  • In recent decades, the world has entered a new era in terms of the number and variety of biological invasions, due to economic progress and transportation efficiency. Biological invasion is becoming more likely as demand for foreign fresh foods and decorative goods grows. Alien species continue to infiltrate Korea in a variety of ways, and disturb on the insect fauna of Korea. The goal of plant quarantine is to decrease the economic impact of alien pests on the agriculture and forestry industries. In this study, we focused on insects found in imported cut flowers from 1996 to 2020 using pest information system. Overall, 147,160 cut flowers (159 items) were imported into Korea from 69 countries during this time period. Throughout this time, 467 species of insects were found in all imported cut flowers to Korea, total 13,757 detections. They were classified as provisional regulated pests in 273 species, quarantine managed pests in 78 species, and non-quarantine pests in 118 species. Thysanoptera and Hemiptera had the largest number of alien insect detections (more than 80% of the alien insects) among the nine orders. The outcomes of this study have highlighted the need for ongoing inspection activities targeted at preventing quarantine alien pests from entering or incursion in Korea.

  • The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Say), attacking a sycamore tree, Platatanus orientalis L., was first found in Korea, and was widely distributed in the central part of the country. The adult was milky white in color and 3.0-3.2 mm long, and the matured nymph was black. Heavily infested trees appear yellowish white as a result of feeding by the nymphs on the under surface of leaves.

  • Tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius) is distributed over the tropical and temperate areas. It is a polyphagous pest attacking to various plant and causes the pain to the people doing outdoor work. So it is known for a hygienic pest to human being, especially the people doing outdoor activities. It can cause severe pain to human, even with just a bite. Of particular concern is the possibility of its settlement in this country, if it invade to the farmlands and/or forests of Jeju Island and southern part in Korea. It is listed as a regulated pest in Plant Quarantine Act of Korea. This ant is usually imported through a ship and early settled in the port area where it is already distributed. Recently its distribution is rapidly spreading into Southeast Asia and southern part of China. In Korea, it was detected the one time in 1990s, but was detected the ten times from 2000 to 2006 by an imported plant quarantine process. Therefore, we would like to provide some information on the species, including morphology, distribution, host plant, damaged symptom and its general bionomics, which will be useful data for plant quarantine process and control.

  • The American serpentine leafminer (ASL), Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess), was fist found from a vinyl house planting gerbera in Kwangju area on January 26, 1994. To learn its distribution and damage pattern on crop plants, a nationwide survey was carried out at 293 vinyl houses from 25 cities/counties in six provinces. Its damage was found at 22 vinyl houses in Kwangju and Chinju areas. The range of leaves damaged by the ASL was 5-100% on gerbera, 40-70% on chrysanthemum, 20% on cherry-tomato, and 5-20% on celery. Host crop plants included gerbera, chrysanthemum, celery, cherry-tomato, watermelon, and pumpkin.

  • During 15 months from 13. Jul. 2018 to 29. Oct. 2019, we monitored on the hitchhiker insect pests from a total of 306 foreign vessels entering into Korea. As the results, a total of 805 samples of the hitchhiker insects were collected using simply collecting method by hands and identified as 379 species of 78 families under 12 orders on the basis of integrative species identification. Among them, 42 species (67 individuals) of 21 families under seven orders were detected as not-distributed species in South Korea. Of the 42 not-distributed species, seven species were multiply detected in 2018 and 2019, and two species, Erthesina fullo (Pentatomidae, Hemiptera) and Tessaratoma papilosa (Tessaratomidae, Hemiptera) were discovered as regulated insect pest. Therefore, we reported on the 42 not-distributed species in South Korea with the data sheets for the establishment of a monitoring plan on the not-distributed species and the risk assessments on invasive or invasive likelihood species.

  • We monitored on the hitchhiker insect pests from a total of 112 foreign vessels entering into Korea during 109 days from 1. Jun. to 17. Sep. in 2018. As the results, a total of 336 samples of the hitchhiker insects were collected using simply collecting method by hands, one of interception method and identified as 159 species of 47 families under nine orders on the basis of integrative species identification. Among them, 14 species of nine families under three orders were detected as undistributed species in South Korea. We reported on the 14 undistributed species in South Korea with the data sheets for the risk assessments on invasive or invasive likelihood species. Also, we suggested and used the term 'not-distributed species' for avoiding confusion with 'unrecorded species', 'unreported species', or 'new reported species'.
