  • This experiment was mainly performed with a biological treatment of laser printed paper using enzyme, We got the following conclusions : In the case of nonionic surfactant treatment, brightness, residual ink contents and several strength properties of deinked paper were excellent at the low dosage of cellulase 0.05%. When mixed cellulase and xylanase was used, yield was increased as the dosage increased up to 0.2%, but brightness was decreased at the same condition. In contrast, deinking efficiency of anionic type was reduced in terms of brightness, residual ink contents, and tensile strength. As flotation time was increased, yield decreased and brightness increased slightly. On the other hand, the addition of surfactant during repulping process showed better result than that during flotation process.

  • Flotation deinking is a common practice for removing ink from recovered paper, and it is becoming a key process in many recycling paper mills. Flotation deinking was successfully introduced to the paper recycling industry in the 1980s, and its applications in wax removal, stickies control, and fiber fractionation have attracted great research interest. A successful flotation process has three major efficient subprocesses: the detachment of the ink particles from the fibers, the effective adhesion of the ink particles onto air bubble surfaces, and the removal of froth and ink particles from flotation cells. Surfactants can affect these subprocesses either positively or negatively. To understand how a surfactant can positively and negatively affect the flotation deinking process, the basic chemistry of surfactant in solution should be discussed.

  • The useful fungi which secret extracellular enzymes was selected for deinking agent of old newsprint. Five fungal strains were isolated from a paper mill soil ground. The CMCase, FPase and xylanase activities of fungi on the liquid culture were investigated at optimal growth conditions. The results of this study were as follow: The optimal pH and temperature for culture growth were 4~8 and 27~$35^{\circ}C$, respectively. For screening of extracellular enzymes at optimal culture conditions the optimal culture period were less than 6-7 days. Fusarium pallidoroseum and Aspergiilus niger which shows relatively higher CMCase, FPase and xylanase activities than the other species were selected for further enzymatic deinking research.

  • Although many researches have been made on the adsorption of cationic starches onto chemical pulp fibers, only limited studies have been reported for deinked pulp(DIP) and thermomechanical pulpI(TMP). In this experiment, the adsorption behavior of the cationic starches onto DIP and TMP fibers investigated. Almost complete adsorption of cationic starches onto the pulp fibers were observed when the addition rate of starch was low. Adsorption ratio decreased abruptly when 3.5% and 4.0% of cationic starches were adsorbed onto deinked pulp and thermomechanical pulp, respectively. Adsorption of cationic starches increased as the degree of substitution decreased and as the pH of the pulp slurry increased. TMP fibers adsorbed more cationic starches than DIP because of its greater charge density, and this led to greater improvement in strength properties for the TMP sheets.

  • The pilot scale ultrasonic deinking was carried out in order to confirm the commercialization possibility of ultrasonic deinking. White ledger was used as a raw material and the results were compared to the results obtained from the conventional deinking. The fraction of smaller ink particle was increased and the improved ink removal efficiency was also obtained by the ultrasonic treatment. The brightness and breaking length of ultrasonic deinked pulp were superior to those of the conventional deinked pulp. Most interesting findings in this study were that the significant improvement in effluent quality and the reduction of chemicals and energy cost were obtained by the ultrasonic deinking.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the enzymatic deinking technology. Office recycled papers such as computer printed out(CPO) and white ledger(WL) were used in the evaluation of four different deinking conditions ; alkaline deinking , neutral deinking and enzymatic deinking at alkaline and neutral pH. Filltering pads were prepared after flotation deinking to measure brighteness gain and ink removal efficiency. Three different surfactants were also used in the evaluation of deinking efficiency including surface chemical properties by measuring foam height and stability, surface tension and cloud point of views. The results indicated that the neutral deinking method with enzyme and surfactant addition showed highest deinking efficiency of office recycled papers.

  • Toner particles used in laser and xerographic printing process is fused on paper surface so strongly that they tend not to detach easily from the recylced paper surface during pulping. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of detached toner particles by conventional screening and flotation process has limitation due to the platy shape and large size of detached toner particles. It has been shown that the removal efficiency of toners in the screening process can be increased by agglomerating the toner particles with fatty alcohol. It is not possible, however, to remove small and platy toner particles by screening process. These small and platy toner particles should be removed by flotation process. In this study the effect of fatty alcohol that used for toner agglomeration on flotation efficiency has been examined. It was shown that flotation efficiency decreased when fatty alcohol was used most probably due to its effect of reducing hydrophobicity of toner particles.

  • This experiment was mainly performed with a mechanical treatment using ultrasound. We got the following conclusions : At seven minutes-ultrasonic treatment using nonionic surfactant, yield, brightness and residual ink contents were superior to other treatment, but several strength properties were decreased. On the other hand anionic surfactant was considerably low ink removal efficiency. For ultrasonic treatment using nonionic surfactant, yield and brightness were dropped when temperature was over 4$0^{\circ}C$, but were observed to be insensitive to the pulp consistency and flotation time. In the case of nonionic surfactant, tensile and burst strength were improved when ultrasonic treatment was used comparing to non-treatment, and nonionic surfactant was generally better than anionic surfactant in terms of tensile and burst strength regardless of ultrasound conditions. Several properties were decreased when anionic surfactant was used in comparison with nonionic surfactant except yield, therefore, anionic surfactant. was not proper to be used in this condition.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The utilization of wastepaper as a papermaking raw material is everlastingly required for the environmental protection of earth. However the recycling of wastepaper for this purpose cause another problem such as the increasing of the load of wastewater treatment, lower strength properties of paper, and poor printability, etc. The interest in the development of the environmentally friendly deinking technology is increased continuously. Thus, our research team have tried to apply the ozone to the deinking of white ledger and ONP, and obtained the positive results which can be considered as an alternative method for the conventional deinking method. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of ozone deinking. Styrene acrylate and polystyrene were treated with ozone and measured the change of molecular weight with the GPC. The molecular weight distribution obtained with GPC showed only slight increase by the ozone treatment, and gel formation by the polymerization was observed. Therefore the removal of ink particles with ozone treatment seems to be facilitated by the increase of the brittleness and decrease of adhesive property.
