It is well known that exercise may have a positive effects on dementia. However, most of dementia-related studies were performed about symptom care, diverse treatment and drug treatment. Although regular physical exercise plays an important role of brain function and dementia prevention, only a few research studies showed the effect of physical exercise on dementia and brain function. This study is to investigate about the sleep-related factors (melatonin, serotonin), dementia-related factors (BDNF, beta-amyloid, IGF-1, Irisin, GLUT) with physical exercise. This study revealed that Myokine (Irisin, IGF-1), GLUT and Melatonin is an important factors to improve or sometimes delay the symptoms of dementia through BDNF activation following endurance exercise. However, these results were controversal following the various kinds of exercise type, mode, duration and exercise intensity and so forth. Therefore, further mechanism study about exercise and dementia is urgently needed in this area.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of participating in an aerobic exercise program three days a week and 50 minutes a day on dementia related factors and cognitive function in elderly women with mild dementia. For this, among 17 elderly women aged 65 and above, 10 elderly women were randomly assigned to the experimental group and 7 elderly wonmen to the control group. As a result of comparative analysis, conclusions were drawn as follows: There was a significant difference (p<.05) in the DHEA-s change between the two groups according to whether or not the aerobic exercise program was performed. Changes in cognitive function did not show any significant difference in the interaction effects of group, period, period${\times}$group. These results suggest that the aerobic exercise program did not show statistically significant effects on the dementia related factors and cognitive function changes of the elderly women with mild dementia. The reason for this is that the followings should be analyzed in more detail, but the lack of control on the daily life (diet) of the study subjects, which was considered as a limitation in this study, seems to be the biggest cause. Based on the results of this study, we hope that this study will be used as a basic data for improving the quality of dementia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise on dementia, depression, and cognitive function in elderly women. This study subject were 28 elderly female volunteers, aged 76-83 years and they divided into the exercise group(n=14) and control group(n=14). The combined exercise included the elastic band exercise and aquarobics performed 3 times per week for 90 minutes during 16 weeks. The exercise intensity was set at RPE 10-11 for 1 week to 4 weeks, RPE 11-14 for 5 weeks to 16 weeks, respectively. The test data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA, paired t-test, and independent t-test. The alpha level of .05 was set for all tests of significance. The findings of this study were as follows; ${\beta}-amyloid$ and depression were significantly decreased and DHEAs and cognitive function were significantly increased than control group. In conclusion, regular and continuous combined exercise was effective for improving dementia and had a positive effect on depression and cognitive function in elderly women.
This study was conducted on elderly women in their 60s and 70s, and the results of the study were as follows when line dancing for 60 minuctes every three times a week for 12 weeks on dementia and aging-related hormones. After 12 weeks of line dancing programs, BDNF, DHEA-s, and estrogen increased, but no statistically significant differences with control groups emerged. In addition, after 12 weeks of line dancing, Apolipoprotein B decreased in line dancing group but showed no statistically significant difference from control group. Although significant differences between groups were not identified in the results of this study, positive effects on preventing and aging of dementia were identified in the group applying the line dance program, and further studies considering the new target and hign kinetic strength, frequency, time, and athletic genre are needed to identify the distinct effects of line dancing in the future.

This study was undertaken to determine the correlation between β-amyloid, serum lipid levels, and cognitive function in the elderly with mild Alzheimer's dementia. The study was conducted in December 2018, enrolling 45 elderly people with mild Alzheimer's disease. Blood analysis measured the β-amyloid and serum lipid levels, and cognitive function was measured using MMSE-K. The correlation between β-amyloid, serum lipid levels and cognitive function was determined using Pearson's correlation analysis. A significantly negative correlation was observed between the β-amyloid level and cognitive function (p<0.05). Furthermore, serum lipid levels and cognitive function also revealed a significantly negative correlation between TC and LDL levels (p<0.05). These results indicate that increasing levels of β-amyloid, TC, and LDL augments a negative correlation that decreases the cognitive function, signifying that management of pathologic factors related to dementia is important for the prevention and improvement of cognitive function in dementia patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the health-related quality of life of caregivers for demented elders. Method: The subjects of this study were 170 pairs of demented elders and their caregivers. Socio-demographic characteristics of the demented elders and the caregivers, Barthel index and SF-36 were used in this study. Data analysis procedure included t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The score of overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was 288.62 in norm-based scoring. The major factors that affect HRQoL of the demented elders' caregivers were burden, the age of the caregiver, ADL and gender of the demented elder, and these factors explained 34.5% of HRQoL. Conclusion: The factors significantly affecting the caregivers' HRQoL were burden, the age of the caregiver and ADL. The effective social support system should be considered in respective nursing interventions to decrease the level of burden and to increase HRQoL in demented elders' caregivers. Further studies and efforts will be needed to investigate preceding factors of burden and HRQoL.
Cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease are serious social problems associated with the rising elderly population in Korea. 1,2,3,4,6-Penta-O-galloyl-β-ᴅ-glucopyranose (PGG) is a gallotannin isolated from medicinal plants such as Rhus chinensis. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of PGG on biomarkers related to cognitive function in human neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells. Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity is considered to be one of the main therapeutic strategies. PGG inhibited AChE activity in the test tube as well as in SK-N-SH cells. In addition, PGG induced protein and mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a mammalian neurotrophin that plays major roles in the development, maintenance, repair, and survival of neuronal populations. As one of the underlying molecular mechanisms that induce BDNF expression, PGG induced the activation of Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII)-cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) pathway. In conclusion, PGG may be an useful material for improving cognitive function.

This study aimed to determine whether double-processed ginseng berry extract (PGBC) could improve learning and memory in an $A\hat{a}42$-induced Alzheimer's mouse model. Passive avoidance test (PAT) and Morris water-maze test (MWMT) were performed after mice were treated with PGBC, followed by acetylcholine (ACh) measurement and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) detection for brain damage. Furthermore, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) expression were analyzed using Ellman's and qPCR assays, respectively. Results demonstrated that PGBC contained a high amount of ginsenosides (Re, Rd, and Rg3), which are responsible for the clearance of $A{\hat{a}} 42$. They also helped to significantly improve PAT and MWMT performance in the $A{\hat{a}} 42-induced$ Alzheimer's mouse model when compared to the normal group. Interestingly, ACh and ChAT were remarkably upregulated and AChE activities were significantly inhibited, suggesting PGBC to be a palliative adjuvant for treating Alzheimer's disease. Altogether, PGBC was found to play a positive role in improving cognitive abilities. Thus, it could be a new alternative solution for alleviating Alzheimer's disease symptoms.
Objectives: This study aimed to confirm the association between cognitive function and oral health status in the elderly. Methods: In this study, 5,794 respondents, aged 55 or older, who had participated in the 7th aging research panel survey were used. Statistical analyses were performed using a complex samples cross-tabulation analysis, complex samples general linear model, and a complex sample multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: After analyzing the cognitive function of the elderly according to their oral health conditions, it was found that suspicions of dementia (19.6%) and cognitive function decline (25.9%) were more common for those who wore dentures than for those who did not wear dentures (p<0.001). Compared to those who did not wear dentures, those who wore dentures were linked to a 1.665 times higher suspicion of dementia (p<0.001). In comparison, cognitive decline was 0.964 times lower when the number of natural teeth increased by 1, and it was 0.941 times lower when the oral health evaluation index for the elderly increased by 1 point (p<0.001). Conclusions: As a result of this study, it was confirmed that cognitive function and oral health status are related in the elderly. Therefore, systematic measures for oral health management and oral health promotion should be prepared in tandem with awareness of possible cognitive decline in the elderly.

Over the past five years, the number of patients with sleep disorders has increased by about 250,000 from 840,000 in 2017 to 1.09 million in 2021. In addition, sleep disorder is a factor that causes dementia risk factors, and furthermore, the population with sleep disorder is a very important policy issue in terms of stable health insurance financial management in the future in terms of national health management in the super-aging trend. Therefore, this study aims to establish an efficient treatment environment in medical institutions responsible for the current status of polysomnography and effective reimbursement policies for the recently increasing population with sleep disorders, and appropriate sleep management policies for future sleep disorders through correct implementation. We are trying to find out the actual condition and improvement plan through interviews with related organizations and experts.
