  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of malocclusion on the self-esteem of female university students. Methods: The subjects were composed of 67 female university students who showed Class 1 molar relation, no missing or supernumerary teeth and has had no orthodontic treatment experience. Each subject was evaluated with Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale to measure the level of self-esteem and also evaluated the degree of anterior crowding and lip protrusion through model analysis and cephalometric soft tissue profile analysis. Results: The results showed that a protrusive profile and crowding of upper anterior teeth had significant reducing effects on the level of self-esteem. The protrusion and crowding groups showed no significant differences in self-esteem between groups. Conclusions: Malocclusion had significant negative effects on the self-esteem of female university students. Further research to investigate the negative psychological influence of malocclusion and the education of lay people about this influence is necessary.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment on the self-esteem of adolescents. Methods: The subjects were composed of 3509 female middle school students. Each subject was evaluated with Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale to measure the level of self-esteem and also evaluated the degree of crowding and soft tissue profile. Results: Results showed that protrusion of lip area had no effects on self-esteem but crowding of upper anterior teeth had significant effects. The fixed orthodontic treatment group and the removable orthodontic treatment group reported no significant difference in self-esteem from the no orthodontic treatment experience group, but the debonding group showed significantly higher Self-esteem index. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that anterior teeth alignment has influence on the self-esteem of female adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the root resolution and repair pattern of human teeth according to the force magnitude, direction and duration during the initial leveling and alignment phase. 40gms to 500gms of force applied to the 37 experimental teeth with duration of 3 weeks to 7 months. Then, the experimental teeth were extracted. 13 control teeth were extracted without treatment. The results are as follows: 1. $59.5\%$ of 37 teeth exhibited root resorption. The initial resorption site was visible at the apex within 3 weeks with 100 gms samples, and the initial repair site was visible at the apex within 3 months with 400 gms samples. 2. Number of resorbed teeth increased with the duration of the force. 3. The depth of the resorption increased with the magnitude of the force. 4. The areas of resorbed root corresponded with the loading pattern. 5. The areas of resorbed root were highly correlated with the magnitude of the force. The result of this study suggest that root resorption could occur during the initial leveling and alignment phase, These initial injuries are all small and insignificant. It is the extensive type of apical root resolution that must be regarded as deleterious to the function and stability of the tooth moved. During the initial leveling and alignment phase lighter force of the interrupted type and short treatment period would be favorable with regard to avoidance of root resorption and repair of resorbed root surface.

  • Deep caries may induce pulpitis and the pulpal tissue interacts with microbial invasion. The immune response to protect the pulpal tissue can be mediated by cellular signal molecules produced by the pulpal cells. The understanding of these processes is important to find future therapeutic method for the diseased pulp. The pulp tissue from sound teeth was set as control group (n=30) and the pulp tissue from decayed teeth was set as test group (n=30). Total RNA was extracted from the pulp of each group and it was used for cDNA microarray and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). The expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ was studied by immunohistochemistry. The results were as follows: 1. cDNA microarray analysis identified 520 genes with 6-fold or greater difference in expression level with 143 genes more abundant in health and 377 genes more abundant in disease. 2. The RT-PCR analysis was done for randomly selected 14 genes and the results supported the result of cDNA microarray assay. 3. TGF-${\beta}1$ was highly expressed in the carious pulp and it was found in odontoblast by immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, many cytokines were found to be significantly changed their expression in the diseased pulp(/M/>1.6).

  • Transposition is a unique and extreme form of ectopic eruption where a tooth develops and erupts in a position, normally occupied by an adjacent tooth. Generally, three treatment options are available when the maxillary canine and first premolar are transposed. In the first treatment option, the transposed position of the teeth can be maintained such that the first premolar is moved to the position of the canine. Second, extraction of the maxillary first premolar can be considered. Third, the position of the transposed teeth can be corrected such that their normal positions in the arch are restored. Factors that should be considered in treatment modality decision include function, occlusion, periodontal support, treatment time, patient cooperation, and esthetic demands. This report describes cases of maxillary canine-premolar transposition treated with each of the three aforementioned treatment options. In the first case, transposed teeth were arranged in their transposed position. The second case was an extraction case. In the third case, orthodontic treatment and surgical repositioning were conducted.

  • Recently, researches to develop phased array ultrasonic examination techniques are proceeded to diagnose dental caries and the status of surgical operation of dental implant. Sound field analysis of phased array ultrasonic transducers were carried out in order to characterizing the ultrasonic phased array beams. The sound field of ultrasonic radiation was calculated for the sample called "gypsum-improved stone" with the similar characteristics of dental materials. Industrial phased array ultrasonic devices were utilized for the insptriion of the artificial flaws machined in the gypsum-improved stone. Dental implants were made at the pig jaw bone and defect images were confirmed for the dental implants.
