This study was carried out in order to find out the pattern of the root resorption following maxillary incisor retraction after maxillary 1st bicuspid extration in maxillary protrusion patients. For this study, thirty two patient who received orthodontic treatment were chosen. The results were as follows; 1. Of the total 192 teeth, 61 teeth(31.77%) showed no apical root loss, 64 teeth(33.33%) fell into the class "slight", 46 teeth(23.96%) fell into the class "moderate". Only 21 teeth(10.94%) were classified as "excessive". 2. No correlation was noted between the amount of apical root loss and the types of tooth movement of the maxillary central incisors. 3. The patients who were treated with standard brackets had more changes in tooth axis and less movement of root apexes, but the patients with straight brackets had less changes in tooth axis and more movement of root apexes. 4. Comparing the degree of root resorption between bracket types, patients who had used standard brackets showed more apical root loss than patients who had used straight brackets. 5. The most frequent degree of root resorption observed in standard bracket patients was second degree, followed by first degree and third degree. The most frequent degree of root resorption observed in straight bracket patients was zero degree, followed by first, second degree and third degree.

For this research 20 supernumerary teeth impacted in the maxillary anterior have been extracted and pulp cells have been collected from them. From the collected pulp cells, total of 17 (10 males, 7 females) have been selected as subjects. From this research, the run-time of successive culture of the cell from tooth number pulp tissue was $2.91{\pm}0.29$ days. From the gathering of cells from the initial pulp tissue until gaining 80% confluency took $4.53{\pm}0.94$ which was the longest. The following successive cultures took $2.73{\pm}0.32$ days. Average runtime for female was $2.81{\pm}0.27$ days whereas male had average runtime of $2.98{\pm}0.29$ days. Average run-time for inversion was $2.94{\pm}0.30$ days and for normal location, $2.80{\pm}0.20$ days. Average runtime was $2.92{\pm}0.31$ days and other forms took $2.88{\pm}0.22$ days. In the future, follow up research would be needed to evaluate the efficiency of the cells collected from the initial passage and the latter passage as stem-cells and taking into consideration the less than 3 days'time for the subculture, it could be concluded that the research efficiency and fast cultivation would be sufficiently effective.

During orthodontic treatment, formation of white spot lesions (WSLs) around brackets has long been recognized as a potential risk. This study performed to investigate effect of preventing enamel demineralization and remineralization by application of fluoride-containing orthodontic primer. Fifty extracted bovine incisors teeth were randomly allocated to 3 groups: (I) Non-preparation specimens, (II) Application of Light Bond$^{TM}$ as fluoride containing orthodontic primer, (III) Application of Transbond$^{TM}$ XT Primer as traditional orthodontic primer without fluoride. Each group is demineralized under artificial carious solution. The demineralization pattern was evaluated using a Q-ray view, Vickers hardness test and polarized light microscope. The remained primer was calculated as 35 - 50%. The highest surface microhardness was shown on Light Bond$^{TM}$ surface. There were statistically significant differences in Vickers microhardness number between adjacent areas of Light Bond$^{TM}$ and non-prepared area. There was almost no demineralization of the enamel surface under the Light Bond$^{TM}$. At the adjacent site of Light Bond$^{TM}$, the shallow caries pattern and remineralization appearance were also observed. These results suggest that the use of fluoride-containing primers may be useful for bracket attachment to reduce enamel demineralization during orthodontic treatment.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between the treatment duration and cephalometric measurements and the PAR index in Class I malocclusion patients. In 100 Class I malocclusion patients, PAR score and cephalometric measurements were taken from study model and cephalometric radiographs and analyzed statistically. The results of this study were obtained as follows: 1. treatment duration was correlated with extraction and pre PAR index. 2. ANB, FMA, FMIA and IMPA exhibited positive correlation between pre PAR index and pretreatment cephalometric measurements. 3. $\underline{1}$ to FP exhibited positive correlation between post PAR index and posttreatment cephalometric measurements, and $\overline{1}$ to FP exhibited negative correlation. 4. $\underline{1}$ to SN, IIA and $\overline{1}$ to FP exhibited positive correlation between ${\%}\;PAR$ reduction and the change of cephalometric measurements and FMA FMIA, WITS and UL exhibited negative correlation. The results of this study indicate that PAR index taken from study model relate with items concerned with upper and lower incisors, and there are the tendency that pretreatment PAR index are larger in the patients with large Am value and hyperdivergent face.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate hard and soft tissue changes following the subapical osteotomy in bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion patients requiring maximal retraction adult female patients was selected. Surgical procedures were performed by the same surgeon, anterior subapical osteotomy techniques were employed on the maxilla and cephalometric radiograms were traced and superimposed using the best-fit method and two reference The results were as follows 1. The bodily movement of the maxillary anterior segment was achieved in a posterior moved posteriorly with a slight correction of the lower incisors. 2. The horizontal soft tissue measurements changed significantly after treatment, but Nt and Sn vertical soft tissue measurements indicated that Ls moved inferiorly and Li superiorly. 3. The correlation between hard and soft tissue changes indicated that ${\Delta}HId/{\Delta}HLi,\;{\Delta}HId/{\Delta}LL-Eline,\;{\Delta}Hpt.B/{\Delta}HILS,\;and\;{\Delta}UI-FH/{\Delta}NL$ were significant. 4. More lower lip relative to upper lip retraction was demonstrated in relation to Rickett's E-line. The ratio between upper lip displacement was $50\%$, and between the lower incisor and lower lip displacement was $60\%$. We conclude from the results that the anterior subapical osteotomy is an efficient treatment severe dentoalveolar protrusion and desire rapid results.
Objective: Many studies have carried out research on comparisons between laser etching and conventional etching systems to investigate methods of reinforcing shear bond strength. The purposes of this study were to assess the efficiency of bonding with erbium, chromium doped: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser etching combined with the conventional etching technique. Methods: Sixty-four sound premolars, extracted for orthodontic purposes, were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated in the following manner. First group, conventional etching of 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds (control); second group, 1.5 W laser etching for 10 seconds followed by conventional etching; third group, conventional etching followed by 1.5 W laser etching; fourth group, 1.5 W laser etching for 15 seconds only. We assessed the shear bond strength, the surface characteristics, and the adhesive remnant index scores between all groups. Results: Experimental groups showed higher shear bond strength than the control group. But no statistically significant differences were found between the second and third groups. Adhesive remnant scores were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test, and no statistically significant differences were found between all groups. Conclusions: To obtain maximum shear bonding strength, a combined technique of Er,Cr:YSGG and 37% phosphoric acid is useful even though it may be inconvenient.

Incidence of tooth impaction varies from 5.6 to 18.8% of the population. Failure of eruption of the first and second permanent molars is rare; the prevalence in the normal population is 0.01% in case of the first permanent molar, and 0.06% in case of the second permanent molar. Permanent molars are particularly important for providing sufficient occlusal support and co-ordinating facial growth. Failure of eruption of permanent molars may result in various complications such as decrease in vertical dimension, posterior open bite, extrusion of antagonistic teeth, resorption and inclination of adjacent teeth, formation of cyst and so on. Treatment options of impacted teeth are periodic observation, surgical exposure, surgical exposure with subluxation, orthodontic relocation, and surgical extraction before prosthetic treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, because delayed treatment induces various problems such as decreased spontaneous eruptive force, decreased successful percentage, increased treatment period, increased various complications. Prevalence of the failure of mandibular first molars is rare but eruptive guidance before extraction of impacted teeth is necessary due to importance of permanent molars. We reported two cases of surgical exposure of impacted mandibular first molar. In these cases, we could observe different result of the impacted mandibular first molar after surgical exposure.

Ectopic eruption means the eruption of the tooth in an abnormal position due to multiple factors, which found most frequently in maxillary fist permanent molars, mandibular lateral incisors and maxillary permanent canines. Ectopic eruption of the maxillary first permanent molar occurs when the molar erupts with a more mesial angulation than normal, and locks itself in an atypical resorption on the distobuccal root of the second primary molar. The maxillary first permanent molar plays important roles for mastication and occlusion, so ectopically erupted maxillary first permanent molars should be relocated into proper position. Treatment options are separation by insertion of the brass wire or elastic rings, preparation of distal aspect of the maxillary second primary molar, using fixed or removable appliance with finger spring, and placement of space maintainer or space regainer after extraction of the maxillary second primary molar. We report three cases treated of ectopically erupted maxillary first permanent molar by re-setting of stainless steel crowns, placement of brass wire and using active plate. We could find out distal movement of maxillary first permanent molars into proper position and normal occlusion.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to find changes in the occlusal plane related to different vertical facial patterns and suggest treatment goals and conduct possible treatment mechanisms. Methods: 60 adult patients (28 males, 32 females) who had been diagnosed as Class 1 skeletal malocclusion and treated without extraction were selected. Patients were divided into three groups; short face type (group 1), average face type (group 2) and long face type (group 3), using the data on normal occlusion of Korean adults. Results: The results were achieved by analyzing cephalometric tracings of each group at pre-treatment, end-treatment and post-treatment (about 1 year recall check). The inclination of the occlusion plane tends to gradually increase as the face becomes longer In group 1, COP-X, FOP-X, L6/L1, MP-L6 were significantly decreased, and L1-FOP was significantly increased during the retention period (T3-T2). Group 2 showed no significant change, In group 3, FOP-X was significantly increased during the retention period (T3-T2). During the retention period, FOP-X showed significant change among each group, especially between group 1 and group 3. Conclusion: These results suggest that changes of occlusal plane inclination according to facial vertical pattern need to be considered during the retention period for intrusion, extrusion, and incisor overbite.
The present study has been carried out to investigate the effect of fluoride toxicity on the morphology as well as inorganic chemical constituents of rat teeth. Rats were administered sodium fluoride at dose of 0 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm and 300 ppm at the beginning of pregnancy. Animals were perfused intravascularly with glutaraldehyde and the incisors were removed. Changes in the protein composition of the secretory and maturation enamel were investigated using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS PAGE). And the enamel surface of incisors was examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Changes of protein quantities were found significantly in high levels fluoride administration for experimental groups compared with control. The SDS PAGE analysis demonstrated as follows In control group, secretory phase enamel protein, amelogenins, was detected more quantities than experimental group. The enamelin, presence in maturation phase enamel , showed more quantifies than control enamel with an increasing fluoride concentration in the drinking water. Also, the scanning electron micrographic data showed hypoplastic, tough, uneven, pitted and cracked enamel surfaces covered with granular deposits as a result of excessive intake of fluoride. From these results we conclude that high dose of fluoride administration leads to severe structural alterations on the enamel surface and these structural changes could be through defective mineralization.
