  • The creep constants which are used to the reference stress equations of creep damage were obtained to type 316LN stainless steel, and their determining methods were described in detail. Typical Kachanov and Rabotnov(K-R) creep damage model was modified into the damage equations with reference stress concepts, and the modified equations were applied practically to type 316LN stainless steel. In order to determine the reference stress value, a series of high-temperature tensile tests and creep tests were accomplished at $550^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. By using the experimental creep data, the creep constants used in reference stress equations could be obtained to type 316LN stainless steel, and a creep curve on rupture strain was predicted. The reference stress concept on creep damage can be utilized easily as a design tool to predict creep life because the process, which is quantified by the measurement of voids or micro cracks during creep, is omitted.

  • Time-dependent behavior is a basic mechanical property of rocks. Predicting the failure time of rock structures by analyzing the time-dependent characteristic is important and problematic. It is tried to predict the failure time of tunnel, slope & laboratory creep test specimen from measured displacement(or strain) and rate with relationship suggested by Voight($\ddot{\Omega}=A\dot{\Omega}^\alpha$, where $\Omega$ is a measurable quantity such as strain & displacement and A & $\alpha$ are constants). A & $\alpha$ are estimated through applying the nonlinear least square method to the single and double integrated Voight's equations and utilized to predict the failure time. Predicted failure time is in accordance with real one except minor error. Linear inverse rate method applied to creep strain and rate yields a poor linear correlation of data and precision of predicted failure time is not better than methods using strain and rate.

  • The time-dependent characteristics of mudstone in this study were analyzed by performing creep tests for the mudstone in Pohang. The creep tests were conducted on various boundary conditions to observe the time-dependent behavior of mudstone and the results were compared with values predicted by established visco-elastic model and empirical equations. As a result of analysis for empirical equations proposed by Griggs(1936), Cottrell(1952) and Singh(1975), the creep constants generally tend to increase as increasing the stress level and water content. Moreover, the values predicted by Singh's equation were well fitted for the test results. Therefore, it is expected to be reasonable that creep behavior of mudstone is analyzed using Singh's equation. As a result of analysis for a Burger's model, the predicted values were well fitted for the test results. Therefore, it is expected be reasonable that the creep behavior of mudstone by a rheological model is analyzed using Burger's model.

  • Creep damage using a reference stress(RS) was analyzed for type 316LN stainless steel. The generalized K-R equation was reconstructed into the RS equation using a critical stress value $\sigma$. The RS equation was derived from the critical stress in failure time $t_f$ instead of material damage parameter $\omega$, which indicates the critical condition of collapse or approach to gross instability of materials during creep. For obtaining the reference stress, a series of creep tests and tensile tests were conducted with at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. The stress-time data obtained from creep tests were applied to the RS equations to characterize the creep damage of type 316LN stainless steel. The value of creep constant r with stress levels was about 18 at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and 21 at $600^{\circ}C$. This value was almost similar with r = 24 in the K-R equation, which was obtained by using damage parameter $\omega$. Relationship plots of creep failure strain and life fraction $(t_f /t_r)$ were also obtained with different λ values. The RS equation was therefore more convenient than the generalized K-R equation, because the measuring process to quantify the damage parameter $\omega$ such as voids or micro cracks in crept materials was omitted. The RS method can be easily used by designers and plant operator as a creep design tool.

  • Evaluation on the test of actual concrete member to confirm the fire resistance of the concrete member using ultra-high strength concrete is required. However, test equipment which has large loading capacity is needed to the actual member experiment. So, many researchers evaluated the fire performance through analytical studies using the material models. This study experimentally evaluated strain properties on ultra-high-strength concrete of 80, 130 and 180 MPa with heating and examined to apply the existing strain model about ultra-high-strength concrete. As a results, constants are drawn by method of least squares applying experimental values and calculated values by the existing strain model, it proposed strain model that can be applied to ultra-high-strength concrete.

  • In this study, the verification test and creep test for both a single-rebar nail and a multi-rebar nail are carried out to investigate a tensile strength for both nails. The adhesion effects between a rebar and a cement grout, a mobilized frictional force induced by pull-out load, and load transfer characteristics are examined. The results obtained from the field pull-out tests and from the numerical analysis using $FLAC^{2D}$ which is one of the programs developed based on the finite difference method are analyzed and compared for a single-rebar nail and a multi-rebar nail. The field pull-out test results for a multi-rebar nail relative to a single-rebar nail show that a tensile failure load is relatively large and the pull-out loads are well transferred to the ground in deep depth.

  • The materials failure relation $\ddot{\Omega}=A{(\dot{\Omega})}^\alpha$ where $\Omega$ is a measurable quantity such as displacement and the dot superscript is the time derivative, may be used to analyze the accelerating creep of materials. Coefficients, A and $\alpha$, are determined by fitting given data sets. In this study, it is tried to predict the failure time of tunnel using the materials failure relation. Four fitting techniques of applying the materials failure relation are attempted to forecast a failure time. Log velocity versus log acceleration technique, log time versus log velocity technique, inverse velocity technique are based on the linear least squares fits and non-linear least squares technique utilizes the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Since the log velocity versus log acceleration technique utilizes a logarithmic representation of the materials failure relation, it indicates the suitability of the materials failure relation applied to predict a failure time of tunnel. A linear correlation between log velocity and log acceleration appears satisfactory(R=0.84) and this represents that the materials failure relation is a suitable model for predicting a failure time of tunnel. Through comparing the real failure time of tunnel with the predicted failure times from four curve fittings, it is shown that the log time versus log velocity technique results in the best prediction.

  • The time-dependent temperature distribution across the section in bridges is determined on the basis of the three-dimensional finite element analyses and numerical time integration in this study. The material properties which change with time and thermal stress of concrete are taken into account to effectively trace the early-age structural responses. Since the temperature distribution is nonlinear and depends upon many material constants such as the thermal conductivity, specific heat, hydration heat of concrete, heat transfer coefficients and solar radiation, three representative influencing factors of the construction season, wind velocity and bridge pavement are considered at the parametric studies. The validity of the introduced numerical model is established by comparing the analytical predictions with results from previous analytical studies. On the basis of parametric studies for four different bridge sections, it is found that the creep deformation in concrete bridges must be considered to reach more reasonable design results and the temperature distribution proposed in the Korean bridge design specification need to be improved.
