  • This study presents the analysis of flow and bed change characteristics considering bed protection work built on the immediate downstream of weir to protect river bed from scouring. The study area is 37km reach from Hyunpoong station to Masuwon station including Hapcheon- Changryoung multi-function weir in the Nakdong river. CCHE2D model is calibrated and validated for evaluating the flow and bed change characteristics during Typhoon Kompasu in 2010. Three simulation conditions are set up: Case 1 is a natural channel without installation of weir. Case 2 involves an installation of weir in the natural channel. Case 3 involves an installation of weir with bed protection in the natural channel. Flood frequency (50, 100 and 200yr) is applied to each scenario to analyze the effects of bed protection work. While the sediment rate is increased in the downstream of fixed gate and sluice-type gate, river bed scouring rate is increased in the downstream of lift-type gate in Case 2 comparing with the results of Case 1. The river bed scouring is not occurred in the immediate downstream of weir (~30m) due to the effect of bed protection, but larger amount of sediment is occurred in the downstream of weir (60m~) which the bed protection is not installed comparing with the results Case 1. Through the results of simulation considering bed protection work, this study would be helpful to expect bed change and operate the weir as well as manage.

  • In recent, the series of extreme storm events were occurred by those continuous typhoons and the severe flood damages due to the loss of life and the destruction of property were involved. In this study, we call Mega flood for the Extreme flood occurred by these successive storm events and so we can have a hypothetical Mega flood by assuming that a extreme event can be successively occurred with a certain time interval. Inter Event Time Definition (IETD) method was used to determine the time interval between continuous events in order to simulate Mega flood. Therefore, the continuous extreme rainfall events are determined with IETD then Mega flood is simulated by the consecutive events : (1) consecutive occurrence of two historical extreme events, (2) consecutive occurrence of two design events obtained by the frequency analysis based on the historical data. We have shown that Mega floods by continuous extreme rainfall events were increased by 6-17% when we compared to typical flood by a single event. We can expect that flood damage caused by Mega flood leads to much greater than damage driven by a single rainfall event. The second increase in the flood caused by heavy rain is not much compared to the first flood caused by heavy rain. But Continuous heavy rain brings the two times of flood damage. Therefore, flood damage caused by the virtual Mega flood of is judged to be very large. Here we used the hypothetical rainfall events which can occur Mega floods and this could be used for preparing for unexpected flood disaster by simulating Mega floods defined in this study.

  • Recently, the intensity and frequency of floods has increasing worldwide, and flood disasters have become a big problem. Flood disasters, which account for the largest portion of disasters, are floods accompanied by typhoons and localized heavy rainfall. As a result, they cause damage of levee overtopping, in which the water level of a river rises to the levee crown. Therefore, countermeasures are essential and necessary because of the damage to the facility itself as well as to life and other property. The damage magnitude depends on the collapse of the levee. A levee that is difficult to collapse will reduce the discharge inland significantly. Accordingly, the protection of the inland slope, where the collapse of the levee is initiated, is one of the most important countermeasures In this study, revetments with various porosity and forms were suggested and hydraulic experiments were carried out for each type. The hydraulic experiments showed that the stability of a revetment in an inland slope is strongly correlated with the weight per unit area of the revetment. The relationship between the critical velocity, which is the velocity at the moment of leaving the revetment, and the weight per unit area was derived. Through this study, by applying the nature friendly revetment, which has not yet been applied to Korea, it is expected that life and property damage caused by levee overtopping during flooding can be reduced, and a nature friendly river space can be constructed.

  • Recently, concerns about natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons have increased. As the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increase, research is needed to prevent structures from collapsing due to earthquake loads. Research is needed to increase the ductility of columns to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, the ductility improvement of square columns achieved by applying spiral stirrups to square columns. Square columns reinforced with spiral stirrups are more resistant to repetitive loads such as seismic loads than columns reinforced with tie stirrups. Also, the spiral stirrups can apply better confinement to the concrete. In this study, an uniaxial compression test was conducted to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with spiral stirrups. The results showed that the columns reinforced with spiral stirrups in both the circular and square columns showed higher compressive strength than the columns reinforced with the tie stirrups. In addition, the columns reinforced with spiral stirrups for both the square and circle columns, showed a tendency to endure the load even after the initial cracking and rebar yielding.

  • Daecheong Reservoir was made by the construction of a large dam (>15 m in height) on the middle to downstream of the Geum River and the discharge systems have the watergate-spillway (WS), a hydropower penstock (HPP), and two intake towers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the limnological anomalies of turbid water reduction, green algae phenomenon, and oligotrophic state in the lower part of reservoir dam site, and compared with hydro-meteorological factors. Field surveys were conducted in two stations of near dam and the outlet of HPP with one week intervals from January to December 2000. Rainfall was closely related to the fluctuations of inflow, outflow and water level. The rainfall pattern was depended on the storm of monsoon and typhoon, and the increase of discharge and turbidity responded more strongly to the intensity than the frequency. Water temperature and DO fluctuations within the reservoir water layer were influenced by meteorological and hydrological events, and these were mainly caused by water level fluctuation based on temperature stratification, density current and discharge types. The discharges of WS and HPP induced to the flow of water bodies and the outflows of turbid water and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively. Especially, when hypoxic or low-oxygen condition was present in the bottom water, the discharge through HPP has contributed significantly to the outflow of phosphorus released from the sediment into the downstream of dam. In addition, HPP effluent which be continuously operated throughout the year, was the main factor that could change to a low trophic level in the downreservoir (lacustrine zone). And water-bloom (green-tide) occurring in the lower part of reservoir was the result that the water body of upreservoir being transported and diffused toward the downreseroir, when discharging through the WS. Finally, the hydropower effluent was included the importance and dynamics that could have a temporal and spatial impacts on the physical, chemical and biological factors of the reservoir ecosystem.

  • The advancement of dam operation is further required due to the upcoming rainy season, typhoons, or torrential rains. Besides, physical models based on specific rules may sometimes have limitations in controlling the release discharge of dam due to inherent uncertainty and complex factors. This study aims to forecast the water level of the nearest station to the dam multi-timestep-ahead and evaluate the availability when it makes a decision for a release discharge of dam based on LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) of deep learning. The LSTM model was trained and tested on eight data sets with a 1-hour temporal resolution, including primary data used in the dam operation and downstream water level station data about 13 years (2009~2021). The trained model forecasted the water level time series divided by the six lead times: 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18-hours, and compared and analyzed with the observed data. As a result, the prediction results of the 1-hour ahead exhibited the best performance for all cases with an average accuracy of MAE of 0.01m, RMSE of 0.015 m, and NSE of 0.99, respectively. In addition, as the lead time increases, the predictive performance of the model tends to decrease slightly. The model may similarly estimate and reliably predicts the temporal pattern of the observed water level. Thus, it is judged that the LSTM model could produce predictive data by extracting the characteristics of complex hydrological non-linear data and can be used to determine the amount of release discharge from the dam when simulating the operation of the dam.
