Recently, study on the improvement of combustion performance for the diesel engine by using the impinging spray in the combustion chamber has been actively studied. The purpose of this study is to examine the variation of exhaust emission between the trial engine with impinging plate and the prototype engine in accordance with change of fuel injection timing and fuel injection pressure. The concentration of nitrogen oxide of trial engine decreased more than 50% compared to prototype engine. However, smoke of trial engine indicated very high concentration compared to prototype engine. The effect of fuel injection timing on the nitrogen oxide and smoke indicated different results, that is, the concentration of nitrogen oxide decreased as the degree of fuel injection start become slower, whereas the concentration of smoke decreased as the degree of fuel injection start become faster.

In a spray experiment using a venturi mounted on a lean premixed LPP injector, droplets appear to have non-uniform distributions. To solve this problem, the exit angle of the venturi was changed to form a dump surface on the nozzle neck. The dump surface improved the atomization performance and minimized droplet loss while forming recirculation zone in the venturi exit. In order to solve the non-uniform spray of the injector, the flow characteristics inside the venturi and SMD of the spray are compared. Finally, an optimum venturi shape is selected to minimize the spray loss and improve the spray performance.
A spray-wall impingement model for fuel sprays is proposed and implemented as a module into the KIVA-POSTECH code. The model is based on the single droplet experiments. The droplet behaviors after impingement are determined from experimental correlations. Different behaviors of impinged droplets depend on the wall temperature and the critical temperature of the fuel. Fuel film formation is taken into account so that the model can be applicable to any wall temperature and injection conditions. Computational results on a normal and on inclined wall are in good agreement for the spray shape and penetration. More validation against experiments and development of the heat transfer model are needed for further improvement.
The present article proposes a new droplet collision model including the stretching separation regime and the formation of satellite droplets. The new model consists of several equations to calculate the post-collision characteristics of colliding droplets and satellite droplets. These equations are derived from the energy balance of droplets between before and after collision. For binary collision of water droplets, the new model shows good agreement with experimental data far the number of satellite droplets.
This study describes the external spray characteristics of deflector nozzle such as the breakup procedures of liquid sheet, spray angle, discharge coefficient and bubble behaviors of spray and SMD at deflector nozzle. In order to visualize the spray behaviors shadow graphy technique were used. According to the increase of injection pressure, development of the spray passes through the dribbling, distoted jet, closed bubble due to the contraction by surface tension forces, the bubble opens into hollow tulip shape, and the curved surface straightened to form a conical sheet like as the simplex swirl atomizer. Spray cone angle was nearly 90 deg. Variations of SMD were examined in order to describe the dependency of SMD on the injection pressure and orifice diameter. The shape of deflector and oriffice diameter had an effect on the discharge coefficient.
In this paper an experimental study of a spray created by two impinging jets is presented utilizing a novel two-reference-beam double-pulse holographic technique. Visualization of the overall spray pattern as well as measurements on the size and velocity of the droplets were performed with the special emphasis on the effect of physical properties of liquids. The overall spray pattern clearly revealed the inherent wave nature In the disintegration process of this type of atomization. The structure of liquid elements near the impingement point is indicative of the mechanisms of the disintegration process. Surface tension plays an important role in the droplet size without any noticeable effect on the spray pattern, whereas viscosity affects the structure without any significant effect on the droplet sire. The droplet velocities were not affected by liquid properties.
The implementation of gelled propellants systems offers high performance, energy management of liquid propulsion, storability, and high density impulse of solid propulsion. The present study focused on the macroscopic spray characteristics of liquid sheets formed by triplet impinging jets of non-Newtonian liquids which are mixed by Carbopol 941 0.5%wt. The results are compared to experiments conducted on spray images which formed by triplet impinging jets concerning with airassist effect at center orifice. When gel propellants are injected by doublet impinging jets at low pressure and high pressure, closed rim pattern shape appeared by polymeric effect from molecular force and showed inactive atomization characteristics, because of extensional viscosity related by restriction of atomization process and breakup time delay of turbulence transition. As increasing mass flow rate of the air(increasing GAR), spray breakup level is also increased.
In this study, the velocity characteristics of liquid elements formed by two impinging jets is analysed using double pulse image capturing technique. For the droplets formed by low speed impinging jets, the droplet velocities are higher with smaller azimuthal and impingement angle. The maximum droplet velocities are about 25 % lower than jet velocity. With an increase of azimuthal angle, the shedding angles increases but remains lower than azimuthal angle. The velocities of ligaments formed by high speed impinging jets gradually decreases with an increase of azimuthal angle. The maximum ligament velocities are about 40% lower than jet velocity. Higher impingement angles produce lower ligament velocities. The shedding angles of ligament almost increases with the same value of azimuthal angle, which implies that the moving direction of ligaments is radial from the origin as the impingement point.

An experimental investigation was undertaken in a diesel spray to evaluate wall impingement behavior and droplet size distribution. Emphasis is placed on the possibility of the application for new combustion type which is based on OSKA-D type. Visualization were employed using optical scheme which was a spark shadowgraphy to observe the behavior of wall impingement caused by diesel spray vertically injected at the center of the combustion chamber. Droplet size measurements using Malvern system were made to quantify the visual observations with surface diameter of impingement. The effects of the surface dia. variation on the droplet size during injection with the wall impingement spray are discussed. It was found that for the wall impingement spray the droplet size becomes greatly small rather than the spray without the wall impingement and the droplet deposition rate of the injection fuel is decreased as the surface area of impingement becomes small.
