During the construction period of submarine shield tunnel, which is built firstly in very soft marine clay layer 40m deep in Korea, wide range problems were encountered such as safe launching against high earth pressure at shield entrance, technique of shield face pressure control when passing through complex multi-layered soils This paper introduces successful construction practice through development of state-of-the-art construction method and field monitoring.
The study area is located in Hyeonseo-myeon and Andeok-myeon of Cheongsong-gun, Korea around the Yeongcheon dam waterway tunnel, and in this paper, it is analyzed whether the groundwater level is recovered or not compared to groundwater level before waterway tunnel construction by measuring the groundwater level of 156 wells which were installed in areas near and away from the waterway tunnel. From September 2017 to August 2018, the groundwater level of the well was measured at least once a month, and as a result of groundwater level observation survey, the groundwater level of wells distributed in the directly affected zone by the waterway tunnel is relatively lower than that of the indirectly affected zone apart from the waterway tunnel. These results are estimated to be predominantly affected by the effect of waterway tunnel acting on geologic discontinuities rather than by terrain conditions, i.e. groundwater flows being leaked to the waterway tunnel through direct or indirect channels. Continuous monitoring and further investigation will be required to maintain groundwater facilities and preserve groundwater environments in the future.

Currently, in Korea, large-scale, deep excavations are being carried out adjacent to structures due to overcrowding in urban areas. for adjacent excavations in urban areas, it is very important to ensure the safety of earth retaining structures and underground structures. accordingly, an automated measurement system is being introduced to manage the safety of subway tunnel structures. however, the utilization of automated measurement system results is very low. existing evaluation techniques rely only on the maximum value of measured data, which can overestimate abnormal behavior. accordingly, in this study, a vast amount of automated measurement data was analyzed using the Gaussian probability density function, a technique that can quantitatively evaluate. highly reliable results were derived by applying probabilistic statistical analysis methods to a vast amount of data. therefore, in this study, the safety evaluation of subway tunnel structures due to adjacent excavation work was performed using a technique that can process a large amount of data.
In this study, the behavior and safety of an existing tunnel and its facilities are investigated when a new tunnel adjacent to the existing tunnel is blasted. The design of the new tunnel puts priority on stability of the tunnel itself over the safety of the facilities which are installed within the existing tunnel such as jet fans. And thus, a detailed consideration on securing the safety of the existing facilities has been insufficient. An analysis on the types of traffic accidents in the last ten years shows that most incidents were due to the driver's improper response in emergency situations and unexpected obstacles. In consideration of this analysis, the safety of the facilities in the existing tunnel was secured by minimizing the charging amount for each hangfire and changing the excavation method of evacuation communication shelters to the large center hole cut blasting method to reduce blasting vibration. For a more quantitative analysis, measurement devices were installed inside the existing tunnel, at houses adjacent to the new tunnel, near jet fans in the existing tunnel. This enabled real time measurement of displacements of the existing tunnel, adjacent houses, and jet fans without interrupting traffic flow. Therefore, the improvements of charging amount for each hangfire, the blasting method, and the measurement method are suggested in this paper to secure the safety of the facilities in the existing tunnel when a new tunnel, located on a large city and adjacent to an existing tunnel, is designed.

This study investigated the possible use of vibration from polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film to enhance the performance of the deteriorated tunnel drainage due to physical/chemical clogging of the fine particles through a series of laboratory experiments. The test program was consisted of two different experiments, fundamental investigation and drainage model test. In the fundamental investigation, flow of clay slurry mixed with 50% water (freshwater and brine) on PVDF film with various frequencies was examined. In the model tests, slurry clogging to the woven fiber attached to drainage pipe and its reduction by vibration was investigated. Results of the experiment show that vibration from PVDF film enhances the drain performance significantly. Based upon the investigation, it gives an essential data that are needed for a potential use of hybrid drainage system with PVDF.

As spreading of train concrete ballast leads to the increase resounding friction noise, an porous sound absorbing block is applied in urban train tunnel as a counterparts against the friction noise. Three steps of major variables tests for an optimal mix design of the block are conducted to pursue the light weight of the block. Pilot property tests of the block for the cases of the fly-ash only as lightweight aggregates are carried satisfying KRT(Korean Rail Transit) and new KRS(Korean Railway Standards). Based on the results of pilot tests, required structural strength and admixture effects are evaluated. Additionally, typical lightweight aggregates are replaced so that lightweight and strength are improved for serviceability of poor working conditions and proper maintenance in urban train tunnel.
This report is intended to be used as a reference in the project being conducted by MIRECO for preventing ground subsidence in mining district. For this purpose, the procedure of the project for preventing ground subsidence mining district was described and cases of design, construction, and study were introduced.

Overall risks that can occur in a shield TBM tunnelling are studied in this paper. Both the potential risk events that may occur during tunnel construction and their causes are identified, and the causal relationship between causes and events is obtained in a systematic way. Risk impact analysis is performed for the potential risk events and ways to mitigate the risks are summarized. Literature surveys as well as interviews with experts were made for this purpose. The potential risk events are classified into eight categories: cuttability reduction, collapse of a tunnel face, ground surface settlement and upheaval, spurts of slurry on the ground, incapability of mucking and excavation, and water leakage. The causes of these risks are categorized into three areas: geological, design and construction management factors. Bayesian Networks (BN) were established to systematically assess a causal relationship between causes and events. The risk impact analysis was performed to evaluate a risk response level by adopting an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with the consideration of the downtime and cost of measures. Based on the result of the risk impact analysis, the risk events are divided into four risk response levels and these levels are verified by comparing with the actual occurrences of risk events. Measures to mitigate the potential risk events during the design and/or construction stages are also proposed. Result of this research will be of the help to the designers and contractors of TBM tunnelling projects in identifying the potential risks and for preparing a systematic risk management through the evaluation of the risk response level and the migration methods in the design and construction stage.

This study aims to numerically investigate ground movement around a square steel pipe as well as a group of square steel pipes induced by its and their ground penetration for trenchless construction of a concrete box. From numerical results, ground movement induced by a square steel pipe is much more dominantly governed by vertical displacement rather than horizontal displacement. Ground settlement induced by pipe penetration is much larger as the overburden becomes lower. The settlement is also shown to be slightly dependent upon the sequence of pipe penetration. More careful construction management is highly in demand during the penetration of upper pipes since their induced settlement occupies approximately 75 percent of total ground settlement after the whole construction of steel pipes.

This study investigated the occurrences, causes, and mitigation of the recent ground subsidence and underground cavity generation events in Korea. Two main causes of ground subsidence are (1) the soil erosion by seepage during tunneling and earth excavation and (2) the damage of underground pipes. The main cause of the soil erosion during tunneling was the uncontrolled groundwater flow. Especially, when excavating soft grounds using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), the ground near TBM operation halt points were found to be the most vulnerable to failure. The damage of underground pipes was mainly caused by poor construction, material deterioration, and differential settlement in soft soils. The ground subsidence during tunneling and earth excavation can be managed by monitoring the outflow of groundwater and eroded soils in construction sites. It is expected that the ground subsidence by the underground pipe damage can be managed or mitigated by life cycle analysis and maintenance of the buried pipes, and by controlling the earth pressure distribution or increasing the bearing capacity at the upper ground of the buried pipes.
