Research was initiated to investigate seasonal turf quality under a sand-based USGA soil system. USGA system 45 centimeters deep was built with rootzone layer, intermediate layer, and drainage layer. Six turfgrass entries were comprised of 3 blends and 3 mixtures from cool-season grasses (CSG). Turfgrass quality ratings were best in spring and fall, especially early May to early July and late August to early November. Kentucky bluegrass(KB) consistently produced the greatest quality, while perennial ryegrass (PR) the poorest. Intermediate turf quality between KB and PR was observed with tall fescue (TF). Among CSG mixtures it increased with KB but decreased with PR. There were considerable variations in summer turf performance. No summer drought injury was found in KB and TF. However, PR showed poor performance through summer as compared with other CSG. Results demonstrate that KB was the best and PR the worst among CSG grown in a sand-based USCA soil system.
This study was performed to find the effective post-emergence herbicides to control of Poa annua that has already emerged from the soil in Kentucky bluegrass. A total of 8 treatments consist of various post-emergence herbicides applied at recommended concentration or lower concentration than recommended concentration to prevent Kentucky bluegrass injury in this study. Methiozolin showed the least injury in Kentucky bluegrass during 40 days after treatments and there were no footprints by methiozolin in creeping bentgrass green during 20 days. However, Poa annua control was 60.4%, which was less than those of other 7 treatments in this study. Both of asulam sodium and iodosulfuron plus asulam sodium exhibited the higher Poa annua control of 81.7% and 82.2% respectively without serious injury in Kentucky bluegrass during 40 days, and they showed a slight footprints damage in creeping bentgrass green. On the other hand, critical Kentucky bluegrass injuries and the vivid and numerous footprints were occurred in treatments of trifloxysulfuron-sodium, foramsulfuron, rimsulfuron and flazasulfuron, even though they were applied with only 1/4 of recommended concentration. Methiozolin is available to reduce gradually Poa annua population on Kentucky bluegrass without severe turfgrass damage. Asulam sodium or iodosulfuron plus asulam sodium could be useful to remove Poa annua by spot treatment but it is prohibited to spray directly on green even spot.

This study was conducted to evaluate the appropriate sowing method and mixture seeding rate on germination of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.). The experimental design includes two sowing methods and six mixed seeding per each method: BT1:BP0 (broadcast seeding; B, Trifolium repens; T, Poa pratensis; P), BT1:BP2, BT1:BP3, BT3:BT1, BT2:BP1, BT0:BP1 and ST1:SP0 (spot seeding; S), ST1:SP2, ST1:SP3, ST3:ST1, ST2:SP1, ST0:SP1. The germination was the highest for both species when the seeding rate was higher than other species. In overall, the germination of white clover was higher and faster than Kentucky bluegrass. Two plots, BT2:BP1, ST1:ST2, were retained the balanced proportion of the germination rate. Therefore, It was suggested, for maintaining the balanced field, it is better to seed white clover twice Kentucky bluegrass on broadcast seeding and Kentucky bluegrass twice white clover on spot seeding. In regard of sowing method, broadcast seeding is better than spot seeding in terms of increasing the germination. It is necessary to supplement the result for real application by long-term monitoring.

This study was conducted to evaluate the selective control of creeping bentgrass invaded in Kentucky bluegrass by applying several herbicides and recovery of Kentucky bluegrass by sand injection seeding method. Selective herbicides such as mecoprop, triclopyr-TEA, imazaquin, bentazone and penosulam pyrazosulfuro-ethyl and non-selective herbicides such as glyphosate, paraquat dichloride and glyphsate ammonium oxyflorfen were used. Selective suppression of creeping bentgrass in Kentucky bluegrass was evaluated by turf color, chlorophyll and visual control indexes. Control of creeping bentgrass was most effective with the double dose application of triclopyr-TEA (2 Tri-T) in the selective herbicides and the 1 / 5 dose application of glyphosate ammonium oxyflorfen (1 / 5 GAO) in the non-selective herbicides. Visual control indexes by 2 Tri-T in selective herbicides and 1 / 5 GAOin non-selective herbicides were investigated 6.0 and 7.4, respectively. Treated sites were covered completely in 50 days after seeding Kentucky bluegrass by sand injection method.
Research was initiated to investigate the effect of high water-absorbing polymer on turf grass quality of three major turfgrasses. A total of 12 treatment combinations were used in the study. Treatments were made with different rates of sand, soil organic amendment (SOA), and water-swelling polymer (WSP). Visual turf grass quality was evaluated in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds., CB), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L., KB), and zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud., Zoy) grown under greenhouse conditions. Significant differences were observed among the treatments in CB, KB, and Zoy. Visual quality ratings varied with mixing rates of SOA and WSP, being maximum 5.6 in differences among them. At the end of study it ranged from 0.3 to 9.6 in CB, 0.3 to 4.0 in KB, and 0.9 to 5.8 in Zoy. Turfgrass quality pattern changed with time after seeding among treatments influenced by WSP rates. From this study, a proper rate of WSP is considered to be 5%, 5~10%, and 5% for CB, KB and Zoy, respectively. In general, overall treatment effect of WSP on turfgrass quality was highly associated with SOA 20% in three turtgrass species. When mixing sand with SOA and WSP for rootzone soil, a proper rate of SOA is considered to be 15 to 20% for CB and KB, while 20% for Zoy of warm-season grass. A further study would be required to investigate the effect of varied, gradual mixing rates of WSP on growth characteristics of turfgrasses grown on mixtures of sand, SOA, and WSP before a field application.
In the middle of May 2018, typical red thread disease symptoms were observed on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) on a golf course, which locates at Yangsan, Gyeongnam province in Korea. Irregular-shaped patched symptoms were observed in fairway of golf course. The foliar symptom was dried out and faded to straw color and tip of the grass leaves were tangled like thread. Early morning, infected and tangled leaves were covered with the pinkish gelatinous antler-like structure (sclerotinia) as a typical red thread disease symptom. Causal fungal pathogens were isolated from the symptom in Kentucky bluegrass. The fungal culture characteristic on potato dextrose agar color of colony was pale pink and conjugated hyphae, sclerotium of irregular shape was pale pink and 3~5mm diameter in size. The pathogen was identified as Laetisaria fuciformis based on morphological and culture characteristics as well as molecular characteristics. Pathogenicity test was verified on the Kentucky bluegrass by Koch's postulates. This is the first report of red thread disease occurrence in Kentucky bluegrass by L. fuciformis in Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate nutrient content at shoot and root(contained runner in zoysiagrass) in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass before turfgrass dormancy. The shoot ratio of dry weight in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 12%, 27% and 25% and root ratio was 88%, 73% and 75%, respectively. The orders of nutrients contained in turf-grass were N>K>Ca>P>Mg>Na in plant tissues. The proportion of nutrients in tissue of creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 17%, 28% and 34% in shoot and 83%, 72% and 66% in root, respectively. These results showed that nutrients in turf-grass tissue was contained more than 70% in root before grasses dormancy. In turf grass management, all grasses were required to fertilize sufficiently N, $K_2O$, CaO and $P_2O_5$ before winter.
Professional turfgrass applicators have reduced or eliminated phosphorus from their fertilization programs based on the assumption that soil phosphorus levels are supplying adequate amounts of phosphorus to the turfgrass. The previous researchers found that there were no P effects for turfgrass growth especially for mature turf. No effects may result from high P level in heavy thatch layer. The research was conducted for one year to investigate the effects of phosphorus fertilization programs on turfgrass performance, and monitor soil and plant tissue nutrient levels to determine the impact of the programs on a newly seeded Kentucky bluegrass. The nitrogen treatments were 20, 30 and $40g\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. The low, medium, and high nitrogen treatments were applied over 2, 4 and 6 applications, respectively. Nitrogen was applied using a formulation containing 30% of slow and 70% of fast release nitrogen sources that are representative of typical home lawn fertilizers. The phosphorus treatments were 0, 10 and $20g\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. Phosphorus was applied according to the application schedule for the nitrogen treatments. Kentucky bluegrass was seeded in May, 2010. The thickness of thatch layer was less than 1 cm and the first treatment was applied to Kentucky bluegrass in April, 2011. The low N rate treatment had acceptable color and quality ratings without high clipping yields. The high N rate treatment consistently had the highest color and quality ratings but also had very high clipping yields in comparison to the low and medium N rate treatments. Although there are significant differences in tissue P, Overall, there was no effect of phosphorus on color, quality, or clipping weights.
This study was performed to provide useful information for kentucky bluegrass management during summer by application of plant growth regulator, Trinexapac-ethyl. Visual quality, shoot density and chlorophyll contents of treatment blocks were significantly different from those of control during summer by application of Trinexapac-ethyl. The turfgrass density of treatment was increased of 4ea/$10\;cm^2$, especially about 5ea/$10\;cm^2$ during the growth retarded period of June and July. Chlorophyll contents index and visual quality of kentucky bluegrass were improved by application of Trinexapac-ethyl during summer, too. In addition, the occurrence of foliage in rainy and high temperature season was less than that of control. However, there was no significant difference in the root length of Kentucky Bluegrass. Meanwhiles, mowing height of kentucky Bluegrass was suppressed by 38% at 2 WAT week after treatment and that there was no significant growth of treatment at 4 WAT. In this experiment, turfgrass quality was significantly better than that of control during July, even though trinexapac-ethyl wasn't applied at all in July. Consequently, periodic treatment of trinexapac- ethyl from spring would be very important to promote the turfgrass visual quality during summer which is unfavorable season on the growth of kentucky bluegrass. And it is possible to reduce mowing times at least 30% for 2 weeks by one application of Trinexapac-ethyl 0.02~0.03 ml/$m^2$ in kentucky bluegrass fairway. Additively, trinexapac- ethyl treatment can be helpful environmentally by cutting down the fertilizers and pesticides in golf course.
Research was initiated to investigate root growth characteristics of major cool-season grasses (CSG) and to collect basic information useful for sports turf design, construction and maintenance. Several turfgrasses were evaluated in the USGA (United States Golf Association) soil system. Turfgrass entries were comprised 3 blends and 3 mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), and tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Significant differences were found in root growth, rooting potential and rooting development. These characteristics increased with time after seeding, but varied with establishment stages. In early stage, root length was highest with PR, intermediate with TF and lowest with KB. Evaluation in a middle stage indicated that root growth was similar to early-stage evaluation, but decreased by 13 to 31% compared with early-stage values. Root growth of late stage increased by 34 to 85% over middle-stage root growth. Overall, thhere was not much difference in root length among treatments, with all except Mixture I reaching 22cm in root length. Rooting potential ranking was variable with establishment stage, being PR > KB > TF in early stage, PR > TF > KB in middle stage and TF > PR > KB in late stage. At the end of the study, TF was rated best for rooting development, followed by PR and finally KB. Our results showed that TF was the best species in regard to overall rooting characteristics. TF exhibited excellent rooting development with time after establishment. Bunch-type PR showed fast root growth in the early stage, but rooting quality characteristics decreased with time, especially for rooting development. By contrast, rhizomatous-type KB was poor in early-stage root growth, but rooting characteristics improved with time after establishment. These variations in rooting characteristics among CSGs were considered to arise from differences in establishment vigor, growth habit and genetic characteristics. Information on root growth, rooting potential and rooting development by establishment stages will be useful for sports turf design, construction and maintenance.
