In this study, physico-chemical properties and heavy metal contents of sediment samples were determined to characterize the current pollution levels of the sediments. Ignition loss of the samples obtained from outside of the harbor was relatively lower than that from the samples obtained inside of the harbor. Heavy metal pollution was not serious except Ni. Concentrations of Ni for J1, J3, and J4 exceeded 16 mg/kg. Thus, these areas were classified as lowest effect level according to Ontario sediment quality guidelines. Evaluation of sediments pollution using $I_{geo}$ and R resulted as non-pollution for all considered metals, which indicated that no outer pollutants entered in the Jeju outport harbor. However, drastic increase of Cu concentrations was observed. Its concentration obviously increased toward the inside of the outport harbor. Therefore, careful attention and plan for the protection and remediation of sediments is required to maintain the cleanness of the Jeju outport harbor.

An investigation on the polluted sediments in the Lake Sihwa and the benthos that inhabited on the sediments was conducted. Cost effective remediation alternatives were derived form the results of the investigation. The sediment samples taken from four sampling points out of thirteen showed relatively high heavy metal (particularly copper) concentrations which exceeded the Effects Range Low (ERL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. The four sampling points were located in front of industrial complexes. Although the heavy metals appeared to have affected the growth of the benthos, the concentration of it did not exceed the criteria of dredging that were developed by Netherlands or the State of Washington, USA. However, contamination by organic matters and sulfur compounds was severe, which exceeded the criteria of dredging that were established in Japan. The sediments taken from the four sampling points which were contaminated with heavy metals showed higher organic matter content in general. The organic matters in the sediments depleted oxygen in summer, which appeared to be fatal to the benthos. A comprehensive analysis on the sediments, benthos, and other environmental impact from the contaminated sediments drew a conclusion that the benthonic environment of the Lake Sihwa needed a stepwise remediation, giving a particular emphasis on the clean up of the sediments upstram of the Lake which could cause odor problems to the nearby residential area.
The dredged sediment management system was developed to have an objective, quantitative and scientific decision for the optimum removal time of dredged sediments behind debris barrier and was set up at the real site. The dredged sediment management system is designed and developed to directly measure the dredged sediments behind debris barrier in the field. This management system is composed of Data Acquisition System (DAS), Solar System and measurement units for measuring the weight of dredge sediments. The weight of dredged sediments, the water level and the rainfall are measured in real time using the monitoring sensors, and their data can be transmitted to the office through a wireless communication method. The monitoring sensors are composed of the rain gauge to measure rainfall, the load cell system to measure the weight of dredged sediments, and water level meter to measure the water level behind debris barrier. The management criteria of dredged sediments behind debris barrier was suggested by using the weight of dredged sediments. At first, the maximum weight of dredged sediments that could be deposited behind debris barrier was estimated. And then when 50%, 70% and 90% of the maximum dredged sediments weight were accumulated behind debris barrier, the management criteria were divided into phases of Outlooks, Watch and Warning, respectively. The weight of dredged sediments can be monitored by using the dredged sediment management system behind debris barrier in real time, and the condition of debris barrier and the removal time of dredged sediments can be decided based on monitoring results.

The establishment of the scheme which could be managed the national reservoir efficiently and consideration of a variable management scheme by the application of a new technique for it is very important for the improvement of national service quality and application of related techniques. In this study, sediment information which was accumulated in the reservoir for a long time and occasioned the decrease of pondage and increase of water pollution was constructed rapidly and accurately using GPS, sub bottom profiler and echo sounder. And the calculation system of sediment was efficiently designed through the applications of 2D and 3D spatial information processing techniques. As a results, the calculation system of sediment which was accomplished a various functions was developed and a basic information of management for the reservoir which was constructed quite a while ago was presented.
This study proposes an efficient management plan for improving the water quality of agricultural reservoirs. Hongdong reservoir is located in an area that includes farmland, forest, residential housing, and livestock farms. The levels of pollutants in Hongdong reservoir were investigated with the aim of improving the water quality in the reservoir. The potential concentrations of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) in Hongdong reservoir were 1.06-3.67 and 0.52-1.12 $g/m^2-d$, respectively. An analysis of leaching characteristics was performed under anaerobic conditions for 72 hours at $20^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of T-P and $PO_4$-P were measured by general leaching for a set period. In the case of T-P, the leaching was measured by irregular leaching due to denitrification of nitrite nitrogen ($NO_2$-N) and nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N). A very small amount of $NH_3$-N on nitrogen ($N_2$) was measured due to the low pH in the column, as a consequence of the anaerobic conditions.
More recently, there have been significant changes in the forms of channels due to runoff characteristics driven by climate changes and other alterations in basin/channel environments. Particularly, increasing local deposition in major channels is being observed nationwide. Of such phenomena, it is noteworthy that flood-plains show unidirectional growth and lowering of channels within compound channels in the form of a high-flow plain. These changes are supposed to affect management of the river ecology as well as flood control. In this study, the research on channels in Korea confirmed that the phenomenon of local deposition in those channels is actually taking place, rendering a problem to be urgently addressed. Previous studies on bed changes have been focused on low channels based on bed materials distributed over the channels. However, this research has proved that surface-layer deposition of a high-flow plain is closely related with changes in the conditions of ground surfaces and, ultimately, affects the bed of the entire channel as well. According to the intensive research on the condition of the high-flow plain of the mouth of the Han River, the silt deposited in the high-flow plain was the main cause of settlement/growth of vegetation. And this leads to landforming along with woods-forming, disturbing flood control as well as the normal river ecology.
