This study examined the effects of balance taping therapy on improving knee pain and the obstacles to daily activity in rural elderly women. The research design was a quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The data were collected from January 19th to April 14th, 2017. The research subjects included female elderly over 65 years old who visited 12 senior centers located at Y city in rural areas. The participants were composed of 26 people in the experimental group and 28 people in the control group. Data were collected before and 24 hours after balance taping therapy, and the pain and obstacles to daily activity were measured. The collected data were analyzed using the PASW Statistics 23 Program, which included a $X^2-test$, Shapiro-Wilk test, and Mann-Whitney U test. After the intervention, significant differences were observed in the knee pain (Z=-6.658, p<.001) and obstacles to daily activity (Z=-3.466, p=.001). With regard to lower domain variables of the obstacles to daily activity, significant differences in standing up (Z=-2.860, p=.004), daily activity (Z=-2.629, p=.009), walking (Z=-3.868, p<.001), and dressing up (Z=-2.049, p=.040) were observed between the two groups. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in grip (Z=-.542, p=.588) and arm stretching (Z=-.416, p=.678). In conclusion, applying balance taping to rural elderly women clearly decreases the level of knee pain, reduces the obstacles to daily activity, and improves their quality of life.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of a taping method on pain and ROM of the knee joint in the elderly. Method: The subjects were seniors registered in a senior welfare center in D city. An experimental group of 30 persons and acontrol group of 33 persons were chosen and according to the proper conditions and a knee pain score was marked from 1-5 on a Numerical Pain Rating Scale. For the experimental group, the taping method was conducted three times a week for four weeks (twelve times in all) but the control group did not receive taping.. The measuring instrument of knee pain was a numerical pain rating scale from 0 to 10 and the ROM score was the average value of three measured values with a goniometer. The data was analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 using an $x^2-test$, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and time contrast. Result: Knee joint pain was significantly decreased in the experimental group over that of the control group (p=.001). In addition, knee joint ROM of the experimental group was significantly improved over that of the control group (p=.001). Conclusion: It was proven that the taping method was effective for pain relief and increasing ROM of the knee joint in the elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of taping therapy on the range of motion and pain of shoulders, physical functions and depression among hospitalized patients with stroke a geriatric hospital. Methods: The study design was a none equivalent control group pre-post test quasi-experimental design. The participants were 25 patients for experimental group and 25 patients for the control group. The period of this study was from March to July 2010. The twenty minute taping therapy was performed for twice a week for eight weeks. Results: The results showed that taping therapy was effective in range of motion shoulders (flexion: t=-5.81, p =.001, abduction: t=-3.69, p =.001) and pain of shoulders (rest: t=3.18, p = .003, movement: t=2.97, p =.005), grip (t=-3.22, p =.002) and balance (t=3.20, p =.002), and depression (t=3.24, p =.002). The variable of ADL (t=-1.99, p =.052) was not significant. Conclusion: The results of the taping therapy increased range of motion shoulders and grip and balance of physical functions, and decreased pain in shoulders and depression. The findings support that taping therapy can be used as a nursing intervention for stroke patients in practical nursing and communities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Kynesio-taping therapy (KTT) on chronic joint pain among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A pre-experimental design was used. KTT was employed on 23 consenting community older adults visiting a community center. KTT was applied on the painful joint for 3-4 days. Pain was evaluated using the visual analogue scale. Results: Frequent locations of pain were waist (43.8%), knee (28.1%), shoulder (12.4%), and head (9.4%). Time of severe pain during the day was mid-day (47.8%), early morning (21.7%), and evening (13.0%). Pain relief management included hospital visitation (65.2%), medication (17.4%), and application of a poultice (13.0%). Pain scores were significantly decreased after KTT compared to pretest scores acquired prior to taping (p<.001). Conclusions: KTT is a cost-effective, easy-to-use, and effective form of pain relief in older adults with chronic joint pain. Clinical practitioners can consider KTT as a complementary method of chronic pain control in older adults.
The purpose of this study is introduce the spiral taping treatment on Temporomandibular Disorder in oral Medicine. The taping treatment is relatively simple and dosen't have any adverse effect, so it has high stability and superior effect of treatment. In this study, using the spiral taping treatment as one of the effective taping treatments, non-stretched tape was attatched to the muscles which set limit to the range of joint movement and cause pain to temporomandibular joint. With that treatment this study tried to make effective results of treatment of temporomandibular disorder. These results suggest spiral taping treatments contribute to the improvement of tempermandibular disorders. Further this study is needed for the confirmation of this effect of spiral taping treatments on temporomandibular disorders.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of balance taping therapy on neck pain in high school students. Methods: The study employed a randomized control group pretest-posttest design with four-time repeated measures. Data were collected from 62 high school students with neck pain. The experimental group (n=31) took balance taping therapy for six days with appropriate position and stretching education while the control group (n=31) applied patches including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for six days with appropriate position and stretching education. Neck pain, cervical range of motion (CROM) and neck disability were measured at pretest, day one, day three and day six which was the posttest day. Results: For the experimental group, the neck pain was significantly improved on all three days (F=16.82, p<.001), and extension and right lateral flexion of the CROMs were significantly improved over time compared to the control group (F=3.85, p =.011; F=2.71, p=.047, respectively). Neck disability was also improved in the experimental group compared to the control group (F=8.64, p<.001). Conclusion: The balance taping therapy was an efficient intervention for high school students with neck pain. Nurses could apply non-pharmacological interventions such as balance taping therapy without pharmacological side effects.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects of spiral taping treatment on low back pain. We evaluated the improvement by physical examination and pain. Results : 364 patients felt no pain or inconvenience of daily life and 43 patients showed improvement of pain or symptom after 1 month of treatment. 13 patients showed same pain with before treatment. Conclusion : These results suggest spiral taping treatments contribute to the improvement of low back pain. Further study is needed for the confirmation of this effect of spiral taping treatments on low back pain.
Purpose: This study was to figure out the effect of sacroiliac joints taping therapy on low back pain. Methods: 35 patients who visited to receive the treatments of the physical therapy in H orthopedic clinic in Kyoung-buk had been treated with spiral balance taping for 4weeks from 3 to 29, July 2006. They were divided 3 groups: acute, subacute, chronic. VAS(Visual Analogue Sacle) was analyzed for pain scale, and compared between the pre and post test among groups. Results: The acute patients' degree of the pain post therapy was decreased, the subacute patients' degree of the pain post therapy was decreased and the chronic patients' degree of the pain post therapy was decreased. There were statistically remarkable differences(p<0.05) in 3 groups. Conclusion: This results suggest that sacroiliac joints taping therapy to correct leg length inequality was effective on low back pain.
Pain is the most common symptom that brings a patient to the hospital. Repetitious stress and sprain injury result in various pains, and so we tried to improve cervical movement and release from pain by using taping technique of actual agonists and postural muscles in addition to psychological relaxation. The 4 patient with neck problems were applied Arikawa taping approaches. The flexor or extensor patterns were determined by Arikawa method at first. if the symptoms and patterns were similar, the taping was attached same point. After taping on major muscles of causing neck pain levator scapula, scalenus medius, sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis, semispinalis capitis. - we found neck pain released and cervical ROM increased. In conclusion, we determined cervical movement related to rotation of splenius capitis, extention of semispinalis capitis, levator scapula, flexion and rotation of scalenus medius.
