Comparison of Removal Efficiencies in Single and Duplex Ventilation Constructed Wetland Systems for Treating Domestic Sewage (단일 통풍형과 이중 통풍형 인공습지시스템의 하수처리 효율 비교)

  • To develop environmentally friendly constructed wetlands(CWs) for treating domestic sewage which was produced in farming and fishing village, the efficiency of water treatment at different ventilation systems in the vertical bed, depths of horizontal bed, and sewage loads was investigated. In the vertical bed, BOD and COD by duplex ventilation system were lower than those by single ventilation system. But T-N and T-P concentrations by both ventilation systems in the vertical bed were little different. In the horizontal bed, BOD, COD, T-N and T-P in 1.0 m and 1.3 m depths were little different. To reduce the CWs' area and to improve the pollutant removal efficiencies, the optimum depth of horizontal bed was 1.3 m. In single and duplex ventilation CWs, the removal rate of BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased slightly with the sewage load increases. In same sewage load conditions, the removal rates of BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P by duplex ventilation CWs were higher than those by single ventilation CWs. In summary, to effectively treat domestic sewage from farming and fishing village, the optimum constructed wetlands would be the duplex ventilation CWs.

  • Domestic automobile companies have adopted drum type brake system for commercial vehicles. However recently those companies have been applying disc-brake system to solve vehicle control-instability and inefficient heat discharge performance of conventional drum brake system for a medium commercial vehicle. Because the kinetic energy of a running commercial vehicle is relatively high, the brake system should discharge lots of heat energy while braking. A ventilated type brake disc has been used to increase heat discharge performance of a brake system. The vent structure of a disc highly affects cooling efficiency. This paper compares thermal characteristics of three types of vent structure in JASO C421 braking condition. It is found that the slant bend type disc has the lowest temperature and thermal stress distributions in the braking condition.

  • Aspergillus sp. F184 was isolated from soil for the development of new xanthine oxidase inhibitor. This xanthine oxidase inhibitor was sequentially purified by filtration, HP-20 adsorption column chromatography, ethyl acetate extraction, silica gel column chromatography and crystallization, and was named as YUX 104. YUX 104 was identified to be 5,6-epoxy-2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclohexene-1,4-dione(terreic acid) by NMR and mass spectroscopic sudies.

  • Alternator noises are composed of magnetic noise, mechanical noise, and ventilation noise. These noises depend on the design of magnetic parts and fans, the machining accuracy of each element, and assembled conditions. In running alternator there are various exciting forces which can generate noises and vibrations. In order to identify the noise sources of the alternator, the characteristics of noises and vibrations are analyzed as rotating speed is increased. And the experiment for structural vibration is carried out. From results of experimental study, the noise sources are identified and their contributions to the overall noise level are investigated. Their results can lead the instruction to the noise reduction on the alternator.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 높은 직업적 작업부하(Work stress)에 노출되어 있는 경찰들이 사 용하는 개인보호장비를 대상으로 사용자 중심의 설계기준에 기초한 인간공학적인 분석과 개선을 통하여 경찰의 임무수행도의 향상은 물론 직업에 따른 신체적인 안전과 건강의 향상을 도모하는데 있다. 주요 연구대상 장비는 방석복, 헬멧, 방패였으며, 개선의 주요 사항으로는 장비별 무게의 경감, 열압박의 감소와 통풍성의 향상, 사용성과 안전성을 향 상시킨 재질과 구조적인 개선을 가져왔으며 개선안에 대한 시제품을 제작하였다.

  • The handling and processing of agricultural products in Korea is done manually. Small plastic boxes, nets, and corrugated cardboard boxes are used as containers during harvesting, sorting and other product handling operations. However, these practices are labor-intensive, time-consuming, require various kinds of packing materials, and are expensive because of high operating costs. To overcome these problems, the use of pallet bins with pre-cooling and storage features for handling and processing bulk farm products was investigated. The airflow resistances through bulk potato, onion and mandarin stocks were measured, and the pallet bins and a pressure pre-cooling device were manufactured. The opening ratio, bed depth and airflow rate through bulk potato, onion and mandarin in the pallet bin were defined with regression equations. The cooling rates of bulk potato, onion and mandarin were 0.8C/h ($21.7{\rightarrow}0C$, 14.5 h), 0.4C/h ($15.4{\rightarrow}.0C$, 32.2 h) and 0.7C/h ($13.7{\rightarrow}C$, 18.8 h), respectively, with the pressure pre-cooling system. Temperature deviances for storage of bulk potato, onion and mandarin were 0.12C, 0.12C and 0.17C, respectively.

  • Xanthine oxidase involved in pruine metabolism oxidizes hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. The derangement of pruine metabolism results in gout that associates painful deposit of monosodium urate in the cartilage of joints. In the continuous study for natural compound, six flavan-3-ols have been isolated from the leaves of Oolong tea. The structures of procyanidin B-1, B-3, procyanidin B-3-3-O-rhamnose, procyanidin B-1-3-O-gallate, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin-3-O-gallate were established by NMR and their inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase activity was investigated. Flavan-3-ols containing the gallate had a high inhibitory capacity. Procyanidin B-1-3-O-gallate showed complete inhibition at $50\;{\mu}M$ and inhibited on the xanthine oxidase competitively.

Isolation of a Novel Polyphenol from Oolong Tea and Its Effective Prevention of the Gout (우롱차로터 새로운 Polyphenol 분리 및 통풍 예방 효과)

  • Eighty percent of acetone extract were isolated from the leaves of Korean Oolong tea using Sephadex LH-20, MCI-gel, Fuji gel. The compound reacted the red and the blue with anisaldehyde and $FeCl_3$, respectively. Instrumental analysis of the derivatives of this compound showed that the chemical structure was decided to $epicatechin-(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate$ as a kind of dimeric proanthocyanidine, that bound with -(-)epicatechin and -(-)epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate, at the upper and the lower, respectively. Considering inhibition effect on xanthin oxidase by 62% levels at $50{\;}{\mu}mole$, this compound showed a possibility to be used as a new material for functional food.

A Study for Aerodynamic Drag Reduction on Variable Message Sign using Flow Analysis (유동해석 기반 도로전광표지 공기저항 저감 구조 연구)

  • As the demand of Variable Message Sign(VMS) has become pervasive in fulfilling the ITS policy, the costs of maintaining the Variable Message Sign operation have also increased. This paper proposes the U-curved figure, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type for aerodynamic drag reduction on Variable Message Sign and shows the analysis of aerodynamic drag effects using Flow Analysis. As a results of the flow analysis for right-angled, 45 degrees from side to side and 45 degrees from up or down, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type show about 30% aerodynamic drag reduction in all direction. And the U-curved figure type shows vivid aerodynamic drag reduction for right-angled and 45 degree from side to side, but trivial aerodynamic drag reduction for 45 degree from up or down. It is possible to reduce not only the damage on Variable Message Sign due to typhoon because of the aerodynamic drag reduction, but also installation constraints because of lighter Variable Message Sign support structure by appling the proposed structure and analysis in this paper.

An Evaluation of Human Thermal Comfort and Improvement of Thermal Environment by Spatial Structure (공간 구조별 열쾌적성 평가와 열환경 개선방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate human thermal comfort by spatial structure and to explore solutions to improve the thermal environment of a small urban space. The study site was Korea University campus. Thermal conditions were measured to evaluate the quality of the thermal environment in each type of space within the study site. Micrometeorology measurements, analysis of space characteristics for using fish-eye lens photography, and thermal comfort modeling through the use of collected meteorological data, such as temperature and humidity, were performed. Results showed that the level of thermal comfort for humans differs depending on the types of space within the study site. Thermal comfort is better in open spaces than enclosed in the aspect of radiative mean temperature, Predicted Mean Vote(PMV), and Physiologically Equivalent Temperature(PET). This fact is probably due to shadows or buildings or trees that may block solar radiation. Thus, it is necessary to consider the spatial arrangements of buildings and trees to enhance openness and ventilation in the space. Paving materials and exterior building materials should also be selected to lower the radiant temperature. Given these results, a quantitative evaluation on human thermal comfort could propose a way to plan user comfortable small urban spaces. Study methods used and results provided in the study can promote a better way for urban space planning direction to improve environmental quality.
