  • An ultrasonic signal processing algorithm was developed for extracting the information of cracks generated around the keyway of a turbine rotor disk. B-scan images were obtained by using keyway specimens and an ultrasonic scan system with x-y position controller. The B-scan images were used as input images for 2-Dimensional signal processing, and the algorithm was constructed with four processing stages of pre-processing, crack candidate region detection, crack region classification and crack information extraction. It is confirmed by experiments that the developed algorithm is effective for the quantitative evaluation of cracks generated around the keyway of turbine rotor disk.

  • A design process and an axisymmetric boundary integral equation method for precise structural analysis of the aircraft gas turbine rotor disk were developed. This axisymmetric boundary integral equation method for stress and steady-state thermal analysis was improved in solution accuracy by appling an implicit technique for Cauchy principal value evaluation, a subelement technique for weak singular integral evaluation and a double exponentical integral technoque for internal point solution near boundary surfaces. Stresses, temperatures, low cycle fatigue lifes and critical speeds for the turbine rotor disk of the thrust 1421 N class turbojet engine were analysed in a pratical calculation model problem.

  • One of the main goal of gas turbine rim seal research is to prevent thermal damage at rotor-stator disk by preventing hot gas of main flow in turbine passage. To increase sealing performance, several studies related to the improvement of rim seal configuration have been conducted. In addition, research based on actual operating condition is needed in order to apply effective turbine rim seal configuration. In this study, numerical simulation was conducted with variation of rotor rim seal thickness. Radial and axial expansion cases were tested numerically in this study. As a result, the cases showed different pressure distribution, sealing performance and flow characteristics according to the amount of secondary flow.

  • This paper presents aerodynamic power outputs of wind turbine of 6 MW wind farm composed of 3 sets of 2 MW wind turbine according to the separation distance by using CFD. Layout design including offshore wind farm and onshore wind farm is key factor for the initial investment cost, annual energy production and maintenance cost. For each wind turbine rotor, not actuator disc model with momentum source but full 3-dimensional model is used for CFD and it has a great technical meaning. The results of this study can be applied to the offshore wind farm layout design effectively.

  • A steam turbine blade is one of the core parts in a power plant. It transforms steam energy into mechanical energy. It is installed on the rim of a rotor disk. Many failure cases have been reported at the final stage blades of a low-pressure (LP) turbine that is cyclically loaded by centrifugal force because of the repeated startups of the turbine. Therefore, to ensure the safety of an LP steam turbine blade, it is necessary to investigate the fatigue strength and life. In this study, the low cycle fatigue life of an LP steam turbine blade is evaluated based on actual damage analysis. To determine the crack initiation life of the final stage of a steam turbine, Neuber's rule is applied to elastic stresses by the finite element method to calculate the true strain amplitude. It is observed that the expected life and actual number of starts/stops of the blade were well matched.

  • The long-term research and development for the production of domestic blades has been consistently performed. As the direct and indirect results of its nationwide technologies in precision casting have been improved as well as maintenance costs for turbine machinery has been reduced. Whereas, there are still not a few concerns about the reliability of newly manufactured blades in spite of the quality certificate in metallurgical and mechanical properties. A spin tester is a machine that gives centrifugal loading to a rotating part, and its practical application is the overspeed test that is usually used to check the quality of products. A new spin rig has been constructed in KEPCO Research Institute for the purpose of evaluating the reliability of blades. In this paper, the test methodology for low cycle fatigue damage mechanism as well as the overspeed test for newly developed blades is described, and their reliability is evaluated too.
