  • It is necessary to determine a nitrogen supplying capacity (NSC) of soil for sustainable agriculture. NSC has been decided by directly detecting N mineralization potential (NMP) and inorganic nitrogen or by indirectly approximating from organic matter and chemical properties of soil. NMP is best method for NSC but it takes long period. A study was conducted to find a short-term incubation method using pepsin through 1) determining NMP of 3 upland and 3 paddy soils, 2) establishing analytical condition of pepsin digestion by comparing to NMP, 3) validating with relations to N requirements for maximum yield of rice. NMPs of 6 soils were ranges from $63mg\;N\;kg^{-1}$ to $156mg\;N\;kg^{-1}$. The pepsin digestion method of soil nitrogen was established by determining amino nitrogen from digesting 5 g of soil for 30 minutes by 0.02% pepsin. This method was so highly correlated with a maximum rate of nitrogen fertilizer that it could be used for determining NSC in paddy soil.

  • This study analyzed heavy metal concentration, mineral composition, and spectral characteristics of heavy metal contaminated soil samples of cropland and rice field located in downstream of abandoned Okdong coal mine. X-ray fluorescence analysis detected heavy metal elements including cadmium, copper, arsenic, lead, zinc and nickel in the soils. Both cropland and rice field samples were severely contaminated with arsenic showing higher concentration over the concerned standard. The pollution index of cropland samples was higher than that of rice field samples. X-ray powder diffraction analysis identified that the mineral composition of cropland and rice field samples is similar with quartz, calcite, kaolinite, illite, smectite, magnetite and hematite. The range of organic matter content were more widely distributed in cropland samples. The spectral analysis showed that the reflectance spectra and the absorption features of cropland and rice field samples were alike. The absorption features that appeared near 490nm and 900nm were attributed to the ferric iron, and clay minerals such as kaolinite and smectite caused the absorption features at 1410nm, 1910nm and 2200nm. The reflectance of the soil spectral decreased with an increase in organic content. The absorption depths of both types of soil samples decreased with higher organic matter content at 490nm and 1916nm as well as higher heavy metal concentration.

  • To investigate the effects of organic matter and soil depth on soil water flow in a multi-layered soil, the saturated hydraulic conductivities(Ksat) were measured from the single- and multi-layered soil columns, that the soils were mixed with the oven-dried cow manure compost(CMC) at 4 different ratios such as 0, 2, 4, and 6% on a weight basis. The measured hydraulic conductivities(Ksat) were compared with theoretical hydraulic conductivity (Keff calculated by Jury's equation of effective hydraulic conductivity. In the single layered soil column saturated hydraulic conductivities(Ksat) were significantly decreased with increasing the application rate of compost. In the multi-layered the soil columns Ksat was also decreased with increasing rate of compost and soil depth. Calculated Keff showed the similar results of Ksat as obtained from the measured Ksat, whereas steadily increased with increasing soil depth. Therefore, modification of Jury's equation should be required to adapt theoretical Keff for Held application.

  • The plant uptake of endosulfan, a new persistent organic pollutants from soil environment was investigated on ginseng through the field survey in Korea. The endosulfan residues in soil for this survey were ranged on 0.013-0.136 mg kg-1. The plant uptake factor (PUF) for endosulfan in ginseng was 0.243-1.708 and the highest PUF was found on 3-year-old ginseng. The PUF for endosulfan decreased in the longer cultivation period and it might be caused by the dilution effect of ginseng growth. In addition, the soil organic matter (SOM) content affected on the PUF negatively and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between SOM and PUF was -0.7812 (p <0.05). Thus, higher SOM would positively affect to reduce the endosulfan residue in ginseng root.

  • This study was designed to understand the relationships among the soil physical and chemical properties and to obtain the useful regression to calculate the cation exchange capacity, field capacity, wilting point moisture content and organic matter content. Fourteen soil properties were collected from 315 representative soil series in Korea. Simple and multiple regression were analyzed with the data by grouping land use, drainage class and soil depth. The multiple regression equations which can be calculated the cation exchange capacity from clay and organic matter content were found out. Cation exchange capacity of clay was 22me/100g, and that of organic matter was 103.3me/100g. Moisture retentions, both of wilting point moisture content and field capacity, were closely related to clay and organic matter content. The coefficient of clay was increased with drainage class changed more poor but the coefficient of organic matter was highest at moderately well drained soil. Organic matter content can be calculated by soil texture and pH. Organic matter content was decreased by in creasing the pH. The highly significant regressions were found between base saturation and pH.

  • The effect of compost to force the cultivation using various soil and vegetation was investigated 5 times in the field for 4 years. Sewage sludge compost was validated to be useful fertilizer for the growth of a plant. and the optimal amendment amounts of compost to soil depended on the kinds of soil and vegetation, and the organic contents of compost. In the case of compost with high organic content. the optimal amended compost weight was 0.12t/are in fertile-dark brown(eutrophic) soil, 0.2t/are in sandy soil(trophic) and 0.4t/are in infertile-dark brown(oligotrophic) soil, respectively. In the case of compost with low organic content. on the other hand, the amentments of compost up to 0.6t/are was allowable without negative effect on the applied vegetation. Consequently, it can be believed that the sewage sludge compost is useful fertilizer, if keep the optimal amendment amounts(0.4t/are. year) to improve soil on cultivation of vegetation.

  • The investigations were conducted to improve the physical properties by analyzing physico-chemical properties on the different soil families of textures at 20 upland fields located in the parts of Gyengsangbuk-do area. Soil physico-chemical properties were analyzed for bulk density, hardness, porosity, moisture, pH, EC and organic mater by soil depth on the different soil families of textures. Bulk density distributions were higher than 1.2 Mg $m^{-3}$ in the optimum range. Hardness distributions were lower than 20 mm in the optimum range. Therefore, the physical properties of upland soil was deteriorated. Correlation coefficient of bulk density with hardness and organic mater were higher significantly, that was positive and negative, respectively. The soil hardness had the greatest distribution degree to the crop yield and bulk density and organic matter followed. Conclusively, To improve the physical properties of upland soil was more effective to fertilizing organic matter than other ways.

  • A series of laboratory experiments were carried out to find the effects of soil organic matter contents, soil temperature, pH values, kinds and amount of nitrogen fertilizers on the denitrification-$N_2O$ gas evolution-. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Denitrification rate, amount of $N_2O$ gas evolution, was influenced the order of organic matter contents>soil temperature>pH values>kinds of N-fertilizer>levels of N-fertilizer. 2. The highest dentrification rate was observed in organic matter content of 3.0%, pH values at 6.0 with application of $KNO_3$ at levels of 20 mgN/100g soil. 3. For the evolution of I mole $N_2O$ gas, averaged carbon consumption was obtained as 0.5 mole in all these experiment condition. However, the highest carbon consumption rate was obtained in organic matter contents for 1.0% with application of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ at levels of 10 mgN/100g soil (1.06 mole) while lowest carbon consumption rate was obtained in organic matter contents for 3.0% with application of $KNO_3$ at levels of 20 mgN/100g soil (0.13 mole). 4. According to Michaelis-Menten's equation, the V/2 values for evolution of $N_2O$ gas was estimated by progress curve. The results obtained was as 550 ug for $(NH_2)_2CO$ and 1100 ug $N_2O/100g$ soil by application of $KNO_3$ in organic matter contents of 1.0% soil. On the other hand, when the application $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ the V/2 values of $N_2O$ gas was obtained as the amount of 490 ug/100g soil while V/2 values of $N_2O$ gas by application of $KNO_3$ was on the linear line in soil organic matter contents of 3.0%.
