A Dye Tracer Study of Infiltration Pattern in a Residual Soil Developed from Granite (화강암 기원 잔적토양에서 염료추적자의 침투 유형에 관한 연구)

  • Understanding flow pattern of water and solute in subsurface is essential for the reduction and prevention of contamination of soil and groundwater and for the investigation and remediation of contaminated site. The objective of this study is to examine the infiltration pattern in a soil developed from the Jurassic granite using (Brilliant Blue FCF $C_{37}H_{34}N_{2}Na_{2}O_{9}S_{3}$), the nonfluorescent and nontoxic food dye. All image processing was conducted using geographic image processing software, ER Mapper, Version 6.2. The dye coverage was determined by counting the stained pixels in the photographs (80${\times}$80cm, 80TEX>${\times}$5cm) for the vertical and horizontal view. A homogeneous matrix flow occurred in the A horizon with weak, medium granular structure and fingering at the interface of finer-textured A horizon and coarser-textured C horizon. Pegmatitic vein originated from the granite and plant root in C horizon induced preferential flow.

  • The thesis is established on the basis of model tests on the central core dam. With variations in the upstream water level, the quantity of seepage in the downstream boundaries were obtained for each specific water level. Seepage alignment and equipotential lines to these occasions were also researched and measured. By making use of the resulting data from the experiment, the flow velocities and seepage quantity computed to the flow rate of each element of flownets by the Finite Element Method was compared with the values produced by experiments and approximate theoretical formula. Further to this, transitions of water level related thereto was also examined in the thesis. During the high water level, seepages shown by the experiment were larger than that of the F.E.M. Meanwhile, the in-between differences were found to be quite small during the low water level. In the flow rate of each element with which the flow-nets are constructed, flow velocities of the X and Z axis were faster on account of the variations in water level. Flow velocities of the Y axis were extremely small enough to be disregarded.

Preparation of Slate-Plastic Composite

  • Slate-plastic composite was prepared by impregnating methyl methacrylate monomer into the slate and subsequent curing the monomer either by gamma radiation or by thermal-catalytic method. Experiments were carried out to determine the polymerization rate and to investigate the properties of the composite. Significant improvements in flexural strength, water absorbability and acid resistance were observed in the products. Differences in properties between the composites obtained via two different methods were discussed as well as the cause of such results.

  • The main purpose of this study was to develop a useful method for analysing slope stability by seepage force. The stability of an embankment impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid rise change of reservoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient i. Seepage forces can combine with soil weights to improve stability or worsen it, depending on the direction in which the forces act ;n relation to the geometric cross section.

  • In this research, stainless steel and heat-shrinkage tube were used for new TDR sensing line to solve the problems of ordinary TDR system. The new TDR line improved the sensitivity of water content and endurance, and reduced the data noise. The saturation degree test and acryl model test were done by revised TDR sensor. From the results, without additional data filtering and quantitative analysis, the raw data were separated into 3 zones; saturated, unsaturated and dried zones easily. In addition, the revised TDR sensor was installed in large-scale embankment model to perform the seepage test. The raw data of the model tests showed the distributed seepage behaviors and separated zones clearly, which were almost the same tendencies as the lab test results.

  • A new two-fold interpenetrating two-dimensional (2D) Tb(III) metal-organic framework (MOF), [Tb(p-XBP4)2.5(H2O)2]·W(CN)8 (1), was prepared using a p-XBP4 (N,N'-p-phenylenedimethylenbis(pyridin-4-one)), Cs3[W(CN)8], and Tb(NO3)3·6H2O. The single crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that Tb-MOF exhibits a unique two-fold interpenetrating 2-D framework. It was also characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and single and powder X-ray diffraction. To probe the molecular magnetic behavior, the magnetic properties of Tb-MOF were investigated by direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) magnetic susceptibilities measurements and discussed.

  • A complete electromagnetic simulation for a ground-penetrating radar(GPR) is implemented by employing 3-dimensional dispersive finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. The presented simulation model includes the cavity-backed bow-tie antennas, which are terminated by resistors. And an equivalent cirvuit consisting of the input impedance of the antenna and the characteristic impedance of the feed line is used to calculate the response in the receiving antenna. Actual emasurements of a GPR system including our manufactured bow-tie antenna pair are performed just above dry sand contained in a PVC tank. It is confirmed that the FDTD simulation results agree well with the actual measurement data.

  • Through the numerical analysis of the capillary pressure-based Richards equation with and without the effect of the capillary hysteresis under the boundary condition having an antecedent rainfall. the moving tendency of the wetting front, the redistribution of the moisture content, infiltration rate, cumulative infiltration etc, were computed. The effect of the capillary hysteresis cannot be neglected in analyzing an unsaturated flow, and the more accurate results may be obtained by the consideration of the hysteresis effect. If the effect of the hysteresis cannot be considered, the analysis by the use of the main wetting curve may give more reliable result than that of the main drying curve.

  • The texture changes of potato of the variety ‘Namjack’ were determined as a function of temperature and boiling time by a puncture test with Universal Testing Machine. Apart from texture measurement, heat penetration test and sensory evaluation were carried out. Textural softening during cocking could be expressed by the puncture work and was followed first order kinetics. The Z-value for texture changes was $19.9^{\circ}C$. The cook value in equivalent minutes at $100^{\circ}C$ to get a boiled potatoes was 7 min. Mechanically the boiled product could be regarded as cooked when the final puncture work reduced to the equilibrium value, approximately 6/100 of the initial value.
