  • This study analyzed the impact of the investment of venture capital firms(VCFs) on the technological advancement of SMEs, which could be represented as the numerical increasement of patents. The results of this study are as follows: the higher proportion of VCFs' shares or the higher intensity of R&D, the more positive impact has been shown in the technological advancement of SMEs. Also, the joint investment of VCFs or the leading investors' stock acquirement had a positive impact on the technological improvement of them. Meanwhile, the meaningful relationships of company-size and the technical manpower with technological development were not identified although they were marginally positive. Those could be interpreted that the VCFs' supervision and control, including their managerial and technical advice, over invested companies display effectiveness for SMEs. It could also be interpreted that investors concentrate their investment on the relatively stable companies or the companies which other investors already finished screening.

  • All countries of the world have been spurring foreign direct investment consistently for securing of economic growth and growth engines, and Korea is no exception. Korea has been stimulating investment of high quality through various political support and the government has been publicizing it as an achievement. Based on the most of previous studies analyzed the results of foreign direct investment only on the view of domestic economy, this study supposes that foreign direct investment influences positively on management and innovation performance on companies, and evaluated effects of foreign direct investment by using Propensity score matching method. Analysis shows that foreign direct investment has positive influence on management and innovation performance before matching them. However, after matching them, the most statistical significance disappears. Consequently, foreign direct investment has limited effect on company's performance comparison on initial assumption. 'This study indicates that incentive policy of foreign direct investment would need to be amended, because effect of incentive policy was limited for firm's performance.

The result show that syndicated investment and independent venture capital have positive influence on the growth of sales revenue and asset of the invested companies. Age of venture capital appears to be positively associated with growth of sales revenue. Staged financing and preferred stock investment, however, have no impact on any financial growth and profitability. • This paper explores the relationship between firm-specific volatility and some firm characteristics such as size, the market-to-book ratio of equity, PER, PBR, PCR, PSR and turnover in KOSDAQ market. In addition, I investigate whether portfolios with difference to realized range-based volatility and firm-specific volatility have different investment performance using CAPM and FF-3 factor model. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, firm-specific volatility have mostly positive relationship between firm-specific volatility and some firm characteristics. Second, this study found that realized range-based volatility and firm-specific volatility are positively related to expected return. • The relationship between R&D investment and subsequent change has been mostly confirmed under additional influencing factors, with the form of innovation investments. The research assumes that a firm adjusts its R&D spending in accordance to performance feedback. It is argued that an increased fluctuation of a firm's R&D expense is related to a reduced performance. This hypothesis is tested on SME in World class 300 Projet by SMBA. Using panel data models, instability measured by SD is related to performance levels measured by ROA, ROE & PM. Results support the proposed relationship between R&D expense instability and the subsequent performance. Although a causal link cannot be clearly established, the results indicate that firms with a lower performance have higher R&D investment fluctuations, possibly being more responsive to performance feedback.

  • This research confirms a non-linear relationship between R&D investment and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises and measures the adequate level as threshold value. Although previous studies did not consider the time lag and estimated indirectly the level using the R&D investment squared term, this study assumes 2 years time lag and uses the threshold estimation model to measure directly. We find that there is the S-curve relationship between the profit rate as R&D output and R&D intensity and the ratio of researchers to employees as R&D input. Also, we estimate the adequate levels of R&D investment, 6.4% for R&D intensity and 13% for the ratio of researchers to employees. This relationship and measurement of the level can offer basic facts and implications about R&D policy and strategy.

  • This study aims to examine the impact of corporate governance systems on the relationship between R&D investment and the performance of Chinese firms. The sample firms were obtained from the statistical yearbook of Chinese high-tech firms. We implement a multiple-regression analysis for an empirical examination. The findings of showed that the separation of the board chair with CEO strengthen the R&D investment-performance relationship of Chinese firms. However, the outsider ratio of the board was found to negatively moderate that relationship. This study provides practical guidelines for Chinese firms undertaking R&D management and corporate governance systems. It also encourages future study on the effects of corporate governance as the means for R&D investment management.
