  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of zerovalent iron and basic oxygen furnace slag on arsenic stabilization in soils. For this, arsenic (V) contaminated soil and roxarsone contaminated soil were incubated after incorporation with zerovalent iron (ZVI) or basic oxygen furnace slage (BOFS) at four different levels (0%, 1%, 3%, and 5%) for 30 days and then the residual concentrations of arsenic were analysed following extraction with aqua reqia, 1N HCl and 0.01 M $CaCl_2$. The total concentration of arsenic was 2,285 mg/kg in the As(V) contaminated soil and 6.5 mg/kg in the roxarsone contaminated soil. 1 N HCl extractable arsenic concentration in the As(V) contaminated soil was initially 1,351 mg/kg and this was significantly declined by 713~1,034 mg/kg following incubation with ZVI while BOFS treatment showed no effect on the stabilization of inorganic arsenate except 5% treatment which showed around 100 mg/kg reduction in 1N HCl extractable arsenic. Similarly, in the roxarsone contaminated soil 1N HCl extractable concentration of arsenic was reduced from 3.13 mg/kg to 0.69 mg/kg with ZVI treatment increased from 1% to 5% while BOFS treatment did not lead to any statistically significant reduction. Available (0.01M $CaCl_2$ extractable) arsenic was initially 0.85 mg/kg in the As(V) contaminated soil and this declined by 0.79 mg/kg following incorporation with 5% ZVI, which accounted for more than 90% of the available As in the control. When As(V)-contaminated soil was treated with BOFS, the available arsenic was increased due to competing effect of the phosphate originated from BOFS with arsenate for the adsorption sites. For the roxarsone contaminated soil, the greater the treatment of ZVI or BOFS, the lower the available arsenic concentration although it was still higher than that of the control.

  • A long-term leaching column experiment was performed to evaluate the teachability of the stabilized lead-contaminated soil using soluble phosphate. The study shows that Pb in the leachate was little detected and the remaining $PO_4-P$ concentration kept below 0.1 mg/L due to the formation of geochemically stable lead phosphate minerals from the reactions of labile soil Pb forms with the added soluble phosphate salt. After the experiment, there was no Pb migration from the top to the bottom of the stabilized soil column. But the Pb concentrations of the 12 soil samples from the control column decreased with the increase of the soil depth.

  • Surfactants have been extensively considered for decontamination of the subsurface polluted with hydrophobic organic compounds. In order to investigate the effect of molecular structures on the solubilization of hydrophobic organic compounds, solubility enhancement of two PAHs in solutions of three different surfactants-conventional, dianionic, and gemini. The batch experimental results showed that the gemini was the most effective and the dianionic was the least, indicating that organic carbon content of the surfactants was the major factor which determines the sorption capacity of surfactant aggregates in water, unlike some of the previous reports.

  • An environmental survey from three abandoned metal mine areas was undertaken on to assess the risk of adverse health effects on human exposure to heavy metals influenced by past mining activities. Tailings contained high concentrations of heavy metals may have a impact on soils and waters around the tailing piles. In order to perform the human risk assessment, chemical analysis data of soils, rice grains and waters for As, Cd, Cu and Pb have been used. The HQ values for heavy metals via the rice consumption were significantly higher compared with other exposure pathways in all metal mine areas. The resulting HI values in three mine areas were higher than 9.0, and their toxic risk due to rice ingestion was strong in these mine areas. The cancer risk of being exposed to As by the rice consumption from the A, B and C mine areas was $5.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$, $6.8\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ and $3.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$, respectively. The As cancer risk via the exposure pathway of rice ingestion from these mine areas exceeds the acceptable risk of 1 in 10,000 set for regulatory purposes. Thus, the daily intakes of rice by the local residents from these mine areas can pose a potential health threat if exposed by long-term As exposure.

  • The quantity of noxious wastes generated by the growth in industrialization and population in all over the world and its potential hazards in subsurface environments are becoming increasingly significant. The extraction of the contaminant from the soil and movement of the water are restricted due to the low permeability and adsorption characteristics of the reclaimed soils. Incorporated technique with PVDs have been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils for the purpose of ground improvement by means of soil flushing and soil vapor extraction systems. This paper is to evaluate several key parameters that affected to the performance of the PVDs specifically with regard to: well resistance of PVD, zone of influence, and smear effects. In the feasibility of contaminant remediation was evaluated in pilot-scale laboratory experiments. Well resistance is affected on the vertical discharge capacity of the PVDs under the various vacuum pressures. The discharge capacity increases consistently in areal extents with higher applied vacuum up to a limiting vacuum pressure. The head values for each piezometer at different vacuum pressures show that the largest head loss occurs within 14 cm of the PVD. Air flow rates and head losses were measured for the PVD placed in the model test box and the gas permeability of the silty soils was calculated. Increasing the equivalent diameter results in a decrease in the calculated gas permeability. It is concluded that the gas permeability determined over the 1,500 to 2,000 $cm^3/s$ flow rates are the most accurate values which yields gas permeability of about 3.152 Darcy.

  • This study presents the quantitative exposure assessment of indoor radon released from groundwater. Most of the Indoor radon comes directly from soil beneath the basement or foundation. Recently, radon in groundwater releases to indoor air whenever the water is used and contributes to the total inhalation risk from indoor air. This study first develops a mathematical model to describe the transfer and distribution of radon released from groundwater in a house. Then, daily human exposures through inhalation or such radon are estimated with the model for an male adult based on two sets of exposure scenarios. The results obtained from the study would help increase the understanding of risk assessment issues associated with the indoor radon released from groundwater.

  • This study is described in heavy metal pollution by the stony mountain development using field case. The heavy metal pollution is investigated for nearby area (soil and stream) of the developed stony mountain, and then the countermeasure using contamination analysis is suggested. The investigation result indicated that contamination of Sammak stream caused by the stone dust and leachate at the stony mountain development. Therefore, the heavy metal pollution is evaluated by using Pollution Index(PI). The evaluation results confirmed that the contaminated groundwater was the leading cause of the contamination in Sammak stream and nearby soil. Therefore, the Permeable Reaction Barrier(PRB), which has a environmentally-friendly reactant, should be applied to control a heavy metal of groundwater, and it will be a reasonable countermeasure.

  • A non-discharged system of sequentially physico-chemical water treatment was used to treat the contaminated water produced from washing system of soils according to full-scale soil washing. After washing the TPH contaminated soils, the remaining concentrations of COD$_{Mn}$, SS, and n-hexane were analyzed for each compartment to estimate the treatment efficiencies of non-discharged system. Three times of sampling events were conducted for 4 different compartments (sediment tank, flocculation tank, oil/water separator, and process-water tank). In addition, soil washing efficiencies and concentrations of each parameter (COD$_{Mn}$, SS, and n-hexane) for process-water tank were analyzed for about 8 months. As results, the average efficiency of soil washing was high to have 95.9%, regardless of the condition of TPH contamination level for soils, as well as the concentrations of COD$_{Mn}$, SS, and n-hexane in the process-water tank were below the regulation limits of the Water Environmental Conserveation Act. Accordingly, the full-scale washing treatment system in this study could make the washing water 100% recycled which lead the system to be environmentally-friendly and economical.
