The total polyphenol contents and antioxidative activities of water and ethanol extracts from Synurus excelsus and Synurus palmatopinnatifidus var. palmatopinnatifidus were determined. Total polyphenol contents of ESE and ESP were 195.7 and 216.2 mg/g, and were higher than WSE (74.7 mg/g) and WSP (77.4 mg/g). The total flavonoid contents were also higher in ESE (176.6 mg/g) and ESP (148.8 mg/g) than WSE and WSP. DPPH radical scavenging activities of ESE and ESP (73.1 and 73.4%) were higher than WSE and WSP as like total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Although the DPPH radical scavenging activities of the extracts were proportional to total polyphenol contents, there are no differences between water extracts and ethanol extracts of Synurus excelsus and Synurus palmatopinnatifidus on ABTS radical scavenging activities. Moreover, all the solvent extracts (ESE, ESP, WSE and WSP) had no SOD-like activity. These results suggest that consideration for adoption of method is necessary to evaluate antioxidative activity of extracts from plants including vegetables.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether gifted achievers and gifted underachievers differ in their learning strategies, motivation, beliefs in ability, and problem solving patterns. The sample for the study consisted of 68 gifted achievers and 34 gifted underachievers who were in 5th and 6th grades in elementary schools in the metropolitan area. Gifted achievers and gifted underachievers showed statistically significant differences in all aspects using the independent sample t-test. In addition, the discriminant analysis correctly classified over 77.5% of the sample as either gifted achievers or gifted underachievers using the variables used in the study, indicating factors related to learning strategies can be effective measures to identify gifted achievers and underachievers. Especially, extrinsic motivation and problem solving patterns were the most discriminant factors in these two groups. The implications of the study related to the identification and education of the gifted underachievers were discussed in depth.

김영준사장은 작년 6월 동신화학 사장으로 취임한 직후부터 최근까지 6차례에 걸쳐 미국시장을 찾아 한국「타이어」수출을 위한 획기적인 성과를 안고 돌아왔다. 농림부장관을 퇴임한 후 부실기업인 흥한화섬을 맡아 일약 성장기업으로 키워놓고 다시 부실화된 동신화학을 재건중에 있는 그는 취임 11개월만인 지난 5월부터는 흑자기업으로 일으켜 세웠다. 해외시장 개척부진과 출혈수출로 작년도 「타이어」업계의 수출은 5백만달러선에 머무르고 있는데 김사장은 연 2천만달러의 장기계약을 미국의 「시어스ㆍ로박」과 체결함으로써 「타이어」대미수출의 전기를 마련하고 귀국 했다.<편집자주>

박영일 과학기술부 차관이 5월초로 취임 100일을 맞았다. 장관보다 일찍 취임한 ` ‘죄’로 100일 행사도 없이 조촐하게 넘어갔다는 박 차관. 그는 행시 출신으로 일찌감치 과기부에 입성한 인물이다. 당시만 해도 잘나가는 고시 출신들이 재경부 등 힘있는 부서를 택할 때 그는 과학이 미래 사회의 원동력이라고 생각해 과기부를 택했다고 한다. 그래서인지 동기들 중에 상당히 일찍 차관이 된 성공한 관료에 속한다. 박 차관을 만나 최근 현안이 되고 있는 여러 문제들에 대해 물어보았다. 그는“과학기술부총리 체제가 2기로 접어든 시점에 차관이 되어 영광으로 생각하며 아울러 막중한 책임감을 느낀다”고 밝혔다.

약 8개월간 공석으로 주인 없던 농림축산검역본부장에 박봉균 서울대학교 수의학과 교수가 임명되어 지난 2월 1일 취임식을 갖고 본격적인 업무에 돌입하였으며 앞선 작년 말에는 농림축산검역본부(이하 검역본부)가 경기도 안양에서 경북 김천 혁신도시로 이전하였다. 제3대 검역본부장으로 취임한 박봉균 본부장은 2015년 2월 '범정부 인사혁신 실천계획' 발표 이후 농림축산식품부 최초의 민간인 기관장이다. 박 본부장을 만나 취임 소감과 앞으로 3년간 검역본부를 이끌어갈 운영계획 등을 들어 보았다.
