Effect of Carbon Potential on the Carbide Formation and Pitting Fatigue Strength of Supercarburized Steel (고농도 침탄강의 탄화물 형성과 피팅 피로강도에 미치는 탄소 포텐셜의 영향)

  • In the present work, we investigated the effects of the carbon potential on the formation of carbide at the carburized surface and anti-pitting fatigue strength in the supercarburized steels. Two low carbon steels with different Cr concentrations were adopted and the repeated supercarburizing treatment carried out with the different carbon potential conditions. The microstructure and carbides at the supercarburized surface were observed by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The microhardness test was performed and the hardness distribution and the effective case depth at the supercarburized surface were discussed. The roller pitting fatigue test was carried out and the fatigue strength was evaluated with different the carbon potential conditions. The microstructure of the fatigue specimen surface was observed by means of scanning electron microscope and scanning transmission electron microscope. Depending on the chemical composition of the steels and the carbon potential condition, the resistance of temper softening and pitting failure was influenced due to the carbide distribution and the formation of coarse network carbide. Thus, it was confirmed that the control of the carbide formation is a key factor to improve the anti-pitting fatigue strength in the supercarburized steels.

Effect of $CO_2$ Content on the Growth and Corrosion Characteristics of the Compound Layers in Gaseous Nitrocarburized Carbon Steels (가스 질화침탄처리한 탄소강의 화합물층 성장 및 부식특성에 미치는 $CO_2$함량의 영향)

  • This study has been performed to investigate the effect of $CO_2$ content on the growth characteristics of the compound layer, porous layer and corrosion characteristics of carbon steels after gaseous nitrocarburizing in $70%-NH_3-CO_2-N_2$ at $580^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 hrs. The results obtained from the experiment were the thickness of the compound and porous layers increased with increasing $CO_2$ contents. At the same fixed gas composition the thickness of the compound and porous layer increased with increasing carbon content of the specimens. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that compound layer was mainly consisted of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ as the increased with $CO_2$ contents in atmosphere, compound layer was chiefly consisted of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase. With increasing $CO_2$ content and total flow rate in gaseous nitrocarburizing, the amount of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase in the compound layer was increased. The current density of passivity decreased with increasing $CO_2$ content due to the development of porous layer at the out most surface of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$.

Fatigue Analysis of Reduction Gears Unit in Rolling Stock Considering Operating Characteristics (운행특성을 고려한 철도차량 감속기의 피로해석)

  • To assure the safety of rolling stock, it is important to perform the fatigue analysis of reduction gear unit in rolling stock considering a variation of velocity and traction motor capability. This paper presents fatigue analysis of the damage of reduction gear unit of railway vehicle under variable amplitude loading(VAL) based on quasi-static fatigue analysis using finite element model and linear Miner's rule. The VAL for the simulation was constructed from the tractive effort curve and train run curves of railway vehicle under commercial operation condition using MSC.ADAMS dynamic analysis. The finite element model for evaluating the carburizing effect on the gear surface was used for predicting the fatigue life of the middle gear based on strain-life based approach. The results showed that the frequent high starting torque due to a quick start as well as increasing numbers of stops at station would decrease the fatigue life of reduction gear unit.

  • Recently, high carbon steel has become essential not only for shipbuilding parts, but also mass production. Its surface has been treated by carburizing, nitriding and induction hardening, but these existing treatments cause considerable deformation and increase the expense of postprocessing after treatment; furthermore, these treatments cannot be easily applied to parts that requiring the hardening of only a certain section. This is because the treatment cannot heat the material homogeneously, nor can it heat all of it. Laser surface treatment was developed to overcome these disadvantages, and when the laser beam is irradiated on the surface and laser speed is appropriate, the laser focal position is rapidly heated and the thermal energy of surface penetrates the material after irradiation, finally imbuing it with a new mechanical characteristic by the process of self-quenching. This research estimates the material characteristic after efficient and functional surface treatment using HPDL, which is more efficient than the existing CW Nd:YAG laser heat source. To estimate, microstructural changes and hardness characteristics of two parts (the surface treatment part, and parental material) are observed with the change of laser beam speed and surface temperature.

Metallic Structure of Iron Relics of Chosun Dynasty Excavated from Gangsun Tower, Chengpyeong Temple (청평사 강선루 출토 조선시대 철제유물의 금속조직에 대하여)

  • In the course of examining the micro structure of Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead, a relics of the 16th or 17th of Chosun Dynasty unearthed at near Gangsun-tower, Chengpyeong temple. Collected un-eroded samples from the relics were looked into the metallic structure through optical metallography. Non-metallic inclusions were-analysed by SEM and EDS. The micro structure examination and SEM-SDS analysis revealed that Iron chisel and Iron arrowhead had been produced from the sponge iron close to pure iron made by low temperature reducing in a solid and then the surface carbon content was increased by carburizing treatment. It was also found that Iron chisel had been hardened through the repetitive processes of quench hardening and heat treatment, after increasing carbon content to a certain level. Up to now, there have been a number of studies in the domestic academia which were studied mainly on the structure of metallic relics in the period of the Three Kingdoms or before. Although this research was limited in type and number of the relics, it turned out to be interesting in that it revealed the 16th or 17th century way of processing iron, even in fragments. It is thought to be fruitful that iron had been made even in the Chosun Dynasty from the sponge iron.

Improvement of Microstructure and Creep Properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by Plasma Carburization (Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 미세조직 및 크리프 특성에 미치는 플라즈마 침탄 처리의 영향)

  • In order to improve the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, plasma carburization treatment was newly carried out without consumption of its good specific strength and fatigue life over the temperature. Effect of the plasma carburization was analyzed and compared with the non-treated alloy by microstructural observation, structure characterization and mechanical test. The plasma treated alloy formed a carburized layer of about $150{\mu}m$ in depth from the surface, where a fine and hard particles of TiC and $V_4C_3$ were homogeneously dispersed through the layer. The steady-static creep behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, using the constant stress creep tester, were investigated over the temperature range of $510{\sim}550^{\circ}C$(0.42~0.44Tm) and the stress range of 200~275 MPa. Stress exponent(n) was decreased from 9.32 of non-treatment specimen to 8.95 of carburized, however, the activation energy(Q) increased from 238 to 250 kJ/mol with the same condition as indicated above. From the above results, it can be concluded that the static creep deformation for Ti-6Al-4V alloy was controlled by the dislocation climb over the ranges of the experimental conditions.

A Study on the Corrosion Properties and Microstructure of the Nitrocarburized and Oxidized Low Carbon Steel according to the Treatment Atmospheres (저탄소강의 질화침탄과 산화처리시 분위기 변화에 따른 조직 및 부식특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nitrocarburizing was carried out with various $CH_4$ gas composition with 4 torr gas pressure at $570^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and post oxidation was carried out with 100% $O_2$ gas atmosphere with 4 torr at different temperatures for various time. In the case of plasma nitrocarburizing, It is that the ratio of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N, C) and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N), which comprise the compound layer phase, depend on concentrations of $N_2$ gas and $CH_4$ such that when the concentration of $N_2$ and $CH_4$ increased, the ratio of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N) decreased, but the ratio of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N, C) increased. The thickness of compound layer consistently increased as gas concentration increased regardless of $N_2$ and $CH_4$ expect when the concentration of $CH_4$ was 3.5 volume%, it decreased insignificantly. When oxidizing for 15min in the temperature range of $460{\sim}570{^\circ}C$, the study found small amount of $Fe_3O_4$ at the temperature of $460{^\circ}C$ and also found that amounts of $Fe_2O_3$. and $Fe_3O_4$ on the surface and amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(C, N) in the compound layer increased as the increased over $460^{\circ}C$, but the thickness of the compound layer decreased. Corrosion resistance was influenced by oxidation times and temperature.

Computational Simulation of Carburizing and Quenching Processes of a Low Alloy Steel Gear (저합금강 기어의 침탄 및 소입 공정에 대한 전산모사)

  • The aim of the present study was to predict the variations in microstructure and deformation occurring during gas carburizing and quenching processes of a SCM420H planetary gear in a real production environment using the finite element method (FEM). The motivation for the present study came from the fact that previous FEM simulations have a limitation of the application to the real heat treatment process because they were performed with material properties provided by commercial programs and heat transfer coefficients (HTC) measured from laboratory conditions. Therefore, for the present simulation, many experimentally measured material properties were employed; phase transformation kinetics, thermal expansion coefficients, heat capacity, heat conductivity and HTC. Particularly, the HTCs were obtained by converting the cooling curves measured with a STS304 gear without phase transformations using an oil bath with an agitator in a real heat treatment factory. The FEM simulation was successfully conducted using the aforementioned material properties and HTC, and then the predicted results were well verified with experimental data, such as the cooling rate, microstructure, hardness profile and distortion.

Carbothermal Reduction of Spray Dried Titanium-Cobalt-Oxygen Based Oxide Powder by Solid Carbon (분무건조법에 의해 제조된 Ti-Co-O계 산화물 분말의 고체 탄소에 의한 환원/침탄)

  • In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fined TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. The synthesized titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder has a mixture of $TiO_2$ and $CoTiO_3$. This oxide powder was transformed to a mixed state of titanium car-bide and cobalt by solid carbon through four steps of carbothermal reduction steps with increasing temperature; reduction of $CoTiO_3$ to $TiO_2$ and Co, reduction of $TiO_2$, to the magneli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3), reduction of the mag-neli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3) to the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases, and reduction and carburization of the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases to titanium carbide.

Metallurgical Analysis of Iron Artifacts Excavated from the Yeongsan River Basin (영산강유역 출토 철기유물의 미세조직 분석)

  • Around Yeongsan river basin, there are Yeongkwang Gundong, Muan Inpyeong Tombs, Muu Gusan-ri Tombs and Hampyeong Guksan remain from which a lot of iron artifacts were excavated. Among them, 6 iron artifacts were chosen, and their microstructures were analyzed. As a result, Iron artifacts were produced sponge iron by the low temperature reduction process and a part of microstructure have the possibility that steel made by decarburizing. And also, by tempering the parts which need high strength, the iron artifacts had high strength and by distributing the weakness of the tempered structure to the nearby untempered parts, their breaking was prevented and they had the durability. These skills were used then. Especially these skills were found to be used in the 2nd century by high skilled people because an iron axe excavated at Yeongkwang Gundong of 2nd century by the historical record showed that the skill was used. Also microstructures were found to show the possibility that the iron technology was inherited to the late 5th century. When producing iron artifacts made of sponge iron containing small amount of carbon, that was made by the production process repeating molding, carburizing, heat treatment and hammering.
