  • The R/C structures is very popular because of its low construction cost and its semi-permanent life. But in Korea, unfortunately there are few exprets in this field, and the repair methods and selection of material for R/C structures are determined by their subjective personal opinions. Therefore systematic study of this field is ulgently required. For attainning this purpose, in this study the related documents and knowledge or experience from human experts were collected. Based on the collected information cracks are classified into 25 patterns and repair related-knowledge base, which will be formulated and encoded into the domain knowledge, is built. And then an expert system, that can suggest the repair methods in the same way the human experts would, is developed. The results using the developed expert system are compared to the real field practices and they are satisfactory.

  • The reinforced concrete structures have been deteriorated for various causes since it serviced for the long time. If we have to service concrete structure long time, we must repair it using appropriate methods and materials. But the data which evaluate the repair material has not been sufficient. So, the aim of this research is to estimate properties of repair materials and to acquire the data which apply to the concrete structures in field. To accomplish this objective, we have made experiment on compressive strength, bond strength, the coefficient of thermal expansion and setting time. Generally, compressive strength and bond strength are favorable but some products are unfavorable under wet curing. Setting time was faster than ordinary portland cement mortar except one material.

  • Recently many concrete structures have been deteriorated due to the corrosion of reinforcing steel caused by chloride attack. The chloride attack causes very rapid and serious deterioration. Therefore, It is necessary for highly reliable method to stop the corrosion. Especially, on damaged concrete, it is difficult to stop the progress of steel corrosion that has already occured in concrete. The indirect method of corrosion protection such as eliminating corrosion factors by coating would be hard to be expected for complete stop of corrosion. In this paper, we applied the cathodic protection to chloride attacked marine concrete structures and verified the effect in addition to application of cathodic protection.

  • Recently, the damaged concrete structures are often strengthened or repaired using the polymer concrete or the polymer cement mortar. In the repaired concrete structures at early ages, internal stresses could be developed due to the differential drying shrinkage of the repair material. Due to the difference of the thermal coefficients of the repair material and existing concrete, additional stresses also could be developed as the structures are subjected to the ambient temperature changes. Theses environmentally-induced stresses can sometimes be large enough to cause damage to the structures, such as debonding of the interface between the two materials. In this study, a rational procedure was developed where anchors can be designed and installed to prevent damages in such structures by thermally-induced stresses. Finally, through the experimental and numerical study, the effects of the repair method using anchors with debonding was investigated and discussed the results.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of surface-wave techniques for the evaluation of the crack-repairing performance of an epoxy injection method in concrete. In this study, box-shaped concrete specimens with four different crack depths were made with identical mix proportions. The specimens with different crack depths were completely repaired using the same epoxy injection method. The spectral energy transmission ratio of surface waves is used as an index to differentiate the effects of crack depth and crack-repairing performance. The decrease of spectral energy transmission ratio in accordance with the increase of crack depth was identified before repairing. Furthermore, the spectral energy transmission ratio increased after the crack-repairing process in all specimens. The spectral energy transmission ratio is considered as a great indicator for estimating the crack-repairing performance of the epoxy injection method; the ratio was recovered up to almost 95% of the uncracked condition.

  • Recently, the researches of self-healing concrete technology are being carried out actively due to the advent of importance for the maintenance of concrete structures. A water permeability test has been widely used for the evaluation of self-healing performance. However, it is difficult to compare tests results since there is no standard test method related to the self-healing. A standard method for measuring the crack width does not exist neither though the self-healing performance is significantly influenced by the initial crack width. In this study, the effect of water head and crack width on water flow was investigated using a constant water head permeability test equipment. The correlation equation between the initial crack width and water flow was suggested through the regression analysis of test data, and the predicted crack widths agree well with the real crack widths measured using microscopy.

  • The focus of this study was centered around 15 common injection type water leakage repair materials (3 different types for each; synthetic polymer, cementitious, acrylic, epoxy, urethane) used in concrete structures of Korea and analyzing their wet surface adhesion performance in accordance to the ISO TS 16774 Test Method for Repair Materials for Water-leakage Cracks in Underground Concrete Structures, Part 4: Test Method for Adhesion on Wet Concrete Surface, and the results of this study was taken to be place under a comparative analysis with the results of the preceeding study on response to substrate movement performance study. The results of this comparative study showed that other than 1 specimen of 1 type of the acrylic and 3 specimens of 1 type of the synthetic polymer type materials, all of the 93% of the specimens used in this study showed stable adhesion on wet substrate surface, and we were able to determine that materials that have proper response properties against substrate movement are highly flexible and have high adhesion properties, but their adhesion properties on wet substrate would change based on their viscosity.

  • Recent studies on concrete floating structure development focused on connection system of concrete modules. Precast concrete modules are designed to be attached by prestressing in the water, exposing the structure to the loads from water and making the construction difficult. Therefore, a development of bond material became a key issue in successful connection of floating concrete modules. In this study, micro-silica mixed aqua epoxy (MSAE) is developed for the task. Existing primer aqua epoxy, originally used as a bond material for the retrofit of concrete structures using fiber reinforced polymers, is evaluated to find the optimum micro-silica added mix proportion. Micro-silica of 0~4 volume % was mixed in standard mixture of aqua epoxy. Then, the material property tests were performed to study the effect of micro-silica in aqua epoxy by controlling the epoxy silane proportion by 0, ${\pm}5$, ${\pm}10%$. The optimum mix design of MSAE was derived based on the test results. The MSAE was used to connect concrete module specimens with the epoxy thickness variation of 5, 10, and 20mm. Then, 3-point loading test was performed to verify the bond capacity of MSAE. The results show that MSAE improves the bond capacity of concrete module.

  • Although blast furnace slag has been widely used in concrete as a cementitious admixture or aggregate for many years, the slowly cooled steel slag is not used in concrete but mainly in road. Its use in concrete operates problem such as the lack of volume stability due to high free CaO content, which can be potentially hazardous in concrete. However, the rapidly cooled steel slag by atomization has a low free CaO content, a high density, and a spherical shape, so it is expected to use in concrete so much. This paper is to understand the probability that the rapid cooled steel slag can replace the silica sand used as aggregate in the epoxy mortar. We did the experimental study on the properties of the epoxy mortar having various replacement proportion of rapidly cooled steel slag. This study shown that increasing content of the rapidly cooled steel slag in epoxy mortar lead to increase largely the passing time of nozzle by O-lot, compressive strength and flexural strength. However except the flow is almost same level. So we understand that the rapidly cooled steel slag has positive effect on increasing of properties in epoxy mortar.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) can be bonded to the soffit of a concrete beam as a means of repairing and strengthening the beam. In such beams, materials, concrete and carbon fiber sheets, are different in coefficient of thermal expansion. Consequently, interfacial shear stresses can be increased and debonding failure may occur at the plate ends due to temperature rising. This paper presents a method of approximate closed-form solutions for the interfacial shear stresses and conducts a beam test to compare the numerical results. In case of temperature rising over $30^{\circ}C$, interfacial stress of 0.91MPa is occurred at the end of sheet. Therefore, using carbon fiber sheet for strengthening the concrete beam, it is necessary to consider the thermal effects and to evaluate the long time behavior of the concrete beam by temperature change.
