  • 폐 플라스틱은 석유 물질인 탄화수소로 구성하고 있지만 효과적으로 재활용되지 못하고 대부분 매립, 소각 등의 방법으로 처리하고 있다. 플라스틱은 다양한 용도로 사용되기 때문에 플라스틱의 이용과 소비의 증가는 필연적이다. 예로 미국 가정의 폐 플라스틱은 63% 폴리에틸렌, 11% 폴리프로필렌, 11% 폴리스타이렌, 7% PET 그리고 7% PVC가 발생되는데 이들 화합물 구조가 포화탄화수소형이기 때문에 70% 정도가 방향족 화합물인 석탄에 비해 수소첨가 반응이 요구되지 않는다.(중략)

Characterization of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Degradation by a Sphingomonas sp. 3Y Isolated from a Diesel-Contaminated Site. (디젤오염지역에서 분리한 세균 Sphingomonas sp. 3Y의 석유계 탄화수소분해특성)

  • Bacterial stain 3Y was isolated from a site that was contaminated with diesel for more than 15 years. The strain could grow on various petroleum using hydrocarbons as the sole carbon source. The strain grew not only on aliphatic hydrocarbons but also on aromatic hydrocarbons. 3Y grew on aliphatic petroleum hydrocarbons hexane or hexadecane, and aromatic petroleum hydrocarbons BTEX, phenol, biphenyl, or phenanthrene. The strain showed aromatic ring dioxygenase and meta-cleavage dioxygenase activities as determined by tests using indole and catechol. Aromatic ring dioxygenase is involved in the initial step of biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbons while meta-cleavage dioxygenase catalyzes the cleavage of the benzene ring. Based on a nucleotide sequence analysis of its 16S rRNA gene, 3Y belongs to the genus Sphingomonas. A phylogenetic tress was constructed based on the nucleotide sequences of closest relatives of 3Y and petroleum hydrocarbon degrading sphingomonads. 3Y was in a cluster that was different from the cluster that contained well-known sphingomonads. The results of this study suggest that 3Y has the potential to cleanup oil-contaminated sites. Further investigation is warranted to optimize conditions to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons by the strain to develop a better bioremediation strategy.

마이크로웨이브 플라즈마를 이용한 이산화탄소 분해

  • 지구상에 존재하는 모든 생물에 의해 배출되는 이산화탄소는 온실가스로써 산업혁명 이후 급격한 농도 증가로 인해 지구 온난화 등의 다양한 환경문제를 초래하고 있다. 지구 온난화의 가시화로 인한 각종 기후 협약 및 탄소배출권 등에 규제로 온실가스 감축의무부과가 확실해져 탈 석유기반 사회로 전환을 위한 이산화탄소를 처리하는 다양한 연구가 각국에서 활발히 진행 중이다. 본 연구에서 마이크로웨이브 플라즈마 토치를 이산화탄소 분해에 이용하게 되었고 그 목적은 이산화탄소가스를 마이크로웨이브로 가열하여 순수한 이산화탄소 플라즈마 토치를 발생함으로서 지구 온난화의 주범인 이산화탄소를 생산적으로 이용하기 위한 것으로 전자파를 발진하는 마그네트론으로는 3kW, 2.45GHz의 주파수를 사용한다. 마이크로웨이브 플라즈마 토치를 이용한 이산화탄소의 분해 시 생성되는 물질을 확인하기 위하여 이산화탄소의 열역학적 평형을 계산하였으며 또한 이산화탄소의 분해 반응의 준 평형상태에서의 속도상수를 이용하여 각 분해반응생성물들의 밀도비율을 계산하였고, 이를 일반화시켜 도시하였다. 위 과정을 통해 고온의 이산화탄소 토치는 탄화수소 연료를 1기압에서 개질할 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 예를 들어 메탄개질은 $CO_2+CH_4{\rightarrow}2CO+2H_2$의 반응식이 된다. 이때 엔탈피와 엔트로피 변화는 각 각 ${\Delta}H=247kJ/mole$${\Delta}S=257J/mole/deg.$이며 이 반응에 대한 gibbs 자유에너지는 $G={\Delta}H-T{\Delta}S$로서 개질 자발반응이 일어나는 온도는 $T={\Delta}H/{\Delta}S=961K$가 된다. 그리고 탄화수소 개질에 참여하는 산소와 CO 라디칼의 밀도가 대단히 높다. 따라서 메탄개질은 이산화탄소 토치를 통하여 1기압에서 쉽게 이루어진다.

Anaerobic Degradation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Soil by Application of a Digestion Sludge (소화슬러지를 이용한 토양 내 석유계 탄화수소의 혐기성 분해)

  • Anaerobic degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in a soil artificially contaminated with 10,000 mg/kg soil of diesel fuel was tested by adding an anaerobic sludge taken from a sludge digestion tank. Treatments of soil(50 g) with 15 mL/kg soil and 30 mL/kg soil of the digestion sludge(2,000 mg/L of vss(volatile suspended solids)) showed 37.2% and 58.0% of total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH) removal during 90 days incubation, respectively. In evaluation of several anaerobic conditions including nitrate reducing, sulfate reducing, methanogenic, and mixed electron accepters condition, treatments with the digested sludge showed significant degradation of diesel fuel under all anaerobic conditions compare to a control treatment of soil without the sludge and a treatment of autoclaved soil treatment with autoclaved digestion sludge. The rate of diesel fuel degradation was the highest in the treatment with the sludge and mixed electron accepters (75% removal of TPH) for 120 days incubation followed in order by sulfate reducing, nitrate reducing, methanogenic condition as 67%, 53%, 43%, respectively. However, the removal rate of non-biodegradable isoprenoid was the highest in the sulfate reducing condition. These results suggest that anaerobic degradation of diesel fuel in soil with digested sludge is effective for practical remediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.

Solubilization of Hydrocarbon Oils by C12E8 Nonionic Surfactant Solution (C12E8 비이온 계면활성제 수용액에 의한 탄화수소 오일의 가용화에 관한 연구)

  • The equilibrium solubilization capacity of pure hydrocarbon oils by 2.5 wt% $C_{12}E_8$ nonionic surfactant solution was measured at $30^{\circ}C$ by gas chromatography (GC) analysis. Experimental results indicated that the molar solubilization ratio (MSR) for pure alkanes was found to decrease almost linearly with the alkane carbon number (ACN) of the hydrocarbon oil. For the binary mixture systems of the hydrocarbon oils both selective and nonselective solubilization behaviors were observed depending on the difference in carbon number of the two hydrocarbon oils. Equilibrium solubilization tests for the two n-octane/n-nonane and n-nonane/n-decane mixture systems in $C_{12}E_8$ surfactant solutions suggest slightly selective solubilization in favor of n-octane, but the small difference in solubilization rates between two hydrocarbon oils does not allow ruling out non-selective solubilization for these particular systems. This is certainly not the case for the n-octane/n-decane mixture, for which selective solubilization was conclusively demonstrated by GC analysis data.

Effect of Environmental Parameters on the Degradation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Soil (환경인자가 토양내 석유계탄화수소의 분해에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to Investigate the effect of environmental conditions on the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH) in soil. The soil used for this study was sandy loam. Target contaminant, diesel oil, was spiked at 10.000mgTPH/kg dry soil. Moisture content was controlled to 50%, 70%, and 90% of field capacity of the soil. Temperature was controlled to $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$. The active degradation of TPH was observed at the moisture contents of 50% and 70% of field capacity, and temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$. Degradation rate of n-alkanes was about two times greater than that of TPH. Volatilization loss of TPH was about 2% of initial concentration. Biocide control and no aeration experiments indicated that removal of TPH was primarily occurred by biodegradation under aerobic condition.

  • Oil spilled in seawater undergoes physical and chemical changes as well as biological degradation through various weathering processes, such as evaporation, diffusion, dispersion, emulsification, dissolution, oxidation, and sedimentation. Evaporation is one of the most immediate and prompt weathering processes, and it has the greatest influence on majority of pollutants. In this study, the evaporation characteristics of different oil samples were studied; the volatilization characteristics of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel were compared at average seawater (25 ℃) and near-equator (35 ℃) temperatures. The oil samples were pre-treated and then collected at regular intervals. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis was performed, and the changes in the amount of the hydrocarbons were calculated.

  • In this study, we researched Ni-based bead catalysts for the catalytic thermal decomposition of light hydrocarbons. A Ni-based bead-type catalyst was prepared, and catalytic thermal decomposition performance of light hydrocarbons was evaluated. The 30Ni/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited the most superior performance, with the presence of both fibrous and carbon black forms on the catalyst surface. Catalytic performance was evaluated for particles sized between 150-250 and 500 ㎛, with excellent catalytic thermal decomposition properties in the 150-250 ㎛ range. After the reaction, carbon removal through collision between catalysts in the fluidized bed was observed. It was confirmed that as the particle size increases, the amount of carbon removed increases.

Diesel Combustion Strategies Effect on Exhaust Emissions and Hydrocarbon Species (디젤 연소 전략에 따른 배기가스 및 탄화수소 종 분석)

  • This study investigates the effect of diesel combustion strategies on exhaust emissions and hydrocarbon species emissions for a 1.7 L common rail direct injection diesel engine at 1500 rpm and 3.9 bar BMEP. The first strategy is a method to adopt no EGR with a split injection composed of pilot and main injection (split injection). The second is to adopt a moderate EGR rate with main injection only (single-1). The third is to use a high level of EGR and main injection with rail pressure increase, $i.e.$ low-temperature diesel combustion (single-2). Split injection and single-1 showed a renowned phenomenon of a PM-NOx trade-off, whereas single-2 was observed of a PM-NOx trade-off to reduce PM and NOx simultaneously. HC speciation results show that the split injection produced the least amount of HC species, regardless of the carbon number bin, followed by single-1 and single-2. The ratios of methane, acetylene, and CO to THC increased as a combustion A/F ratio is richer due to reduced oxygen content in the vicinity of the combustion zone, thus enhancing pyrolysis.

Analysis on the contamination and source of VOCs in groundwaters of Gwangju area (광주광역시의 지하수 중 휘발성유기화합물(VOCs)의 오염과 오염원 분석)

  • VOCs were detected in the 21 groundwaters out of 37 groundwaters sampled from around the Hanam Industrial Complex and the Gwangju stream. Ten components of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 18 groundwater samples. Among them, total trihalomethanes (TTHM) concentration is in the range of $0.1~36.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, CECs concentration is $2.3~190{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, and chlorinated solvents concentration containing PCE, TCE, etc. is $0.1~124.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$ respectively. Ten components of the aromatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 5 groundwater samples, but their concentration are less than $1{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$. Detection frequency and concentration of the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons components from the groundwaters in the Hanam Industrial Complex are higher than those of nearby downtown Gwangju stream. VOCs components except for TCE are lower than the MCL of USGS drinking water standard. TCE concentration of the 2 groundwater samples is over MCL, whose concentrations are 5 and 25 times higher than MCL, respectively. TCE is detected from the H8 and H10 groundwater samples and CFCs is detected H8 and H11 groundwater samples in the Hanam Industrial Complex. TTHM in study area is estimated from leakage of the main waters or sewage waters. Because most of the studied groundwater is under an aerobic condition, aromatic hydrocarbons are well degraded. But chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are degraded very slowly.
