우리는 침팬지의 행동이 인간의 행동과 유사하다는 점에 늘 흥미를 가져왔다. 침팬지 사회의 권력쟁탈, 서열, 연합, 분할지배 전략, 복종, 거래 등은 오늘날 인간에게서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 현상들이다. 어쩌면 우리는 침팬지의 행동에서 내면에 숨겨진 인간의 본성을 들여다보는 듯한 느낌에 빠져 있는지도 모른다.

침팬지가 진화하여 사람이 되었을 것이라는 진화론은 지금도 많은 사람들의 공감을 얻고 있다. 그러나 오랜 세월을 두고 상급동물인 인간으로 진화되기 위해서는 인간과 침팬지 중간쯤에 해당하는 인팬지라는 동물이 있어야 하지 않을까? 그러므로 진화론이 영원한 궁금증으로 남을 것인지 아니면 누군가가 속시원하게 설명해 줄 것인지 알수없는 일이다.

The chimpanzee and gorilla are classified into hominidae, catarrhini, primates. These species are originated from Africa, so called African great apes. Recently, primatologists have classified that there are 2 species 5 subspecies of the chimpanzee and gorilla, respectively. Since the human genome project has been finished, the chimpanzee genome project has been launched to understand human evolution and genetic diseases. The sequences of chimpanzee chromosome 22 homologous to human chromosome 21 were completed, and then the Y chromosome of chimpanzee is being analyzed. Comparative analysis of human, chimpanzee and gorilla could provide the key for understanding of various human diseases and human origin. By detecting human specific-functional genes or mobile genetic elements (HERV, LINE, SINE) through primate research, we could understand what is human being\ulcorner gradually, For these comparative researches, we summarized fundamental knowledge of the feature, phylogeny and evolution of African great apes including humans.

유인원 무리를 이끄는 카리스마 넘치는 리더십을 가진 시저(앤디 서키스 분). 하지만 영화 <혹성탈출:종의 전쟁>의 주인공 시저는 인간이 아니다. 시저는 바이러스에 감염되어 지능이 높아진 침팬지일 뿐이다. 바이러스로 인해 침팬지가 인간과 같은 지능을 가질 가능성은 없지만 이를 단지 영화 속 상황일 뿐이라고 가볍게 넘길 수는 없다. 영화 <터미네이터>의 킬러 로봇처럼 지능을 가진 로봇의 출현을 앞두고 있기 때문이다. 두 영화 모두 인간 이외의 지능을 지닌 존재로 인해 인간은 그들과 전쟁을 벌이게 된다. 과연 지능이란 무엇이기에 인간 이외의 존재가 지능을 지니게 되는 것을 두려워하는 것일까?

To monitor the reproductive patterns of endangered common chimpanzee including annual reproductive cycle, amenorrhea, breeding season, and pregnancy diagnosis, Time-Resolved Fluorescence Immuno Assay (TR-FIA) was used to trace MRH (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). In result of this research, age was not the important factor in determining the reproduction capability in common chimpanzee; it was rather greatly influenced by the combination of various factors such as individual's fertilizing ability, presence of obstetrical diseases, the pattern of mating behavior, and the mental communication under the introduction of a mating partner. This research will play an important role in operating conservation project for common chimpanzees and can be extended also for shedding new light on understanding human menopause and obstetrical diseases.
