In construction jobs, a combination of various kinds of machinery is used to perform earthworks at a large-scale site. Individual equipments essentially cooperate with each other on task such as excavation, load, transfer and compaction. While other area have studied cooperation system, related study in domestic construction is in poor condition. In this study, construction equipment fleet management system is developed for solving this problem and find way to improving efficiency in earthworks site. The entire concept of the fleet management system, including its components and process, has been systematically outlined in this paper. An operational methodology has also been suggested, where a number of machines, such as the excavators, trucks and compactors, are chosen and further grouped into a cluster. A case study verify fleet management system's effectiveness on performing task package by comparing existing work method with methodology in this study. Fleet management system in this study is expected to curtail fuel consumption by the reduction of working time and moving distance. Furthermore, it can be anticipated to declining carbon emission effect.

In the construction industry, attempts to evaluate the environmental impact of products through life cycle assessment (LCA) approach has been on the rise. However, the domestic construction industry needs to make rapid decisions due to limited budget and schedule, so it is difficult to carry out a review of the environmental load on all resources. The decision-making process requires information on the major influence factors that should be focused on to reduce environmental load. And this information should be quantified so that it can be linked to environmental impact assessment. In this study, the LCA results of road construction cases were analyzed to provide such information. As a result, diesel, ready-mixed concrete, urethane-based paint, aggregate, and asphalt concrete were found to be the main factors that generated 93.17% of the environmental load in the earthwork type of road project. The total environmental cost caused by these affecting factors when constructing 1 km of earthwork type of road project is 242 million won. The analysis also shows that a 10% reduction in the amount of ready-mixed and asphalt concretes can reduce carbon emissions by 5.02% and 2.28% while reducing environmental costs by 11 million won per kilometer. In order to reduce carbon emissions of the earthwork type of road project, it is necessary to actively develop and introduce new methods and eco-friendly materials to reduce the overall use of ready-mixed concrete and asphalt concrete.
A Building Information Model (BIM) is an attempt to simulate the process of building structures in a three-dimensional (3D) digital space. While the technology is usually applied to structured buildings, bridges, and underground facilities, it is rarely applied to an unstructured environment of earthwork operations. If a BIM is used for earthworks, the 3D simulation can be used for construction equipment guidance and earthwork management. This paper presents a real-time, 3D earthwork BIM that provides a 3D graphical simulation of excavators in conjunction with geographic modeling. Developing a real-time, 3D earthwork BIM requires handling a variety of factors, such as geographical information and vehicular movement. This paper mainly focuses on the management of these attributes and provides a database design for storing and retrieving data. In an example application, a prototype of the 3D earthwork BIM is presented to understand what it would provide when used during earthwork operations at a construction site.

This paper is a study on the earth volume calculation using CAD and LISP(LIST Processing) in the route alignment. The utility enlargement in the industry field and the considerable progress of computer make the automatic design and manufacture for the development of CAD/CAM/CAE technique possible, and the automatic design of civil engineering works is continuously progressive. In this study we are intend to improve an effect of civil engineering work by the automatic earth volume calculation in route alignment. This paper aims to construct the automatic design system of civil engineering work and the procedures; (1) The programming of the self-scanning program of the land information introducing Digital Terrain Model concept in the map (2) Systematic algorithm construction using LISP and grafting CAD system (3) Automatic design and calculation of the mass curve and earth volume.
A construction machine guidance system is an assistance system that helps construction equipment operators dig grounds during excavation work at a construction site. This system has long been applied in the overseas countries of the United States, Japan and Europe. However, the system has not been paid much attention in Korea. The objective of this paper is to present a business model for adopting construction machine guidance systems in Korea and evaluate the effectiveness of applying the system to excavation work. The business model in this study shows a new process of applying construction machine guidance system, business stakeholders and revenues, and suggests the benefits to the business stakeholders. A field test of the construction machine guidance system proves that the system can be applied as a tool that can improve the productivity of excavation work. This productivity improvement consequently demonstrates that the business model in this study is a prospective challenge in improving the effectiveness of excavation work at the construction site.

Earthwork in a large construction project such as a land development generally costs 20-30% of the total cost. The earthmoving process, comprising of four repetitive tasks: loading, hauling, unloading, returning, is quite simple and it does not need delicate or advanced techniques. Therefore, earthmoving earthwork planning can heavily affect the cost and time., and Even a slight deviation from the plan can increase or decrease the cost and time. This study presents a planning model that minimizes average haul distance in a large complex construction project. Based on earthwork planning, practitioners' heuristics, a districting algorithm and Simulated Annealing algorithm were employed to build the model. Districting algorithm plays a role that divides in dividing an earthmoving area into several sections. Simulated annealing provides a function that decides whether a new generated solution is confident. Finally, the proposed model was applied to a real earthmoving project of a large land development. It was found that the model showed approximately 14% improvement in average hauling distance compared to the actual design plan.

Volume survey for earthwork is conducted periodically at every month at large scaled construction sites for request payment for the construction. Currently, the earthwork volume is calculated on the overlapped drawing for two cross sections which were created by new and previous surveying data observed by GPS and TS. However the survey is required lots of time and expenses as it is a pin-point surveying method thus surveyors intend to get data only for the heavy undulated topographic features chosen by himself to save time and expenses. Consequently, it causes poor results due to low dense measurement as well as it's not matched with the results by another surveyors. As a result, the conflicts related in earthwork volume calculation often arises among the owner, contractors and sub contractors. In this study, we developed a method to get surveying data for fast and accurate volume calculation using 3D Mobile Laser System and conducted an application test. Also we carried out experiments for topographic survey using MLS to judge for the application additionally. The results showed that we could reduce a time for cross section survey from 48 hours to 2 hours and collected high dense data which have 0.2m interval instead of 3m interval compare with existing method. Also we could make a map which has high accuracy within 10cm in horizontal through topographic survey using MLS.

Recently, automated construction machines have been developed for technically solving construction industry problems such as labor, productivity, quality and the profit decrease. In domestic construction industry, a research for developing an intelligent excavation robot has been performed. The primary objective of this research is to analysis state-of-the art technologies in order to recognize local ground shape in real-time and compute soil volume of earth moving. This research analyzed five elemental technologies for 3D modeling of local ground shape and selected an optimal technology among the five technologies through using AHP method. It is anticipated that the optimal technology selected for 3D modeling of local ground shape can be effectively used to develop the intelligent excavation robot.
Small-scale UAS(Fusion technique of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles platform and Sensors, 'sUAS') opens various new applications in construction fields and so becoming progressively common due to the considerable potentials in terms of accuracy, costs and abilities. The purpose of this study is that the investigation of the validation on the utilization of sUAS for earth stockpile volume calculations on sites. For this, generate 3D models(DSM) with sUAS aerial images on an cone shaped soil stockpile approximately $270m{\times}300m{\times}20m$, which located at Baegot Life Park in Siheung-si, compared stockpile volume estimates produced by sUAS image analysis, against volume estimates obtained by GNSS Network-RTK ground surveying method which selected as the criteria of earth stockpile volume. The result through comparison and examination show(demonstrate) that there was under 2% difference between the volume calculated with the GNSS Network RTK data and the sUAV data, especially sUAS imaged-based volume estimate of a stockpile can be greatly simplified, done quickly, and very cost effective over conventional terrestrial survey methods. Therefore, with consideration of various plan to assess the height of vegetation, sUAS image-based application expected very useful both volume estimate and 3D geospatial information extraction in small and medium-sized sites.

With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution and the combination of IoT, there have been diverse domestic and foreign researches for the development of construction industry. Especially, in the large-scale earthwork site where many and various construction equipments are put into, the control system between construction equipments is important for the increase of productivity. Thus, after developing the fleet management system for the optimum operation of construction equipments, the problems were checked and improved for each step in the process of application at site. In order to verify the site application process of the fleet management system for the optimum operation of construction equipments, the analysis on the productivity was performed by inputting the data used for the actual site and the site data using this system and then comparing the data through simulation. The analysis was limited to excavator and dump. In the results of the analysis, the rate of work per hour was increased to the range of 4 % while the cost price was decreased to 4 %. Even though the results of the analysis could be different depending on the site applied, the results showing the increase of workload of equipments and the decrease of cost price in the complex project at earthwork site verify the increase of productivity.
