The effects of coupling beam, which is generally used in high-rise building structure system as shear wall-coupling beam, on the lateral drift of high-rise buildings are studied in this paper. Six different analytical models, which are combination of two inputs, such as concrete strength and wall thickness, are selected and analyzed on lateral drifts with different stiffness of coupling beams. MIDAS GEN was used for analysis. Calculated lateral drifts were compared with allowable limits(H/400~H/500) proposed by standard CEN EC 3/1, in order to analyze the control evaluation of coupling beams. Calculated x-direction displacements were 68~87 percent of allowable limit(H/500). With increase of wall thickness(100mm) and concrete strength(5Mpa), eight to ten percent and four percent of x and y-direction displacement were decreased individually. About three percent of lateral displacement was increased with 20 percent decrease of coupling beam stiffness and additional 20 percent decrease resulted in additional five to eight percent increase.

A concrete element is obtained through multi-steps, and its quality is affected by site conditions and control constituents of procedures. In these regards, in order to assure designed qualities of concrete and associated materials of the element good quality control method is necessary in various procedures. The existing quality control measures do not satisfy the requirements for the quality control activities at each production step. This study provides a more effective checklist for each phase of concrete work, which improves existing quality control checklist through extensive research on current practices and surveys from expertises. This paper also proposes the application of multi-facet codes to develop a customized checklist to improve the efficiency in field practices and the effectiveness in assuring the designed performance of concrete. This study finally provides a more effective checklist for each phase of concrete work by improving usability of the developed project sensitive matric quality control checklist through application experiments on construction project sites.

It is necessary to measure cracks on concrete slab surface accurately in concrete structure maintenance for the stability of the structure. However, in real world, the process is done by time consuming and ineffective manual inspection. Although there have been some studies to provide computerized inspection methods, they are vulnerable to rugged surface or noise due to the influence of the light or environmental reasons. In this paper, we propose a new method that extracts not only undistorted cracks but minute cracks that were often regarded as noise. We extract candidate crack areas by applying fuzzy method with R, G, and B channel values of concrete slab structure. Then further refinement processes are performed with SOM algorithm and density based cutoff to remove noise. Experiment verifies that the proposed method is sufficiently useful in various crack images.
Recently, the remodeling projects of old low-rise buildings were launched in Korea. However, most of them were not satisfied with the value set forth by the KBC2005. Even though there are some research studies on how to improve the seismic performance of such buildings as newly constructed buildings, there is little research in measuring the actual vibrations on low old buildings to prove the effect of retrofit. There also has not been any in-depth research on the dynamic characteristics of full-scale structures using vibration measurements of the building that was damaged to failure. Using an actuator, the dynamic characteristics of reinforced three-storey concrete buildings were evaluated before and after they were damaged. After an 80-mm horizontal displacement by the actuator, frequency in the long and short directions were reduced to 20.85% and 5.77% respectively ; damping ratio was also reduced to 53.9% and 23.15% respectively.

Because of the difference between the actual and computed eccentricity of buildings, symmetrical buildings will be affected by torsion. In provisions, accidental eccentricity is intended to cover the effect of several factors, such as unfavorable distributions of dead- and live-load masses and the rotational component of ground motion about a vertical axis. The torsional amplification factor is introduced to reduce the vulnerability of torsionally imbalanced buildings. The effect of the torsional amplification factor is observed for a symmetric rectangular building with various aspect ratios, where the seismic-force-resisting elements are positioned at a variable distance from the geometrical center in each direction. For verifying the torsional amplification factor in provisions, nonlinear reinforced concrete models with various eccentricities and aspect ratios are used in rock. The difference between the maximum displacements of the flexible edge obtained between using nonlinear static and time-history analysis is very small but the difference between the maximum torsional angles is large.
This study is aimed to analyze the reduction performance of building energy consumption according to planting base types of panel-type green walls which can be applied to existing buildings. The performance was compared to the general performance of green walls that have demonstrated effects of improving the thermal environment and reducing building energy consumption in urban areas. The number of planting base types was 4 in total, and simulations were conducted to analyze the thermal conductivity, thermal transmittance, and overall building energy consumption rate of each planting base type. The highest thermal conductivity by the planting base type was Case C (0.053W/mK), followed by Case B (0.1W/mK) and Case D (0.17W/mK). According to the results of energy simulation, the most significant reduction of cooling peak load per unit area was Case C (1.19%), followed by Case B (1.14%) and Case D (1.01%) when compared to Case A to which green wall was not applied; and the most significant reduction of heating peak load per unit area was estimated to be Case C (2.38%), followed by Case B (1.82%) and case D (1.50%) when compared to Case A. The amount of yearly cooling and heating energy use per unit area showed 3.04~3.22% of reduction rate. The amount of the 1st energy use showed 5,844 kWh/yr of decrease on average for other types when compared to Case A. The amount of yearly $CO_2$ emission showed 996kg of decrease on average when compared to Case A to which the green wall was not applied. According to the results of energy performance evaluation by planting location, the most efficient energy performance was eastward followed by westward, southward and northward. According to the results of energy performance evaluation by planting location by green wall ratio, it was found that as the ratio of green wall increased, the energy performance displayed better results, showing approx. double reduction rate in energy consumption at 100% of green wall ratio than the reduction rate at 20% to 80% of green wall ratio.
The advantages of composite construction are now well understood in terms of structural economy, good performance in service, and ease of construction. However, these conventional composite construction systems have some problems in application to steel framed buildings due to their large depth. So, in this study we executed an experimental test with the "Slim Floor"system which could reduce the overall depth of composite beam. Slim Floor system is a method of steel frame multi-story building construction in which the structural depth of each floor is minimized by incorporating the steel floor beams within the depth of the concrete floor slab. Presented herein is an experimental study that focuses on the flexural behaviour of the partially connected slim floor system with asymmetric steel beams encased in composite concrete slabs. Eight full-scale specimens were constructed and tested in this study with different steel beam height, slab width, with or without shear connection and concrete topping thickness. Observations from experiments indicated that the degree of shear connection without additional shear connection was $0.53{\sim}0.95$ times that of the full shear connection due to inherent mechnical and chemical bond stress.
The purpose of this study is to investigate seismic performance of a bearing wall system for apartment buildings. An 1/3 scale three-story specimen was constructed and tested under cyclic lateral loads. The specimen was consisted of pierced walls and coupling elements as well as floor slabs. The bearing wall system is considered to have a adequate deformation capacity up to $2.0\%$ of roof drift ratio, and the experimental results showed the ductile load-deformation characteristics even though some walls were failed in shear Nonlinear analysis was peformed to compare the load-deformation curve obtained from the experimental program. The result of nonlinear analysis could be useful to predict the actual behavior characteristics of the bearing wall system subjected to lateral loads.
Radon-222 exhalation rate from several domestic building materials were experimentally measured by using radon cup method, in which a CR-39 plastic is used as a passive radon detector. The radon detection factor of CR-39 detector determined in a series of calibration experiments was $0.164{\pm}0.005(tracks\;cm^{-2}/Bq\;d\;m^{-3})$, which is consistent with those reported by other investigators. The radon exhalation rates of several building materials (brick, red brick, concrete block, granite plate, concrete floor and wall) ranges from $6.8{\times}10^{-6}\;(granite plate)\;to\;75.0{\times}10^{-6}Bq/m^2-sec(brick)$ with the increasing order of granite plate, red brick, concrete wall, concrete block, concrete floor and brick. It showed that the CR39 radon cup can be efficiently utilized in measuring the radon-222 gas exhalation rate from building materials.
ACI 318 (1999) defines three types of moment frames: Ordinary Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (OMRCF), Intermediate Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (IMRCF), and Special Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (SMRCF). OMRCF is the most popular type of moment frame in mild seismic zones that requires the least detail and design requirements. This study focuses on the seismic performance of Ordinary Moment Resisting Concrete Frames (OMRCF) designed only for gravity loads. For this purpose a 3-story OMRCF was designed in compliance with the minimum design requirements in ACI 318 (1999). An one third 3 story specimen was made and tested. For scaled model, the similitude law of true replica was applied. The specimen was loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic lateral loading. The overall behavior of OMRCF is quite stable without abrupt strength degradation. It is found that tested frame has the base shear strength larger than the design base shear for seismic zone 1, 2A and 2B calculated using UBC 1997.
