A new measuring technique for the rigidities of stiffened plated is presented. The equations relating the rigidities of stiffened plates and the natural frequencies of a cantilever plate are derived and the rigidities are determined using the measured natural frequencies of the plate. The static deflection tests are conducted for checking the validity of this method. For unstiffened plates the measured rigidities are good agreement with the theoretical values and the experimental results of deflection tests. In the case of stiffened plates the measured rigidities closely matched with the results of deflection tests. It has been also demonstrated that this measuring technique can be utilized in determining the rigidities of arbitrarily stiffened plates.

A two-dimensional cross-section analysis program based on the finite element method has been developed for composite blades with solid, thin-walled and compound cross-sections. The weighted-modulus method is introduced to determine the laminated composite material properties. The shear center and the torsion constant for any given section are calculated according to the Trefftz' definition and the St. Venant torsion theory, respectively. The singular value problem of cross-section stiffness properties faced during the section analysis has been solved by performing an eigenvalue analysis to remove the rigid body mode. Numerical results showing the accuracy of the program obtained for stiffness, offset and inertia properties are compared in this analysis. The current analysis results are validated with those obtained by commercial software and published data available in the literature and a good correlation has generally been achieved through a series of validation study.
Since the mechanical properties of the rubber connectors used in the vehicle structures are sensitive on the dynamic characteristics of the system, they must be exactly evaluated. In this paper, both finite deformation theory and Hookean model are considered to calculate the stiffness coefficients of rubber connectors. An expert system is developed by using finite element method. When the equivalent stiffness coefficients on the same kinds of isolators used in actual vehicles were emperically examined, the results were largely dispersed due to the lack of the quality control on the material properties. To compensate the errors caused by the mathematical modeling and the mechanical properties, a practical method which identifies the shear and bulk moduli of rubber with the experimented overall force-deformation curves is suggested and applied to the engine isolators of vehicle.

In this study, the accuracy and efficiency of a composite rotor blade cross-section analysis program, Ksec2d-AE, which is available at an educational web-based platform called EDISON-CSD, are assessed for possible use in undergraduate structural analysis projects. To this purpose, the convergence of cross-sectional constants by varying the number of finite elements in the cross-section of a wind turbine blade is investigated. The stiffness constants along with the cross-sectional engineering offsets obtained using Ksec2d-AE are validated against a 3D finite element analysis program MSC NASTRAN.

The thickness optimization of the gearbox housing for 5MW wind turbine is carried out with the help of the efficient structure analysis model and the approximation model of objective function. Wind turbine gearbox is a complex structural system composed of a number of gear trains, shafts, bearing and gearbox housing, requiring a tremendous number of elements for the structural analysis and design. In this paper, an effective analysis and design model considering the tooth stiffness of helical gears is proposed. It enables to significantly reduce the total element number and the analysis time. Through the numerical optimization of housing thickness making use of the effective gearbox model and the approximate model of objective function, the total weight of the gearbox housing is minimized. It has been observed from the numerical experiment that the approximation model is reliable and the optimization result is acceptable and verified analysis.
A stiffness model has been proposed to predict elastic constants of twisted yam composites. The model is based upon the unit cell structure, the coordinate transformation, and the volume averaging of compliance constants for constituent materials. For the correlation of analytic results with experiments, composite samples of various yam twist angles were tested, and strength and Young's modulus under tensile, compressive, and shear loading have been obtained. The sample was fabricated by the RTM process using glass yarns and epoxy resin. The correlations of elastic constants showed relatively good agreements. The model provides the predictions of the three-dimensional engineering constants, which are valuable input data for the analytic characterization of textile composites made of twisted yam.

The paper presents a direct method for the diplacement control and stiffness redesign using displacement and response force contribution factors. At first, these two kinds of factors are derived and the relationship between them is examined. An equation to evaluate the change of displacement according to the change of each member stiffness is proposed. For the statically determinate structures, the proposed equation gives the exact solution with no approximation. But it has some error in case of statically indeterminate structures because the redistribution of response forces is neglected in the equation. However, the equation may be very useful even for statically indeterminate structures because it provides the relationship between the member stiffness and the global displacement. The proposed method is expected to be useful for the displacement control of large space or hi-rise building structures where the stiffness design governs the design result.

In constructing the multi-body dynamics model to analyze the behavior of the railway vehicle, it is very important to understand the properties of the suspension elements that constitute the suspension system. Among them, coil springs, which are mainly used in primary and secondary suspension systems, clearly show the axial stiffness in the drawings, but the lateral properties of the coil springs are not specified clearly, making it difficult to construct a dynamic analysis model. Therefore, in this paper, the model for analyzing the lateral stiffness of the coil spring is examined. A finite element method was applied to analyze the lateral stiffness of the coil spring and numerical analysis was performed by applying the coil spring lateral stiffness analysis model proposed by Krettek and Sobczak. And the test to analyze the lateral stiffness of coil spring was conducted. As a result of comparing with the test results, it was found that the results obtained by applying the lateral stiffness analysis model of Krettek and Sobczak and correcting the correction coefficient are similar to those of the test results.
An Inverse modal perturbation method was applied to estimate the assessments of the damages at the large-scaled marine structure, such as pier or dolphin, from the structural dynamic natural frequencies and mode shape. Vibrations of structural stiffness, natural frequencies and mode shapes from the eigenvalue analysis lead to the modal peturbation equations, which were considered with a second order term. This paper estimates the assessments of the damages for the structure with the decreased stiffness and shows the convergence of perturbation equation.
