The soot formation and oxidation characteristics with different radiation boundary conditions have been studied experimentally in a co-flow ethylene/air laminar diffusion flame. The boundary conditions are two cases, one is a fully refractive radiation boundary condition by a polished aluminum cylinder(AL) and the other is a fully absorbing radiation boundary condition by a black body cylinder(BB). The AL case compared with BB condition show the lower inception point, denser soot volume fraction, wider and longer annular soot area owing to the reabsorption of radiating energy.
The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM in a co-flowing, propane/air laminar diffusion flame. The average size of mature soot particles deposited in the luminous flame edge is strongly dependent on their axial position in a typical heavily sooting flame. The surface growth of liquid-phase PAHs molecules and the transition to soots from fully-developed precursors could be observed in the radial deposition of the flame. Two sooting regimes were found: one is the transition from the condensed-phase precursors; the other is the aggregation of smaller soot particles (or chains of them) to be carried along particle path lines. In the high temperature flame edge outside the soot luminous flame surface, the very thin fiber-like structures, which are about 10 nm thick, were found.
The distribution of volume fraction, mean diameter and number density of soot particles are measured quantitatively in a co-flow ethylene diffusion flame using a simultaneous LII/LIS measurement technique. The LII/LIS system and the measured values are, respectively, calibrated and evaluated by comparing to the informations obtained from laser light. extinction/scattering experiments, LII signal shows some sensitivity to the laser light intensity when laser power density exceeds a certain value(threshold). It is also found that there is an optimal laser intensity and a delay time in order to obtain the best result using the simultaneous LII/LIS measurement technique.

We experimentally investigated lifted propane jet flames diluted with nitrogen to obtain flame-stability maps based on heat-loss-induced self-excitation. We found that heat-loss-induced self-excitations are caused by conductive heat loss from premixed flame branches to trailing diffusion flames as well as soot radiation. The conductive-heat-loss-induced self-excitation at frequencies less than 0.1 Hz is explained well by a suggested mechanism, whereas the oscillation of the soot region induces a self-excitation of lift-off height of the order of 0.1 Hz. The suggested mechanism is also verified from additive experiments in a room at constant temperature and humidity. The heat-loss-induced self-excitation is explained by the Strouhal numbers as a function of the relevant parameters.

The present study has been motivated by the development of a reliable numerical methodology for simulation of kerosene/LOx coaxial swirl injectors. To deal with thermodynamic non-ideality and anomalies of transport properties pronounced at supercritical pressures, a set of subroutine libraries has been constructed based on the cubic equations of state, and applied to an existing flamelet analysis code. For computational efficiency, two-dimensional axisymmetric RANS formulation with swirl was adopted and validated successfully against an isothermal coaxial swirling jet. For the actual problem with high pressure combustion, however, numerical results show that the RANS models yield excessive production of turbulence probably due to high density gradient magnitude in the vicinity of mixing layer of swirling film flow, and imply strongly further improvement of the turbulence models.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the flame propagation speed, radiation range, diffusion pattern and combustion completion time of a fire by filling a divided space with single combustible substance. It was found that the flame propagation speed was the fastest (0.2 s) for kerosene and the lowest (82.1 s) for alcohol. In the case of paint thinner, it took 19.0 s for the flame to reach its peak at the fastest speed after ignition while in the case of alcohol, it took 138.6 s for the flame to reach its peak at the lowest speed. In the case of the combustion of 200 ml of flammable liquids, the combustion completion time was 79.9 s for paint thinner, which is the shortest, 135 s for gasoline, 170 s for kerosene, 231.4 s for diesel and 337.0 s for alcohol. In addition, when flammable liquids are combusted, the lower part of the flame is governed by laminar flow pattern and the upper part of the flame showed turbulence pattern. In the case of a test performed for bean oil, it could be seen that if the fire source was removed, the flame was automatically extinguished without further combustion and that white smoke was generated due to incomplete combustion.
The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM and compared with UV-excited laser induced broadband fluorescences in co-flowing, propane laminar diffusion flames in a reduced oxidizer environment. The homogeneous morphology of droplet-like deposits inner flame zone and the agglomeration of condensed-phase deposits and the transition to soots from grown up droplet-like precursors with approaching the flame surface can be observed in a barely sooting flame. The average size of the mature soots deposited in the luminous flame edge is scarcely dependent on their axial position in a confined flame under reduced oxidizer condition. A double structure of PAH fluorescence is observed in near-extinction flames with further decreasing of oxidizer. A comparison of the PAH fluorescence with the morphologies of deposits indicates that appearance of the "dark" hollow zone is caused by a decreased number density of developed liquid-phase large molecules and the outer weak fluorescence zone is caused by the diffusion of gas-phase small molecules.
Soot generation by combustion process has been investigated with objective of understanding of chemical reaction responsible for its formation in a coaxial laminar propane jet diffusion flame. For the direct photos, as the coflowing air flow rate is reduced, the area of soot luminous zone increases at first, then becomes smaller and smaller, and even disappears. The aspects of soot deposition can be acquired by using nine $15{\mu}m$ thin SiC fibers are positioned horizontally across the flame. Deposited soots on SiC fibers show the soot inception point and growth and soot oxidation zone in a typical propane diffusion. Soot is not generated anymore in a oxidizer deficient conditions of near-extinction and flame is fully occupied by transparent blue flame. It suggests that nonsooting pyroligneous blue reaction is being dominant in a oxidizer deficient ambience. In comparison with luminosities of SiC fibers and flame itself, indirect evidence is found that the process of soot nucleation and growth is endothermic reaction. It is remarkable that there exists two adjacent regions to have antithesis characteristics; one is exothermic reaction of blue flame and another endothermic reaction zone of soot formation.
In this study, soot formation characteristics on the instability of laminar diffusion flames were investigated experimentally using a concentric co-flow burner. When a small amount of air was supplied through an inner nozzle, a stable propane laminar diffusion flame became unstable and began to oscillate mainly due to the dilution effect. The increase of air flow rate transformed an oscillating non-sooting flame into a stable nonsooting flame. When the air flow rate was continuously increased an inner flame was formed and the flame was changed to an oscillating sooting flame, an oscillating non-sooting flame and finally a stable non-sooting hollow flame. When the air flow rate was decreased, a non-sooting hollow flame was eventually changed back to a stable non-sooting flame. The presence of an inner flame, however, altered the soot formation characteristics of a flame. More soot production was observed with the presence of an inner flame. The increased or decreased soot formation/oxidation rates, the radiation heat loss, and the heating effect of inner flames are most likely to be responsible for the observed instability of laminar diffusion flames.

An study has been performed with axisymmetric coflow diffusion flames to investigate the influence of air-side fuel side dilution and initial preheated temperature on the soot formation in methan/air flames. Soot quantities are determined by using PLII(Planar Laser Induced Incandescence), such a $C_2$H$_2$ major species(CH$_4$, $O_2$, $N_2$) and temperature are simulated by chemkin code. The numerical analysis was performed with transport properties and detailed reaction mechanisms m axisymmetric coflow diffusion flames. The study of how flame temperature and $N_2$ dilution of air and fuel side influence the soot concentrations is focused. Soot concentrations results on PLII show that preheated temperature contributes to an increase in the soot volume fraction, and soot formation Is more productive to air side dilution than to fuel side dilution. $C_2$H$_2$ concentrations have a similar tendency to soot concentrations.
