영향을 주는가와 관련하여 스웨덴의 경우 유전적인 특성에 따라 투자패턴이 25% 정도 상이하였음을 나타내어 주고 있다.

  • 일반적으로 투자자들은 높은 수익을 얻기를 바라는 성향 그리고 위험기피적 성향을 가지고 있는 것으로 받아들여진다. 그러나 투자자들이 갖는 이러한 대표적인 두가지 성향은 현실에서 직면하는 투자대안의 경우에 서로 상층(trade-off)하는 것이 일반적이며, 따라서 그러한 상충관계를 서로 다른 수준으로 포함하고 있는 대안들 중에서 어떤 것을 선택하는 때에 투자자의 선호체계가 중요하게 작용한다. 그런데 많은 경우 투자자들은 그러한 상충관계에 직면했을 때, 커다란 손실의 가능성을 포함하는 대안이 아니라면 약간 낮은 평균수익이 에상되더라도 높은 수익의 가능성이 상대적으로 높은 대안을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 약간 낮은 평균수익이 예상되더라도 높은 수익의 가능성이 상대적으로 높은 대안 즉, 대안 수익의 분포가 우향왜곡된(skewed positively)대안을 선호하는 투자자의 성향을 포함시킬 수 있는 방법을 모색하였다.

Corporate Venture Capital and Technological Innovation: Effects of Investment Portfolio Composition (사내벤처캐피탈의 투자포트폴리오 운영성향과 기술혁신 효과)

  • The purpose of this research is to examine whether investment portfolio composition affects the technological performance of corporate venture capital (CVC). The stages of investment are categorized from "start-up/seed", "early", and "expansion", to "later" stage. We posit and test that the investment stage composition in a portfolio is highly correlated with the growth potential and downside risk of the portfolio, which in turn influences an investor's innovation performance. To test this hypothesis, we used negative binomial panel regression with 21 years of deal data from 70 cases of CVC. The results show that there is an inverted U shaped relationship between investment portfolio composition and technological performance. This means that the more seed or early stage investment within the investment portfolio, the higher the innovation performance; however, if the amount of seed or early stage investment is over a certain level, the performance decreases. Further, this study finds that the external partners of a venture negatively moderate the inverted U shaped relationship between portfolio composition and innovation performance. We believe that corporate planners, venture capitalists, and policy makers will be helped by these results showing that companies can maximize their investment performance by considering the investment stage and progress of investments.

  • 다국적기업(多國籍企業)은 100% 직접투자(直接投資), 합작투자(合作投資) 및 기술(技術)"라이센싱" 등 여러 가지 경로를 통하여 해외시장(海外市場)에 진출하고 있다. 본고(本稿)에서는 시장진출형태(市場進出形態)의 선택은 다국적기업과 유치국의 파트너간 협상과정에서 양측이 갖고 있는 위험회피성향(危險回避性向) 및 정보(情報)의 구조(構造)에 따라 결정된다는 것을 보인다. 그리고 이같이 진출형태가 결정되는 상황에서는 투자유치국(投資誘致國)에 의한 직접투자의 제한은 생산량에 비례한 로열티를 지급하는 기술(技術)"라이센싱"을 유도하게 되며 이는 투자유치국(投資誘致國)의 정태적(靜態的) 효율성(效率性)을 저하시키는 결과를 초래한다.

  • This study is aimed at analyzing the factors that affect the behaviors of employee's investment, such as a decision making process in a variety of views and proving the extent of how those factors influence on their investment. The basic assumption is that the preceding factors that can be determined by the personal investment propensity, a psychological factor asserted by Behavior Financial Theory and financial-economic and social environment. This study uses Hershey's Investment Behavior Model(2007) as the main analysis tool to explain the investment behavior of individuals and deals with personal investment inclination in the psychological perspective of overconfidence, self-control and the risk tolerance propensity and add the financial and economic factors in terms of financial literacy and economic distress. Also the new preceding social environmental factors like social interaction and the effect of reference group are added to make this research to be more precise. This study analyze the adjustment effect of professional invest-consulting service that affect the fluctuation influence between the individual variables(those factors) and subordination variable(the level of investment satisfaction). The study reveals that overconfidence and self-control in direct ways have a positive effect on the level of investment satisfaction in terms of investment behavior and economic distress has a negative effect on the level of investment satisfaction. The adjustment effect provided by financial experts in investment consulting service is affirmed as the critical factor that increase the influence between self-control and the level of investment satisfaction. To conclude, the research reveals that the psychological factors are the main criteria when the workers as employees have to make investment decisions. To make investors be reasonable, a systematic financial education system provided by experts is needed from the early adolescent stages and financial companies should develop the relevant services of consulting service department as a key financial sector and financial investment products and consulting program and marketing tool pertinent to investors ages, vocational traits and their inclinations.
