  • The purpose of this study was to develop prototype of virtual reality(VR) simulation with malocclusion models and evaluate its applicability. Task abilities, task completion time, and a satisfaction survey were compared between dentist trainees and dental students. Participants were instructed to observe virtual malocclusion models and then performed three tasks to diagnose the type of malocclusion, determine clinical findings and develop treatment plans. Their satisfaction with the simulation experience were evaluated using a questionnaire containing five questions. Task abilities of trainees related to clinical features and treatment plans were significantly higher than that of students(p < 0.01). In both groups, the task completion time for the second case was significantly reduced compared to that for the first case(p < 0.01). The satisfaction survey showed high scores and positive responses for this simulation in both groups. If the prototype of VR simulation is continuously advanced, it will be applicable for orthodontic education in pediatric dentistry.

  • Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor of systemic health and also impairs oral health, which is related to development of oral cancers, periodontitis, delayed wound healing, tooth loss, failure of implant, etc. Aside from smoking, many other risk factors can be related to oral health and long-term effects of smoking on salivary flow and taste threshold are still in controversy. Authors considered dental students to be an appropriate group with good oral hygiene for a long-term study to reveal effects of smoking on oral health. This study was performed to compare smoking patterns and current oral health conditions between smokers and nonsmokers in dental students prior to long-term evaluation. 192 volunteers (85.7%) of 224 male dental students in Dankook University were evaluated through questionnaires and clinical examination in 2010. Questionnaires included smoking pattern, alcohol use, nicotine dependence, preventive care, psychological profile and clinical examinations comprised assessment of teeth or periodontal status, nicotine pigmentation, salivary flow, electrical taste thresholds and halitosis. From the study, (current) smokers were older, and drank more frequently with more alcohol intake compared to former smokers and nonsmokers(p<0.05). There was no significant difference among them in salivary flow rate, halitosis and electrical taste threshold. However, there was significant difference in DMFT rate, periodontal treatment need, nicotinic pigmentation between smokers and nonsmokers(p<0.05), irrespective of their levels of preventive care. The smokers in this study, who are young dental students with relatively shorter duration of smoking, less use of cigarettes and low level of nicotine dependence, did not reveal significant impairment of oral health. However, their oral health was found to be relatively impaired compared to nonsmokers', which suggests negative effect of smoking on the oral health and a need of smoking cessation.

  • This study conducted a survey to find out the opinions on oral health behavior and oral health education according to gender in health and non-health college students. According to the research results, there were many girls in the health-realted field and boys in the non-health-related college students. Among the oral health behaviors, brushing in school was common in both boys and girls in the health-related college students, and professional oral health education experiences were also found in the health-related college students. The need for oral health education among male students was 76.4% for healh-related college students, 48.3% for non-health-related college students, whereas female health-related college students showed 80.3%, and non-health -related college students were 60.4%. Participation in oral health education in order of male health-related students, male non-health-related students, female health-related students, and female non-health-related students were 81.9%, 68.1%, 84.8% and 73.3% respectively. The preferred method of oral health education was experiential education such as brushing for both male and female in the health-related college students, and lectures by dentists or dental hygienist were the highest reponse for non-health-related college students. The preferred location for oral health education was highest in schools. Through the results of this study, it was considered necessary to develop and disseminate appropriate oral health education programs according to college students' majors and gender, and to form correct oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors for oral health through oral health education.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the shaping ability of three Ni-Ti file systems used by dental students or the experts and consequently to aid in choosing a proper systems for educational courses of dental students and beginners. Fifty students and ten dentists who have clinical experience over two years prepared 180 simulated root canals in resin blocks with three Ni-Ti systems; $ProFile^{(R)}\;(PF),\;HeroShaper^{(R)}\;(HS),\;K3^{TM}\;(K3)$. After preparation, the Ni-Ti files were evaluated for distortion and canal preparation time was recorded. The images of pre- and post-instrumented canals were scanned and superimposed. Amounts of increased canal widths, deviation, and centering ratio were calculated at apical 1, 3 and 5 mm levels and statistical analysis was performed The results were as follows : 1. HS showed the shortest preparation time and instrumented canal width in K3 was significantly larger than other groups (P<0.05). 2. At 1 and 3mm levels, all groups had outward deviation. In student group, at the 1mm level, PF had the least deviation (P<0.05). 3. In the centering ratio, the PF had the best centering ability compared to the others at 5mm level. At 1 and 3mm levels, HS and PF had better abilities than K3. Student group had better ratio than the expert at 3mm level with PF (P<0.05). Based on the results, it is surmised that the $ProFile^{(R)}$ is the safest and most ideal instrument for students and beginners.
