The profile of the roller in the axial direction is the main design factor in order to increase endurance life against the contact fatigue due to the stress concentration along the edge of the roller. Even under the elas-tohydrodynamic lubrication (ehl) conditions, the stress concentration along the edge of the roller greatly worsens the fatigue life both for the roller and contacting body. In this study, roller contacts of finite axial length are studied for the film thickness and pressure of ehl. For the real contact behaviors under the ehl conditions, multigrid and multi-level method is applied so that much higher loading conditions can be investigated. Several axial profiles of roller are investigated to verify how both ehl film and pressure are generated and some of them are recommended for the ehl contact condition.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the effects of surface roughness by comparing the elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL) analysis of smooth surface and rough surface as the ball bearing. In order to do this, The average flow model is adapted for the interaction of the flow rheology of lubricant and surface roughness. The average Reynolds equation and the related flow factor which describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology, the viscosity-pressure and density-pressure relations equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation are solved simultaneously. The results show that effects of surface roughness on the film thickness and pressre distribution should be considered especially in EHL contact problems.
This dissertation analyzes the running mechanism of flexible and thin tape above rotating head through the numerical simulation and the experiment. The scope of analysis is confined to the phenomena of two dimensional elasto hydrodynamic lubrication between the protruded bump on a rotating cylinder and the running tape. This model is based on the elastic deformation equation of plate and shell and Reynolds equation. Finite difference method is employed as a numerical technique to calculate (1) the distribution of pressure between the running tape and rotating bump and (2) the vertical deformation of elastic thin tape over he rotating bump under hydrodynamic pressure. In numerical analyses, the effects of bump size on flying characteristics of the tape were evaluated and examined considering the influence of tension and stiffness of tape.
The electric controlled marine diesel engine has fuel pump generating the high pressurized fuel for fuel injection to combustion chamber via a common rail. Fuel pump consists of a cam-roller system. Journal bearing installed between a roller and a cam-roller pin is subjected to fluctuating heavy and instant loads by cam lift. First, Kinematic analysis is carried out to predict bearing loads during one cycle acting on the journal bearing. Second, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis and transient elasto-hydrodynamic(EHD) lubrication analysis for journal bearing considering elastic deformation of cam-roller pin, roller and bearing are conducted using AVL EXCITE/PU software to predict lubrication performance. The clearance ratio and journal groove shape providing lubrication oil are important parameter in bearing design having good performance and can be changed easier than other design parameters such as diameter, width, oil supply pressure and bearing material grade. Generally, journal bearing performance is represented by the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) and peak oil film pressure(POFP). As well as the traditional design parameters(MOFT, POFP), in this study, temperature rise of lubrication oil is also evaluated through the side leakage flow of supplied oil. By the evaluating MOFT, POFP and temperature rise, the optimum bearing clearance ratio is decided.
This paper presents the theoretical model to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Foil deflection is restricted by friction of bumps. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foils is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bumps is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. This point give the difference from Heshmat's frictionless and simple compliance bump model. The fluid is modeled with the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by bump friction. This analysis technique would be extended to development of a high performance bearing.

The regimes of elastohydrodynamic lubrication at the points where line contacts occur between the vane tip and camring in an oil hydraulic vane pump is studied. A study of the contact conditions in vane pump provided most of the early interest in the possibility of fluid film lubrication in highly loaded contacts. The variation of viscosity with pressure and the elastic deformation associated with the high pressures generated in the contact region are the major causes of the complexity attributed to lubrication behavior. Therefore a numerical solutions to the problem of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of line contact are obtained by using a finite-difference formulation.

The flash temperature of the cam-roller contacting surface for a marine diesel engine was analysed numerically. The elastohydrodynamic lubrication pressure and film thickness were adopted to get more accurate frictional coefficient, heat flux and temperature distribution. The maximum flash temperature was increased with both the increasing slip ratio of the contacting surfaces and increasing external load. This study tells that the temperature analysis is an indispensable procedure in designing elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts on which the slip occurs.
Most studies of elsatohydrodynamic lubrication are oriented only to the measurement of film thickness itself with optical interferometer. In order to exactly investigate the characteristics of a certain lubricant, it is also important to get the information of traction force as well. In this work, we developed the device for measuring friction force of ehl contact condition together with the film thickness. To verify the validity of the measuring system, the friction force and film thickness under ehl condition are measured with the variation of additive ratios of viscosity index Improvers.
