Effect of Fully and Semi Austempering Treament on the Fatigue Properties of Ductile Cast Iron (완전 및 부분 오스템퍼링 처리가 구상흑연주철의 피로특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Single phase bainite structure which is obtained by the conventional austempering treatment reduces the ductility of ductile cast iron. Because of the reduction of ductility it is possible to worsen the fatigue properties. Therefore, semi austempered ductile iron which is treated from ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ is prepared to investigate the static strength and fatigue properties in comparison with fully austempered ductile iron (is treated from ${\gamma}$). In spite of semi austempered ductile iron shows the $86{\%}$ increase of ductility. Also, semi austempered ductile iron shows the higher fatigue limit and lower fatigue crack growth rate as compared with fully austempered ductile iron. By the fractographical analysis, it is revealed that the ferrite obtained by semi austempering process brings about the plastic deformation(ductile striation) of crack tip and gives the prior path of crack propagation. The relatively low crack growth rate in semi austempered specimen is caused by above fractographical reasons.

  • We examined the governing factors of fatigue limit in annealed and austempered ductile iron specimens machined micro hole(dia.<0.4mm) in rotary bending fatigue test. Also, the quantitative relationship between fatigue limit and maximum defect size in specimens was investigated. Artificial defect(micro-pit type, dia.<0.4mm) on specimen surface did not bring about an obvious reduction of fatigue limit in austempered ductile iton(ADI) as compared with annealed ductile iron. According to the investigation of ${\sqrt{area}}_c$ which is the critical defect size to crack initiation at artificial defect, ${\sqrt{area}}_c$ of ADI was larger than that of annealed ductile iron. This shows that the situation of crack initiation at artificial defect in ADI is more difficult in comparison with annealed ductile iron. Maximum defect size is one of the important parameters to predict fatigue limit. And, the quantitative relationship, between the fatigue limit ${\sigma}_{\omega}$ and the maximum defect size ${\sqrt{area}}_{max}$ can be expressed to ${\sigma}_{\omega}^n{\cdot}{\sqrt{area}}_{max}=C_2$ where, $C_2$ are constant. Moreover, it is possible to explain the difference in fatigue limit between, austempered and annealed ductile iron by introducing the parameter ${\delta}(=N_{sg}/N_{total})$in a plain spectimen.

Effect of Austempering Temperatures on the Fractures Characteristic of Grey Cast Iron (오스템퍼링 처리한 회주철의 파괴특성에 미치는 오스템퍼링 온도의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Grey cast iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructure were cast and them austenitized. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered at 250$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ and 350$^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures on mechanical properties and fracture characteristics at the different austempering temperature were investigated. Tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of austempered grey cast iron showed maximum valve 359 MPa, 321 HB, 3.9 CVN respectively at the lowest austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$. $K_{IC}$ of gref cast iron at a austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$, showed maximum 44 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ even though the amount of retained austenite in it is only 16%. This mainly comes from the refinement of the retained austenite. Quasi-cleavage pattern with a little fit of fibrous pattern was shown on the fractured surface of austempered grey cast iron at all of the temperatures tested.

  • An experimental evaluation of bending fatigue strength for austempered ductile iron (ADI) spur gears was performed using a Zwick fatigue tester. The gear material was manufactured using vertical continuous casting, resulting in the radius of the graphite grains being smaller. The stress-number of cycles curve (S-N curve) for the bending fatigue strength of the ADI spur gears thus manufactured, without any specific surface treatments, was obtained using post-processing software. It was observed that when the reliability was 50%, the allowable root stress was 610 MPa. was calculated using an analytical method as well as the finite element method, and the difference between the values calculated using the two methods is only 7%. This study provides a reliable basis to rate the reliability design of small gearboxes in automation in the future.

  • In the case of life prediction on the structures and machines after long service, it is natural to consider a degradation problems. Most of degradation data form practical structures are isolated data obtained at the time of periodical inspection or repair. From such data, it may be difficult to obtain the degradation curve available and necessary for life prediction. In this paper, for the purpose of obtaining a degradation curves, developed the simulate degradation method and fatigue test and Charpy impact test were conducted on the degraded, simulate degraded and recovered materials. Fatigue life prediction were conducted by using the relationship between fracture transition temperature (DBTT : vTrs) obtained from the Charpy impact test through the degradation process and fatigue crack growth constants of m and C obtained from the fatigue test.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of most steels change by heat treat treatment. Such variation of stucture and properties of steel cause an impedance change on electromagnetic induction coil. The objective of this study is, by searching the relationship between the mechanical property or microstructural changes and impedance value of induction coil, to examine the applicablity of a monitoring the heat treated condition of products nondestructively.

  • An automobile clutch diaphragm spring is operating in a closed clutch housing under high temperature and subject to high stress concentration in driving condition, which frequently causes cracks and fracture. The material of spring is required to possess sufficient fatigue strength and tenacity, which depend largely on the condition of tempering heat treatment. In this paper, specimens are made under a number of different tempering temperatures md tested to find the optimal tempering heat treatment condition. The experiments include the verification of microscopic structure, hardness, tensile strength, fatigue crack growth rate, stress intensity factor range and residual stress. Also, decarbonization, which occurs in actual heat treatment process, is measured and allowable decarbonization depth is studied by durability test.

  • The service life of tools in metal forming process is to a large extent limited by wear, fatigue fracture and plastic deformation. In warm forging processes wear is the predominant factor for operating lives of tools. To predict tool life by wear, Archard's wear model is generally applied. Usually hardness of die is considered to be a function of temperature in Archard's wear model. But hardness of die is a function of not only temperature but also operating time of die. To consider softening of die by repeated operations, it is necessary to express hardness of dies by a function of temperatures and operating time. By experiment of reheating of dies, die softening curves were obtained. Finally modified Archard's wear model in which hardness of die was expressed as a function of main tempering curve was proposed.

  • The tempering and magnetic annealing are used to improve the soft magnetic properties such as initial permeability coercivity and core loss of the KM35F alloy. The first heat treatmentis performed at the temperature less than the curie temperature of the KM35F alloy to remove the thermal stress for few hours in nitrogen atmosphere. The second stage heat treatment is performed the magnetic annealing at $500{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ for few hours in nitrogen atmosphere, and then quenching to room temperature in absence of oxygen. Finally, magnetic properties of the thermally treated KM35F alloy are investigated for application as a soft magnetic material of the ISO solenoid valve core and plunger.

  • The influence of mean strain on the behavior of early stage stress amplitude was investigated quantitatively in low cycle fatigue. It was obtained that the exponent of cyclic strain(n') and the coefficient of cyclic strain(C') decreased with increasing cycle numbers in compressive mean strain level. But it was the opposite in 0% mean strain and tensile mean strain level. And the cyclic yield strength ($\delta_(yc)$) was constant irrespective of mean strain or cyclic strain
