  • This study examined whether there is a difference in cost asymmetry between a corporate listed on KOSDAQ and a corporate listed on KOSPI, and whether there is a difference in cost asymmetry depending on the size of the listed corporate. In the previous study, cost asymmetry was examined only for listed corporate, but the difference in size between KOSDAQ-listed corporate and KOSPI-listed corporate was not examined. However, according to many studies, since the characteristics of corporate and firm risks are different between corporate listed on KOSPI and corporate listed on KOSDAQ, or even for listed corporate, such an impact may affect the decision-making of internal resource allocation. The analysis was conducted that there would be a difference in the impact. For this study, the results of analyzing the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets from 2011 to 2019 using the cost behavior model of Anderson et al. (2003), There was a difference in cost behavior in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets. Overall, as in previous studies, Cost Stickiness was appeared. but in the case of the KOSPI market, Cost Stickiness was mitigated. It was found that corporate with large corporate size made the decision to dispose of idle resources more clearly when sales decreased. In addition, it was observed that the higher the foreign investor's ownership ratio, the KOSPI market, and the larger the corporate size, the more clearly the Stickiness of cost was mitigated. This study expands research on cost asymmetry and reveals that there is a difference between the KOSPI market and the KOSDAQ market, and between the size of the corporate, and has a differentiation from previous studies.

  • This paper is brought to carry out an empirical study whether evolution process of venture firm's scale is following the Gibrat's law; random evolution process, or Pareto law; self-organizing process. The empirical test, as attaching theoretical explanation, of this research utilize the serial data samples of 92 KOSDAQ listed companies from the year of 2005 through 2008. Summarizing the research results are as followed. First, Gini Coefficients representing the density of venture firm's scale has been constantly reduced since the year of 2005 in terms of number of employee, while these index increased during the same time period from the perspective of sales volume. Second, the evolution process of Korea venture firm's scale is following the Power Law related to Pareto Law. In particular, estimated Pareto coefficient, ${\alpha}$, is shown lower than 1 which is significant result. Third, the probability of joining in the top tier group of firm starting from the early stage growing is forecasted into 6.9%, the result which emphasize the starting scale of venture firm play an important role in long term evolution of venture firm.

  • This study examines long term performance of initial public offerings(IPO) after book building was introduced in KOSDAQ market. We use event time portfolio approach and calendar time portfolio approach to test if the performance of IPO is fair or not in long term. We estimate the performance by using the BHAR(buy and hold abnormal return), CAR(cumulative abnormal return), WR(wealth relatives) model in event time portfolio approach. And we calculate the performance by using Fama-French three factor model, CTAR(calendar time abnormal return), RATS(Return Across Time and Securities approach) model in calendar time portfolio approach. This study shows that the long term performance of IPO is positive with statistical significance as the results of the analysis through the various research method and all windows in all kinds of firms and total firms.

  • This study examine the relation between small and medium firm's stability and tax avoidance. We use some financial data of small and medium IT firms in KOSDAQ during 2001 to 2009. Following previous research(Desai and Dhamapala 2006), we estimate corporate tax avoidance. And we use quick ratio and current ratio as a short-term stability and equity ratio as a long-term stability. Empirical results follows as. First, It was not significant statistically between short-term stability and corporate tax avoidance. Second, it was significant statistically between the long-term stability and corporate. As corporate tax avoidance increases, the long-term stability(equity ratio) was low. Our analysis provides the empirical evidence between long-term stability and tax avoidance. It offers implications of corporate tax avoidance to small and medium IT firms in KOSDAQ. But this results is difficult generalization because of sample limits.

  • This study examines the implications of special items (SI) for future earnings using quarterly Korean data over the period from 2011 to 2014. Due to the lack of identification of SI in Korea, I choose several items as special items if they are material and non-recurring items following prior studies. Then I regressed seasonally-differenced future earnings on positive and negative SI and found that their effects on future earnings were different. While negative SI are explained by inter-period expense transfer, positive SI are not well-described by traditional prototypes. Next, I regressed seasonally-differenced future earnings on negative SI sub-types as they are heterogeneous in nature and have differing implications for future earnings. While PPE impairments and intangibles impairments are partly explained by the inter-period expense transfer, unspecified loss of other loss items are not. Interestingly, these effects are attenuated or disappear in the Kosdaq market when the markets are divided into the Kospi and Kosdaq markets.

  • This paper tests cross hedging performance of the KOSPI 200 stock index futures to hedge the downside risk of the KOSPI, KOSPI 200 and KOSDAQ50 spot market. For this purpose we introduce the minimum variance hedge model, bivariate GARCH(1,1) and EGARCH(1,1) model as hedge models. The main results are as follows; First, we find that the direct hedge performance of KOSPI 200 index futures is better than those of indirect hedge performance. second, in case or cross hedge performance the hedge effect of KOSPI 200 stock index futures market against KOSPI 200 stock index spot market is relatively better than those of KOSPI 200 index futures against KOSPI and KOSDAQ spot position. Third, for the out-sample, hedging effectiveness of the risk-minimization with constant hedge ratios is higher than those of the time varying bivariate GARCH(1,1) and EGARCH(1,1) model. In conclusion, investors are encouraged to use simple risk-minimization model rather than the time varying hedge models like GARCH and EGARCH model to hedge the position of the Korean stock index cash markets.

  • I investigate whether the efficient ratios used as the proxies of the agency costs maintained by Ang et al.(2000) is significant. Utilizing a sample of 77 manufacturing companies listed on the KOSDAQ from the TS2000 of the KSDA, The results are as follows. Agency costs are found to be decreasing with the ownership share of controlling shareholders and accounting performance becomes higher. But firm value measured by Tobin's Q ratio becomes lower according as the ownership of the controlling shareholders increases. If agency costs decrease in proportion to controlling shareholder's share, firm value should be higher according to the agency theory by Jensen and Meckling(I976). But the results of the empirical test of this study are inconsistent with Jensen and Meckling's(1976). Therefore the following study on the more useful proxies stand for agency costs should be needed.

  • Although the display industry plays an important role in the entire Korean economy, few empirical research has analyzed the efficiency of display companies. The purpose of this paper is to measure and analyze efficiency of korean listed display firms using DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) models. We evaluate the CCR and BCC efficiency in DEA models and the return to scale of the Korean listed display companies. The benchmarking companies and efficiency value for the display companies with inefficiency are also provided to improve their efficiency. We analyzed the 44 listed companies consisted of 7 listed on KOSPI and 37 listed on KOSDAQ at the end of 2010. The analysis results show six companies whose values of CCR are 1, and fourteen firms whose values of BCC efficiency are 1. In additions, the six companies have the scalability efficiency. Eventually the efficiency analysis can provide the valuable information for inefficient companies to find benchmarking companies and to improve their efficiency.

  • Most previous studies found a positive relationship between the value of a firm and its R&D investments. This research measures the impact of the timescale of the R&D investment of a firm on its value using panel vector autoregression. By measuring the time required for R&D to impact the value of a firm, this study demonstrates that the lead time is an essential factor in the analysis of the effect of R&D investment on a firm's value. Our study finds that the length of the lead time varies according to the firm's size, industry concentration, and book to market ratio. Firms with a higher industry concentration show a shorter lead time. Also, firms with a larger size and higher book to market ratio generally show a shorter lead time.
