The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental hygienists, who played a significant role in dental sector, about health care management and their needs for education in an attempt to pave the way for the development of a Dental Hygienist Coordination System(DHCS). The subjects were 156 dental hygienists at 85 dental clinics, who were selected in Gwangju based on the data released as of August 2008 by the Dental Association and public health centers in sampling region. A Questionnaire was conducted in person to gather survey data and SPSS 12.0 program was utilized to make a statistical analysis. This results findings suggested that a systematic curriculum should be developed by focusing on coordination theory and practice, counseling and educational practice, health insurance affairs and health insurance fee claim management.
This study aims to develop digital techniques that enable repeated practice of dental radiography using augmented reality technology. A three-dimensional object was fabricated by superimposing a photograph of an adult model and a computed tomography image of a manikin phantom. The system was structured using 106 radiographs such that one of these saved radiographs is opened when the user attempts to take a radiograph on a mobile device. This system enabled users to repeatedly practice at the pre-clinical stage without exposure to radiation. We attempt to contribute to enhancing dental hygienists' competency in dental radiography using these techniques. However, a system that enables the user to actually take a radiograph based on face recognition would be more useful in terms of practice, so additional studies are needed on the topic.
The objective of the current study is to provide basic data necessary for the development of systematic program that is required for the systematic occupational work training of dental hygienists who newly employed at dental hospitals or clinics. The results of the surveys were listed as in below. The survey was conducted for 175 experienced dental hygienists who are in charge of occupational work training in 6 regions(Seoul, Kyunggi, Busan, Ulsan, Kwangju, Chungnam, Kyungnam) of the country where the occupational work training for new dental hygienists is systematically operated. 1. The recognition of experienced dental hygienists for the importance of occupational work training revealed that image training was the most importantly recognized by dental hygienists in Seoul Kyunggi regions(pE.01). In case of Busan region, periodontic training and conservative dentistry training were the most importantly recognized, and customer service training was mostly highly recognized in Ulsan region(pE.01). In case of Kwangjuregion, dental health insurance claim training was recognized as most important subject, and Patient consultation training was the most importantly recognized in Chungnam region. In case of Kyungnam region. Oral surgery was recognized as the most important training subject. 2. Regard on the importance of the range of occupational work training, the experienced dental hygienists with less than 2 years of experience were found to recognize the training of greeting and naming most importantly, the dental hygienists with 2~3 years of experience most importantly recognized oral surgery, and the dental hygienists with 4~5 year of experience were found to recognize conservative training most importantly. In case of dental hygienists having 6~9 year of experience recognized periodontic and conservation trainings as the most important subjects, and the dental hygienist having more than 10 years of experience were found to recognize conservative and image trainings mostly importantly.

Purpose : The study was to promote patient safety by analyzing the effect of dental hygienist's perception of patient safety culture on infection control activities. Methods : The study is based on a survey of 210 dental hygienists in total working in dental settings. To find out infection control activities according to patient safety culture awareness, there were 6 general characteristics, 3 teamwork within the department, 2 infection control systems, 4 surface management, 9 equipment washing, disinfection, and laundry management, 4 infectious wastes, and 3 personal protection phrases. The data was analyzed using the SPSS version 20.0, and p<.05 was adopted to decide on significance. Results : The longer dental hygienists have worked n the dental settings, the more active they become in infection control activities. Among the different types of dental care settings, general (university) hospitals had the largest number of infection control activities, followed by dental clinics, and network dental clinics, in descending order. The dental settings possessing a higher number of dental hygienists were found to conduct more infection control activities than other dental settings. In addition, it was found that when a dental setting adopts a patient safety policy across all the units in the hospital, more systems and procedures for patient safety tend to be established, and that stricter management response to error leads to improvement of infection control activities. Conclusion :In order to enhance infection control activities, infection control activity programs should develop and implement periodic reinforcement of infection control education. regular monitoring of infection control activities.

Dentists and dental hygienists are major collaborators, as expressed by the concept of "Four-handed dentistry." Dentists are guaranteed their legal duties and rights in accordance with the Medical Act, whereas dental hygienists are currently stipulated in the scope of their legal duties under the Act on Medical Technicians. However, there is a difference between the actual work and the legal work performed by dental hygienists; therefore, the work is dependent on many legal controversies and authoritative interpretations. The purpose of this study is, first, to develop a reliable questionnaire tool regarding the actual work performed by dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics, and second, to examine the awareness of the appropriateness of legal work based on the developed questionnaire. The target subjects of the survey were dental hygienists and dentists, and the dental hygienists were those who worked in dental hospitals and clinics as license reporters of the Korean Dental Hygienists Association. A total of 1,294 dental hygienists and 39 dentists were included in the final analysis. In the dental hygienist group, 19 items received the response "appropriate for legal work" in over 90% of cases, accounting for 25% of the total 76 items. In addition, in a total of 31 items, more than 80% of the responses were appropriate for legal work. Among them, the highest was 'Scailing' (97.7%), followed by "Extraoral-Panorama" (97.1%). In the dentist group, 10 out of 76 items showed over 90% adequacy for legal work, and among them, "instrument cleaning and sterilization" was the highest at 100%. It was followed by "Intraoral radiography," "Scailing," and "Toothpick method, TPM" with 97.4%. In the case of dentists, 28 out of a total of 76 items showed an appropriateness of more than 80% for legal work. This study comprehensively investigated the actual work of dental hygienists in line with timely and appropriate social issues and provided reliable statistics in evidence-based dentistry.

Impression taking is one of the most frequently performed tasks within the legal scope of dental hygienists. This study aims to compare traditional impression and digital impression taking in various aspects with dental hygienists who have experience using digital intraoral scanners. A total of 61 subjects were included in this analysis. Traditional and digital impression taking were compared, and the perception of intraoral scanners was classified into four factors through exploratory factor analysis. After a normality test of the main variables was performed, a non-parametric test was performed. In terms of the adequacy of the size of the tool inserted into the oral cavity, traditional impression taking was more positive, and there was no significant difference in the precision of impression taking, fit of the prosthesis, and time efficiency. In contrast, the digital intraoral scanner was positive in terms of reducing nausea. In the comparison between the items of the digital intraoral scanner, relatively low satisfaction was shown in terms of convenience of use. This study compared traditional impression taking based on the experience of dental hygienists using oral scanners. It is hoped that this will be one step closer to universalization. In addition, appropriate training on how to use them should be provided.

This study aimed to assess dental hygiene students' and other medical personnel's knowledge of dental hygienists' legal responsibilities. A self-reported questionnaire was conducted for 2 weeks from March 25 to April 9, 2017. One of the main questions focused on the legal scope of practice for dental hygienists according to current medical technicians. A total of 298 subjects' responses were analyzed. We found that 62.1% of the respondents were aware of dental hygienists' legal responsibilities. Of the dental hygiene students surveyed, 93.6% replied that they were aware of other medical personnel's expectations. Responses to 12 legal questions were shown to have different distributions depending upon the level of dental hygienist education. Overall, knowledge of dental hygienist legal responsibilities was more comprehensive for senior students in each legal topic. However, few students (1.7%) answered all 12 legal questions correctly. In conclusion, dental hygiene students' awareness of their profession's legal scope should be improved. In addition, the Korean Dental Hygienists Association needs to more actively promote understanding of the profession's legal scope as well as of medical personnel's expectations of dental hygienists' legal roles.
