  • The stereoselective synthesis of chiral terminal epoxide is of immense interest due to their utility as versatile starting materials as well as chiral intermediates. In this study, new chiral Co(salen) complexes bearing cobalt(II) chloride, iron(III) chloride and zinc(II) nitrate have been synthesized and characterized. The mass and EXAFS spectra provided the direct evidence of formation of complex. Their catalytic activity and selectivity have been demonstrated for the asymmetric ring opening of terminal epoxides such as styrene oxide and phenylglycidylether by hydrolytic kinetic resolution technology and for the synthesis of glycidyl buthylate. The easily prepared complexes exhibited very high enantioselectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of epoxides with $H_2O$ nucleophile, providing enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (>99% ee). The newly synthesized chiral salen showed remakablely enhanced reactivity with substantially low loadings. The system described in this work is very efficient for the sinthesis of chiral epoxide and 1,2-diol intermediates.

  • An investigation was performed to prepare spherical cobalt powder with about particle size of 400nm from aqueous cobalt hydroxide slurry under hydrothermal reduction conditions using palladium chloride as a catalyst. The reduction kinetics was in good agreement with a surface reaction core model equation. and the activation energy obtained from Arrhenius plots was 55.6 KJ/mol at the temperature range of $145~195^{\circ}C$. Additionally, the study showed that the cobalt reduction rate is proportional to the initial hydrogen pressure with a reaction order of n=0.63. which corresponds to the gas chemisorption reaction type.

  • As world population increases and the world economy expalds, so does the demand for natural resources especially strategic metals such as cobalt. An accurate assesment of the nation's minerals must include not only the resources available in the ground but also those that become available through recycling. In this paper, data on domestic and international supply of cobalt and its applications by end-user were analyzed for stable security of cobalt resources and effective recycling of cobalt scraps. Also, an initial evaluation of the flow of cobalt-containing materials in the United States was prepared. In 2003, 8,000 metric tons of cobalt were consumed in the United States and an estimated 28% of U.S. cobalt supply was derived from scrap. The superalloy industry and catalyst industries have well-established recycling or cobalt recovery practices. Recycling rates of cobalt scraps from magnet alloy and cemented carbide were relatively low.

  • Effects of Co and Co-P catalysts on the hydrolysis of alkaline $NaBH_4$ solution were investigated. Co and Co-P catalysts were prepared on Cu substrate by electroplating. Hydrogen generation rate of Co-P catalyst was much faster than that of Co catalyst, demonstrating that Co-P had higher intrinsic catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ than Co. Hydrogen generation properties of Co-P catalysts largely depended on cathodic current density and electroplating time because they influenced on the P concentration of the Co-P catalysts. Maximum hydrogen generation rate of Co-P catalyst was 1066 ml/min.g-catalyst in 1 wt.% NaOH + 10 wt.% $NaBH_4$ solution at $20^{\circ}C$, which was obtained at cathodic current density of $0.01\;A/cm^2$ for 130 s.
