  • This paper is a descriptive study that aims to investigate attitudes towards menstruation, symptoms and coping behaviors in order to develop a program for building positive attitudes toward menstruation in primary school students. The mean age of menarche was 12.3 years, and students generally showed negative attitudes towards menstruation. Students who experienced menarche had relatively more positive attitudes than those who did not. However, no significant difference was exhibited. Menstrual symptoms occurred rarely or at a moderate level by showing a low score of 2.12 points. Of all sub-factors, 'pain' was the most serious. The most common coping behaviors during menstruation was 'I take a warm shower' and 'I take a rest or nap', while respondents rarely checked 'I take vitamin B supplements' and 'I take painkiller'. Based on the above findings, the study intends to perform a systematic study to further identify the factors affecting menstrual attitudes in primary school students. In addition, this paper suggests effective healthcare education on menstruation to build positive attitudes towards menstruation and education and counseling programs for adopting appropriate coping strategies to deal with menstrual symptoms.

  • Purpose: This study was intended to measure the knowledge and attitudes of nurses working in a psychiatric ward regarding the subject of pain. Methods: In this descriptive study, data were collected in psychiatric wards(or hospitals) located in the Kyungnam and Kyungpook area from December 2013 to January 2014, using a modified version of the McCaffrey and Pasero Clinical Manual Survey Regarding Pain. The content of the survey follows a logical progression from common pain management problems through mechanisms of pain, assessment and pharmacology. Results: The average score of knowledge regarding pain was roughly $21.59{\pm}2.93$ among the 181 participants. The nurses selected Tylenol as the preferred choice (81.2%). Seventy-one percent of respondents didn't use Pain Intensity Instruments during the pain assessment. The subjects preferred the Numerical Rating Scale rather than Visual Analogue Scales. Pharmacology questions were the least likely to be answered correctly. No specific correlations were found between score and demographic variables of age and experience. No specific correlation between score and educational level was noted. Conclusion: Nurses require ongoing education on pain management, particularly regarding pharmaceutical agents.

  • Despite their sometimes fatal complications such as respiratory depression when used for postoperative pain control, intravenous and epidural narcotics remain the mainstay of treatment regimens. Because of the problems, anesthesiologists are seeking alternatives. We compared the analgesic effect and complications of continuous intravenous morphine with ketorolac. Ketorolac is a non-steroidal agent with potent analgesics and moderate anti-inflammatory activity. Forty ASA physical status I or II patients were given morphine(20 patients) or ketorolac(20 patients):In the morphine group, an initial bolus dose of 2 mg i.v. was given followed by continuous infusion at a rate of 1 mg/hr for 48 hours. The ketorolac group was given initial bolus of 30 mg i.v. This was followed by continuous infusion at a rate of 3.75 mg/hr for 48 hours using a Baxter Daymate Infuser. We checked systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure, heart rate, visual analogue scale(VAS) and the Prince Henry Score(PHS). This was done before the initial bolus, at 5, 15, 30 and 60 min, at 2, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after administration. We observed the side effects nausea and vomiting, pruritus, hypotension, somnolence, urinary retention and respiratory depression. From our study we believe ketorolac in selected patients, is as effective as morphine in alleviating postoperative pain without side effects of morphine.

  • Objectives : Effects of repetitive electroacupuncture(EA) on the pain behavior and activation of spinal glial cells were examined in the rat model of neuropathic pain. Methods : Twenty one adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into 3 groups(control group, SP6 group, ST36+GB34 group). Neuropathic pain was induced by tight ligation of L5 spinal nerve. Mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity of hind paw were tested. Immunohistochemistry was performed in spinal cord L5/6 of all groups. EA was treated once in a day from the $5^{th}$ day after surgery. Results : EA treatments applied to ST36 and GB34 reduced significantly both of mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity after 3 times of treatment throughout the experiments. In the SP6 group, the analgesic effect was also shown after 7 times of treatment. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated inhibition of microglia and astrocyte activation in the spinal cord L5/6 dorsal horn in the ST36+GB34 group. Conclusions : The present results suggest that repetitive EA exert strong analgesic effect on neuropathic pain. These analgesic effects in neuropathic pain are associated with suppressing the activation of microglia and astrocyte.

  • This study aimed to identify factors influencing the preferences for end-of-life (EOL) care among undergraduate nursing students. In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from December 2017 to February 2018. This study included 217 undergraduate nursing students. Factors influencing the preference for 'autonomous physiological decision-making' were the following: education level(by grade), having biomedical education, attitude towards death, and attitude towards life-sustaining treatments (LSTs). Preference for 'decision-making by healthcare professionals' was related to having a religion. Factors influencing the preference for 'spirituality' were education level, having a religion, and academic major satisfaction. Preference for 'pain control' was associated with education level, experience with dying patients, bad self-rated health, attitude towards death, and attitude towards LSTs. The study findings suggest that education regarding LSTs, EOL care, and EOL decision-making in nursing curricula is essential.
