The development of an azimuth thruster which has the function of dynamic positioning and propulsion has been greatly required as the demand of vehicles with it increases. To develop or design a reliable azimuth thruster, it is appropriate that the performance and cavitation observation tests should be conducted in the regime of high Reynolds number. In the present study, to satisfy high Reynolds number condition new dynamometer for a large azimuth thruster is manufactured and arranged in the test section of the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The test method composed of the open water and the cavitation observation tests is established successfully in LCT, considering the thruster design.

It is reported to develop the driving pump for the Low Noise Large Cavitation Tunnel(LOCAT) which is under construction at Maritime & Ocean Engineering Research Institute(MOERI). For low background noise condition of the LOCAT, it is crucial not only the best pump efficiency but also no cavity occurrence at any operating conditions. Design condition of the pump is determined by considering the required pump headrise, flow quantity, shaft rotation velocity and pump diameter. Performance analysis of the pump is conducted using commercial CFD codes ($BladeGen^+$, CFX-10), and the predicted results are verified by a series of model tests. Cavity was not observed at any operating condition in the model test, which were conducted at the midium cavitation tunnel of MOERI. The optimum pump for LOCAT, named as LP-11, was successfully developed through a series of pump design processes composed of blade design, performance analysis and model test.

In order to investigate propulsion efficiency and cavitation characteristics for expanded area ratio variation of the 8800TEU class container propeller, a series of performance tests were conducted at Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) and Towing Tank (TT) in KRISO. The cavitation test of the existing propellers (KP1029 & KP1030) was conducted using FRP model ship in LCT. On the basis of LCT test results, it was required to design propeller with better propulsion efficiency and cavitation performance. Two propellers (KP1171 & KP1172) with decreased expanded area ratio were designed on the basis of KP1029 propeller. The new design propellers showed higher efficiency than KP1029 and reasonable cavitation performance. In the future, they will be applied as the standard propeller for the propeller design of the large container ship. Through the performance test and prediction results for the new design propellers, it is thought that high-load propeller with better propulsion efficiency and cavitation performance will be developed constantly.

In order to study correlation of the propeller cavitation performance between a full-scale ship and a model ship for the MR Tanker, the full-scale ship and the model tests were conducted. The full-scale ship test is composed of cavitation observation, pressure fluctuation and noise measurements, which are conducted using 2 observation windows and 8 pressure transducers installed inside the full-scale ship above the propeller. The model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT) was conducted at the same conditions as that of the full-scale ship and its results are compared with those of the full-scale ship. Through the model-ship correlation analysis, it is considered that the experimental technique for the MR Tanker class ship was verified in LCT.

In the present study, a method of performing cavitation erosion test directly on the anodized surface of the rudder model is proposed, not applying ink or paint on its surface. An image processing technique is newly developed to quantitatively evaluate the erosion damages on the rudder model surface after erosion test. The preprocessing saturation image, image smoothing, adaptive hysteresis thresholding and eroded area detection algorithms are in the image processing program. The rudder cavitation erosion tests are conducted in the rudder deflection angle range of 0° to -4°, which is used to maintain a straight course at the highest speed of the targeted navy ship. In the case of the conventional flat-type full-spade rudder currently being used in the target ship, surface erosion can occur on the model rudder surface in the above rudder deflection angle range. The bubble type of cavitation occurs on rudder surface, which is estimated to be the main reason of erosion damage on the rudder surface.

A Propeller design method using the newly developed blade section(KH18), which behaves better cavitation characteristics, is presented. Experimental results for two-dimensional foil sections show that the lift-drag curve and the cavitation-free bucket diagram of the new blade section are wider comparing to those of the existion NACA sections. This characteristic of the new section is particularly important for marine propeller applications since angle of attack variation of the propeller blade operating behind a non-uniform ship's wake is relatively large. A lifting surface theory is used for the design of a propeller with the developed section for a 2700 TEU container ship. Since the most suitable chordwise loading shape is not known a priori, chordwise loading shape is chosen as a design parameter. Five propellers with different chordwise loading shapes and different foil sections are designed and tested in the towing tank and cavitation tunnel at KRISO. It is observed by a series of extensive model tsets that the propeller(KP197) having the chordwise loading shape, which has less leading edge loading at the inner radii and more leading edge loading at the outer radii of 0.7 radius, has higher propulsive efficiency and better cavitation characteristics. The KP197 propeller shows 1% higher efficiency, 30% cavitation volume reduction and 9% reduction of fluctuating pressure level comparing to the propeller with an NACA section. More appreciable efficiency gain for the new blade section propeller would be expected by reduction of expanded blade area considering the better cavitation characteristics of the new blade section.

An axisymmetric submerged body(L=5.6m, Diam=0.53m) is installed in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) of KRISO and the nominal and total velocities without and with the propeller in operation, respectively, are measured using Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The flow field is nearly axisymmetric except the wake of the supporting strut, and is considered ideal to study the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the oncoming axisymmetric sheared flow. The measured velocity data are then provided to compute the propeller-induced velocity to get the effective velocity, which is defined by subtracting the propeller-induced velocity from the total velocity. We adopted, in computing the induced velocity, two different methods including the vortex lattice method and the vortex tube actuator model to evaluate the resultant effective velocity distribution. To secure a fundamental base of experimental data necessary for the research on the effective wake, we measured the drag of the submerged body, the nominal and total velocity distributions at various axial locations for three different tunnel water speeds.

In order to investigate force and cavitation characteristics for the flat & twisted rudders in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the rudder dynamometer was designed and manufactured. The measuring capacities of lift, drag and moment are ±1000 N, ±2000 N, and ±150 N-m, respectively. The present dynamometer uses the actuator with a harmonic drive to control the rudder angle without backlash. As the target ship is a military ship with twin shaft, each dynamometer was installed above the port & starboard rudders. After the installation of the model ship with all appendages, the model test composed of rudder force measurement and cavitation observation was conducted for the existing flat rudder & the designed twisted rudder. While the flat rudder showed the big difference of lift & moment between port & starboard, the twisted rudder presented a similar trend. The cavitation of the twisted rudder showed better characteristics than that of the flat rudder. Another set of model tests were conducted to investigate rudder performance by the change of the design propeller. There was little difference in rudder performance for the design propellers with slight geometric change. Through the model test, the characteristics of the flat & twisted rudders were grasped. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the rudder with better performance would be developed.

Underwater noise radiated from submarines is directly related to the probability of being detected by the sonar of an enemy vessel. Therefore, minimizing the noise of a submarine is essential for improving survival outcomes. For modern submarines, as the speed and size of a submarine increase and noise reduction technology is developed, interest in flow noise around the hull has been increasing. In this study, a noise analysis technique was developed to predict flow noise generated around a submarine shape considering the free surface effect. When a submarine is operated near a free surface, turbulence-induced noise due to the turbulence of the flow and bubble noise from breaking waves arise. First, to analyze the flow around a submarine, VOF-based incompressible two-phase flow analysis was performed to derive flow field data and the shape of the free surface around the submarine. Turbulence-induced noise was analyzed by applying permeable FW-H, which is an acoustic analogy technique. Bubble noise was derived through a noise model for breaking waves based on the turbulent kinetic energy distribution results obtained from the CFD results. The analysis method developed was verified by comparison with experimental results for a submarine model measured in a Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT).

In order to verify the lift enhancement of the 2D hydrofoil with trailing edge rotor and check the ability of its practical use, experimental studies were conducted in the caviation tunnel using the test model with NACA0020 section. The three-component forces acting on the model could be measured by exclusively designed sting type multi-component load cell. The trailing edge of the model has been replaced with rotor which could be controlled by DC servo motor installed at the exterior of the tunnel. A typical effect of the trailing edge rotor has been introduced among the systematic experiments on various angular deviation of the model and the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor. It is appeared that the circulation control effect could be easily adjusted by selecting the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor and the lift force was augmented more than two times. Thus the proposed lifting device could be utilized as a novel high lifting device which has adjustability of lift force.
