  • The purpose of this study is to grasp the opinion of Korean feminine seniors on the life support appliances for their healthy ageing: medication dispenser, video phone, activity monitor and sleep monitor. The focus group interviews, asking the usability of the appliances, were answered by each 6 feminine seniors of more than 65 years, residing in Corvallis of U.S.(group I), Cheongju(group II), and Ulsan(group III) of Korea. The results are as follows. (1) The medication dispenser proved to be very useful to all the respondents. All the seniors, who take more than one medicine a day, felt it helpful that the medication dispenser makes them to take medicines at fixed time. In addition, they hoped the medicine envelope to be developed for the dispenser use by the supply side. (2) The seniors showed interest in the manner the video phone works; to work by the voice, rather than by the finger. They expressed the hope of the video phone to display the communication contents, in consideration of their weakening hearing. (3) The seniors who live alone, especially, felt intimacy to the activity monitor, thinking as if some helpers were beside them. The fact that it can send emergency calls immediately when situations happen, gave the seniors emotional safety as a patron. (4) The sleep monitor, although essential to the serious cases without moving ability, was proved less necessary to the healthy seniors. They expressed the hope of this appliance to be evolved for the use with the mattress without bed.

The respondents were 141 female seniors of 65 years and older, living in Ulsan city or Cheongju city, Korea. Following is the list of results. (1) The medication dispenser, responded as highly preferred, met some worries over the troubles by power stoppage especially while one is out, letting her forget the medication time. (2) The video phone was worried over the cases of hearing failure by small sound, and watching failure by weakening sight. (3) The activity monitor, like the medication dispenser, was worried about the troubles while one is out or out of the monitoring scope, its expense, and the privacy, (4) The sleep monitor met the worries over the inadequacy for the sleeping mat on the floor and the emission of electromagnetic waves. (5) The preferred designs were (1) white or red standing medication dispenser, (2) wall-mounted video phone working by voice, (3) metal activity monitor sensor with white or yellow bracelet.

  • Fluid is normally used so that certain drug can be administered to patients for certain period of time. There are many incidents in which patients or guardians need to call upon medical staff after estimating the time of fluid injection termination. In case fluid injection is terminated during certain period such as sleeping time or others, it may cause more fatigue for either patients or guardians. Also, it may lead to ineffective work as medical staff needs to monitor the quantity of fluid several times in order to check the time of fluid injection termination. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose LBS system combined of minimum equipment and active RFID to monitor the level of fluid in order to solve abovementioned problems. Also, it is expected to enhance the quality of medical service with service in which real-time monitoring of fluid quantity and patient location is conducted to provide accurate information to either patients, guardians, or medical staff(nurse) so that medical staff can locate and see patients at the time of fluid injection termination.

  • This paper suggests detection system for the movement of patient on bed based on IEEE802.15.4 by using pressure pad and guard sensor. The system is designed to detect ordinary activities of patients on bed as well as patients' falling from the bed while sleeping at night. The node that is installed at bed sends data to gather when the pressure pad and sensor of guard detect patients' activities and falling. These data sent to gather are transmitted to monitor at help desk by TCP/IP communication. To remove unnecessary data that occurred due to switch chattering during tossing and turning, timer of MCU is used. Also, Communication module can change transmission power to apply this system to various environments of hospital room. Therefore, the nurse can take care of patients on bed in real time with data about patients' conditions.
