In this work, the adsorption characteristic of the composites by adding loess with aluminum ("Al-loess") and Loess with lanthanum ("La-loess") which have been developed to effectively remove phosphorus, the substance which causes the eutrophic lake has been evaluated. According to the result of the work, as the amount of aluminum or lanthanum put in 1g of loess increases, the combined amount also increases accordingly. When the loess with no aluminum or lanthanum attached was used, the rate of removing phosphorus was different in comparison with the case of using the composites of 0.5, 1 and 2 mg of aluminum and 0.5, 1 and 3 mg of lanthanum in each gram of loess. It was observed the amount required to remove 1 mg $PO_4^{3-}$-P/L of phosphorus completely is approximately 2 to 10 times less for the composite of Al-loess than loess alone. Also, in case of the composite of La-loess, the amount was decreased by about 1.5 to 10 times. In order to observe the rate of adsorption phosphorus with Al-loess and La-loess, the composites were used for the observation up to three times by water washing. As a result, the water washing of the composite did not affect phosphorus removal. According to the effect of pH, there is a high rate of removing phosphorus in the pH range of 5~8. It seems that the developed composite will effectively remove phosphorus when it is spread in the natural water system. Also, since Al-loess and La-loess composites are rapidly precipitated within 30 minutes, it is stabilized quickly at the bottom of the eutrophic lake and becomes responsible for the removal of phosphorus in water and eluted from the water and the sedimentary layer.

A field test on mud flat remediation was carried out in order to observe the effects of the treatments such as microbial dose and an oxygen releasing compound like $CaO_2$. The size of each treatment site was $100m^2$ and the dosage was 3.6 kg per site. The 6 week monitoring showed that pH on two sites was below 7 and ORP increased from .178~-188 mV to .121~-142 mV. In Ignition loss and COD there were no significant changes. Meanwhile nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations changed: ammonia concentration decreased both on control and treatment sites. Nitrate nitrogen decreased more on combined treatment site than on single microbial treatment (11.3% vs. 7.3%) probably because the extra oxygen supplied by $CaO_2$ formed more oxic environment so that the facilitated nitrification might produce more nitrate but the nitrate would be much rapidly released into the water layer out of the sediment. That also explains the total nitrogen reduction(6.1%). Similarly, T-P and $PO_4-P$ reduced by 29% and 31.8%, respectively on combined treatment sites, resulting from the phosphorus release effect though the initial concentrations of the two factors were considerably high.

A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature on the survival, growth and sensitivity of the benthic amphipods, Mandibuluphoxus mai and Monocnrophium acherusicum, which have been recently developed as new sediment toxicity testing species in Korea. The biological performance for each amphipod species was determined by the survival and growth rates at different water temperatures. The influence of temperature on the sensitivity to reference toxicant, Cd, was determined by the comparison of survival rates of amphipods exposed to control and Cd-spiked seawater at different temperatures. Temperature significantly influenced on the survival, growth and Cd sensitivity of both amphipods. Tolerable ranges of temperature for the >80% individuals of both M. mai and M. acherusicum with sediment substrates were mostly overlapped (13 to 22℃). The daily growth rates of M. mai and M. acherkisicum increased proportionally with temperature up to 20℃ and 25℃. respectively. Similarly, the sensitivities of M. mai and M. acheyusicum to Cd increased with temperature up to 20℃ and 15℃, respectively. Overall results showed that temperature is a substantially important factor potentially influencing the results of lethal and sublethal bioassays using the amphipods. Therefore, defining the adequate ranges of experimental temperature for the toxicity testing species is the pre-requisite for the development of standardized bioassay protocols.
The microflora changes of 10 water-controled treatments combined with livestock manures(pig, chicken) and bulking agents(sawdust, paper sludge) were investigated. The B/F values of the P-1 and C-1(65%, $H_2O$) treatments were 3571 and 5400 respectively, but those of the P-4 and C-4(50%, $H_2O$) treatments showed very low values, 667 and 334, respectively. The B/F values tended to increase with higher water content of the treatments. In the composting processes, the successions of microflora, adapting the compost environments, took place via fluctuating temperature. In the high temperature period, the numbers of mesophilic bacteria and fungi decreased, but that of the spore forming bacteria increased. However, the number of mesophilic bacteria inereased during the cold period. The B/F values of compost ranged 25-300, which indicates a decrease in the quantity of bacteria. The time required for the temperature of compost to reach $60^{\circ}C$ showed different patterns. There was no pathogenic microorganism in the treatments which reached a high temperature in a short period of time, but, in the treatments which reached a high temperature over a Long period of time, the pathgenic microorganism was not still alive.
The Fe-component of pyrophyllite is an impurity that reduces its grade in the final product. In order to identify the amount of impurity in pyrophyllite and to remove the Fe from the ore using a dry method, microwave heating and magnetic separation were carried out. Pyrite and hematite were identified to contain pyrophyllite by microscopy, XRD, XRF, SEM/EDS and EPMA analysis. It is suggested that the euhedral pyrite in the pyrophyllite is formed by hydrothermal solution, and then the dissolution cavity structure is formed with a partial remainder of the pyrite which dissolved in acidic water. And the $Fe^{3+}$ ion contained in the acidic water precipitated out in the concentric structure of hematite as the origin of sedimentary structure. As a result of the microwave heating and magnetic separation experiments, the Fe removal rates obtained were 96% and 93% from pyrophyllite ore from the Sunsan mine and Wando mine, respectively. It is confirmed that the microwave heating and magnetic separation method was an environmentally friendly method to upgrade the low-grade pyrophyllite.
The New Hebrides Basin is an inactive non back-arc basin located at the convergent boundary of the Pacific and Info-Australian plates. This basin was formed from 46 Ma to 60 Ma. The basin has two spreading episodes with rates of 34 mm/a for 42 to 47 Ma and 17 mm/a for 47 to 60 Ma. The sediments covered in the basin has uniform thickness of 0.65 sec. The age-depth correlation curve of the New Hebrides Basin can be represented by the following equation: $Depth(m)=2689+312\sqrt{Age}(Ma)$ The coefficient of 312 in this equation is close to that for major oceans, 350. This suggests that the cooling processes of the lithospheres in the New Hebrides Basin and major oceans are similar to each other. Free-air gravity anomalies of the basin varying from -22.3 mgal to +59.0 mgal. The mean value is +30.2 mgal higher than those of the normal oceans. Moderately large free-air gravity anomalies in the New Hebrides Basin are presumably owing to its location on a marginal swell along the New Hebrides Trench. It is generally observed that the ocean floor is very gently uplifted in a zone about 200 km oceanward of the trench axis. Positive free-air gravity anomalies amounting to $50{\sim}60$ mgal are usually observed on the crest of the swell. This topography is presumably by bending of the oceanic lithosphere so as to dynamically maintain nonisostatic states for some duration.
The monthly distribution of marine bacteria in the coastal waters of Chung-Mu was investigated from April, 1976 to March, 1977. The aim of this study was to obtain basic data for the prevention of food poisoning and for the efficient aquaculture of the area. Samples of sea water, mud, fish and shell fish were taken every month. The results are as follows: 1. One thousand four hundred and twenty-six strains were isolated from 732 samples of sea water, mud, fish and shell fish. They were 450 strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, 422 strains of Achromobacter liquefacience, 72 strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 234 strain of Vibrio alginolyticus, and 248 strains of Proteus vulgaris. 2. V. parahaemolyticus occupied $9.84\%$ of the total samples and $52\%$ of them were found in the sea water and mud. 3. The muds sampled districtly beneath the aquaculture raft contained much gas. They seemed to originate from the deposition of excretion of shell fish. The fatness of the shell fish was low where the gas was abundant. 4. It was .found that the shell fish with low fatness contained much Vibrio sp. 5. Regional distribution shows that marine bacteria were abundant in the order of station 10, 9, 8, 11, 1. The area around station 9 was polluted by reclamation of the area, and station 8 showed the influence of the excrement treat tank located nearly.

A variety of informations obtained from satellite image, digital elevation relief map (DEM), borehole logging, televiewer, geophysical prospecting, etc were synthetically analyzed to investigate subsurface geological and structural characteristics and to evaluate geohazard pertinent to fault-damage in the Busan metropolitan city. It is revealed that the geology is composed of the Cretaceous andesitic$\sim$dacitic volcanics, gabbro, and granitoid and that at least three major faults including the Dongrae fault are developed in the study area. Based on characteristics of topography, fault-fractured zone, and isobath maps of the Quaternary sediments and weathered residuals of the basement, the Dongrae fault is decreased in its width and fracturing intensity of damaged zone from south toward north, and the fault is segmented around the area between the Seomyeon and Yangieong junctions. Meanwhile, we drew a geohazard sectional map using the five major parameters that significantly suggest damage intensity of basement by fault, i.e. distance from fault core, TCR, RQD, uniaxial rock strength, and seismic velocity of S wave. The map is evaluated as a suitable method to express the geological and structural characteristics and fault-damaged intensity of basement in the study area. It is, thus, concluded that the proposed method can contribute to complement and amplify the capability of the present evaluation system of rock mass.
The bird track fossil site in Haman Formation is divided into seven sedimental layers by the sedimentary structures, lithofacies and sequences. The bird tracks top on the highest layer, which includes ripple marks and suncracks. The layer has lithofacies with reddish grey siltstone and dark grey mudstone, alternately. As an analysis for the same rocks of the fossil site, physical properties show on mean values for 0.62% of absorption rate, 1.64% of porosity and 2.63 of specific gravity. Rock-forming minerals composed mainly of plagioclase, quartz, calcite, chlorite and mica. Meanwhile, we executed an experiments based on the petrography and weatherings to find a proper consolidants. In the experiments, the OH 100 reagent proved stable aspect and the lowest transition rate in terms of weight and chromaticity. Also, it showed the highest increase in ultrasonic velocity, improving the physical properties of the rocks. In the case of applying the OH 100 with antihygro, an swelling inhibitors on the sedimentary rocks, the chromaticity indicated an stable transition aspect. When it comes to the physical properties, the antihygro also decreases the porosity effectively. Thus, the most proper method for the fossil site of Haman Formation is to apply antihygro and OH 100 reagents since the rocks includes clay minerals that show swelling characteristics. However, this result is deduced from an indoor application experiments, leaving the necessity of verification how these reagents would affect the bird tracks site under the field condition.
Wetlands are vulnerable to biological invasion by alien species, because they function as sinks that accumulate excess water, sediments, nutrients, and other contaminants from the surrounding watersheds by disturbance. In this study, to understand the status and characteristics of the alien plants based on the type of wetlands, we classified 24 ecologically outstanding wetlands and analyzed the status of alien flora. A total of 130 alien plants were found in the wetlands, accounting for 11% of the total plant species. Among them, the Asteraceae species was the most diverse, with 40 species. Erigeron annuus and Oenothera ordorata had the highest frequency of occurrence. The species richness of alien plants in the riverine and lacustrine wetlands (average: 30 species) was higher than that in the mountainous palustrine wetlands (average: 10 species). The same results were found in the naturalization index, urbanization index, and ratio of annuals and biennials, which indicate the degree of artificial interference. In the cluster analysis, the riverine and lacustrine wetlands were combined, and only the mountainous palustrine wetlands were separated. The number of alien plants is remarkably low in the mountainous palustrine wetlands, and it is considered to be the influence of Erigeron strigosus, Symphytum officinale, and Bilderdykia convolvulus, not found in the other types of wetlands. In particular, invasive alien plants such as Aster pilosus, Ambrosia trifida, Sicyos angulatus, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior were found intensively in the riverine wetlands. Therefore, it is considered that a methodical management is urgently required considering the dispersal of alien plants in the riverine and lacustrine wetlands with high artificial interference.
