  • This study focused on the investigation of compressive and flexural strengths development, and bond strength of latex modified concrete in order to validate the feasibility of application into concrete bridge deck overlay. Pull-out bond test was used for evaluating the bond strength of latex modified concrete to substrate. The main experimental variables were latex-cement ratio, surface preparation and moisture levels. The compressive strength of latex modified concrete decreased slightly and the flexural strength increased as the latex content increased from 5% to 20%. This might be due to the flexibility latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, respectively. In general, increasing the amount of latex will produce concrete with increased tensile and flexural strength and lower modulus of elasticity. Significant improvements in bond strength between new and existing concrete were achieved through the modification of the new concrete bridge deck overlay by latex polymers. The effect of surface preparation on bond of latex modified concrete to conventional concrete were significant at the conditions by sand paper and wire brush. A better bond could be achieved by rough surface rather than smooth. The saturated condition of surface is the most appropriate moisture level among the considered followed by dry condition and wet condition.

  • This paper presents the results of a study that was performed to evaluate structural behaviors and related distress of asphalt pavements on concrete bridge deck based on the visual inspection and 3-dimensional finite element analysis. As a result, three most failure types were found such as permanent deformation, potholes, and fatigue crackings. In addition, the failure mechanisms of different types of concrete bridge deck were investigated. An increase in fatigue of asphalt pavements on concrete bridge deck was observed and confirmed by the results from the visual inspections. In consequence, the aging and stripping of asphalt surfacing materials are relatively dominant factors on fatigue rather than traffic loadings.

  • The application of High Performance Concrete (HPC) for protecting bridge deck concrete with micro-silica, fly-ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag was introduced to North America in the early 1980's. This report introduces the literature reviews of high performance concrete for protecting concrete bridge deck and explains 2-different types of construction methods using this materials. One is high performance concrete overlay method and the other is full depth bridge deck method. Both methods have been successfully applied and demonstrated in north america. Especially, modified high performance concrete overlay method including silica-fume and PVA fiber has been successfully applied in korea also. Therefore, both methods that high performance concrete overlay and full depth bridge deck are considered as reasonable bridge deck protecting methods compared with the conventional bridge deck system using asphalt modified materials.

  • In this paper, actual bridges constructed with SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) deck pavement and virtual bridges substituted the deck pavement with polymer concrete under the same conditions were statically analyzed to investigate applicability of the thin polymer concrete bridge deck pavements. PSC (prestressed Concrete) girder bridge, steel box girder bridge, PSC box girder bridge, and RC (Reinforced Concrete) rahmen bridge constructed with the SMA deck pavement were analyzed and compared to evaluate various types of the bridge. The bridge deck and pavement were assumed to be fully bonded and the stress and deformation during the construction were ignored while those due to pavement weight and vehicle loading were analyzed. According to the analysis results, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the pavement weight were smaller than those using the SMA because of smaller self weight due to lighter unit weight and thinner thickness of the pavement. The stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the vehicle loading were larger than those using the SMA because of the smaller area moment of inertia due to the thinner pavement thickness. In case that the pavement weight and vehicle loading applied simultaneously, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete were smaller because effect of self weight reduction was more dominant. Investigation of performance of the bridge deck pavement and analysis of economical efficiency are warranted.

  • High performance concrete containing silica fume for use in bridge deck overlay emerged as a viable type of bridge deck overlay that economic advantage in construction. They have gained acceptance in Europe, America and Canada in a relatively short time due to their low cost. In this study, high-performance concretes containing silica fume were tested and evaluated in the laboratory to assess their applicability for use in bridge deck overlay. It was conducted with experiments of mechanical and durability characteristics in compressive strength, flexural strength, chloride permeability, abrasion resistance, repeated freezing and thawing cycles and deicing salt scaling resistance. Laboratory test result describe that high-performance concrete containing silica fume for bridge deck overlay application shows most outstanding capacity.

  • The objective of this study is to optimize the use of mineral admixtures (silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag) in high-performance concrete for bridge deck overlay. For this purpose, high-performance concrete, incorporating mineral admixtures, was tested for compressive strength and permeability. The Box Behnken design was used to determine the optimum mix proportions of the mineral admixtures. The optimized mix compositions were then technically evaluated. Test results are compare with the performance specification for high performance concrete overlay on bridge deck. The optimum mix proportions were shown to possess acceptable properties. Also, it is possible to save the construction and materials costs result from a reduction In actual material cost and from the use of widely avaliable truck mixers instead of mobile mixers.

  • Latex modified concrete (LMC) exhibits improved material properties including high tensile strength and durability compared with conventional concrete, and hence LMC has been used as protective layers over the bridge deck slabs to increase their service life with underlying assumption of excellent bond behavior between the LMC overlay and the concrete substrate. In this study, the effect of the primary parameters of the concrete substrate (i.e., shrinkage, stiffness and cracking capacity) as well as the LMC overlay thickness on the probability of cracking of the bridge deck slabs using LMC overlays was investigated by carrying out the finite element analysis that simulated the bond behavior of LMC overlays on normal strength concrete (NSC) and HPC bridge deck slabs. Based on the results of the numerical analysis, it is concluded that the relatively high shrinkage strains and stiffness of HPC slabs can increase its probability of cracking in bridge deck slabs using LMC overlay.

  • The main purpose of this research is to propose advanced bridge-decks surfacing from the examples of In-Cheon bridge with Guss asphalt and Gyul-Hyeon bridge with stone matrix asphalt(SMA) concrete. The research results presented that the Guss asphalt concrete pavement was weak when rutting was developed due to the low resistance at high temperatures. The SMA concrete pavement demonstrated good resistance to plastic deformations and was easy to maintain pavement conditions. The results mentioned above are generalized in developed counties where surfacing pavement techniques for steel bridge-decks are advanced. However, due to the lack of construction experiences in Korea, appropriate construction guidelines and organized research for the steel bridge deck pavements are necessary for more advanced steel bridge decks surfacing.

  • This research was performed to identify physical properties of polysulfide epoxy polymer concrete for ultra-thin bridge deck pavement, and improve domestic applicability. With the optimum mix ratio determined from mixing experiments of polymer concretes, compressive, flexural, and bond strength were tested to identify its strength properties along with the freezing-thawing resistance test to evaluate its durability in harsh environments. As a result, the tested polymer concretes showed excellent performance in strength and deflection characteristic and all tested strength satisfied the criteria of American Concrete Institute. Moreover, it had better performance under variable temperatures comparing to other existing pavement materials. By the results of freezing-thawing resistance test and strength measurement for specimens underwent the freezing-thawing process, it can be judged that there is no such problem to the concrete's durability. In conclusion, the newly developed polymer concrete in this research has appropriate properties for use in ultra-thin pavement on bridge deck, and moreover it has superior applicability in comparison with former materials due to its improved temperature sensitivity.
