The impact response and damage of CLAS panel was investigated experimentally. The facesheet material used was RO4003 woven-glass hydrocarbon/ceramic and the core material was Nomex honeycomb with a cell size of 3.2mm and a density of 96 kg/$\textrm{m}^{3}$. The shield plane used was RO4003 and 2024-T3 aluminum. Static indentation and impact test was conducted to characterize the type and extent of the damage observed in two CLAS panels, and the performance of antenna used in a wireless LAN system. Correlation of peak contact force, residual indentation and the delamination area shows impact damage of the panel with an aluminum shield plane is larger than that of the panel with RO4003 shield plane, although tile former is more penetration resistant. The damage was observed by naked eye, ultrasonic inspection and cross sectioning. The shape and size of delamination was estimated by ultrasonic inspection, and the area of delamination linearly increases as impact energy increases. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring return loss and radiation pattern.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the applicability of acoustic emission(AE) technique to monitor the progress of the thermal shock damage on alumina ceramic. For this purpose, alumina ceramic specimen was heated in the furnace and then was quenched in the water tank. When the specimen was quenched in the water tank, complex AE signals due to the initiation of micro-cracks and boiling effect were generated by the progress of thermal shock damage. These mixed AE signals have to be classified for monitoring the degree of the thermal shock damage of alumina ceramics. In this paper, the mixed AE signals generated from both the boiling effect and the crack initiation under thermal shock test was analyzed. The characteristics of AE signals were also discussed by considering the variation of bending strength and Yongs modulus of specimens.
Fretting wear is one of the important degradation mechanisms of steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plants. Especially, impact fretting wear occurred between steam generator tubes and tube support plates or anti-vibration bar. Various tests have been carried out to investigate the wear mechanisms and to report the wear coefficients. Those are fruitful to get insight for the wear damage of steam generator tubes; however, most wear researches have concentrated on sliding wear of the steam generator tubes, which may not represent the wear loading modes in real plants. In the present work, impact fretting tests of steam generator tube were carried out. A wear progression model for impact-fretting wear has been investigated and proposed. The proposed wear progression model of impact-fretting wear is as follows; oxide film breaking step at the initial stage, and layer formation step, energy accumulation step and finally particle torn out step which is followed by layer formation in the stable impact-fretting progress. The wear coefficient according to the work-rate model has been also compared with one between tube and support.
The damage mechanism of $Cr_2O_3$ plasma coated soda-lime glass and uncoated glass by steel ball particle impact was analyzed in this study. And the shape variation of the cracks was investigated by stereo-microscope according to the impact velocity and steel ball diameter. In order to improve the damage reduction effect by $Cr_2O_3$ coating layer, crack size was measured and surface erosion state was observed for both of two kinds of specimen after impact experiment. And the results were compared with each other. The 4-point bending test was performed according to ASTM D790 testing method to evaluate the effect of coating layer for bending strength variation. As a result, it was found that the crack size of $Cr_2O_3$ coated specimen was smaller than that of uncoated one, because of the impact absorption by interior pores in the coating layer and the load dispersion by the structural characteristic of the coating layer. For the specimens subjected to the steel ball impact, the bending strength of coated specimen was higher than that of uncoated specimen.

Residual strength of fiber metal laminates after impact was studied. 3/4 lay up FML was fabricated using 4 ply prepreg, 2 ply aluminum sheets, and 1 ply steel sheet. Quasi isotropic ([0/45/90/-45]s) and orthotropic ([0/90/0/90]s) FRP were also fabricated to compare with FML. Impact test were conducted by using instrumented drop weight impact machine (Dynatup, Model 8250). Penetration load and absorbed energy of FML were superior to those of FRPs. Tensile tests were conducted to evaluate the residual strength after impact. Strength degradation of FML was less than that of FRP. This means that the damage tolerance of FML is excellent than that of FRP. Residual strength of each specimen was predicted by using Whitney and Nuismer(WN) Model. Impact damage area is assumed as a circular notch in WN model. Damage width is defined as the average of back face and top face damage width of each specimen. Average stress and point stress criterions were used to calculate the characteristic length. It is supposing that a characteristic length is a constant. The distribution of characteristic length shows that the assumption is reasonable. Prediction was well matched with experiment under both stress criterions.

Impact tests were conducted to study the effect of angle ply and metal laminate on impact damage characteristics of Fiber Metal laminates (FML). Impact tests were conducted using drop weight impact machine and damage behavior were analyzed by comparing with load-displacement curve and surface observation and microscopic observation of cross sections. The effect of angle ply on impact characteristics of FML are influenced by property of metal laminate. i.e., when the metal laminate is not enough to strong to prevent fiber debonding, Angle ply FML is superior to singly oriented ply (SOP) FML because angle ply enhance the stiffness by fiber supports and prevent (rack propagation. However, when the metal laminate is enough to strong to prevent fiber debonding, SOP FML is superior to Angle ply FML because the fiber of lower ply in Angle ply FML are more stressed than that of SOP FML.
In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.
The strainer can be clogged by dusts in a well. As a result, the permeability of a strainer is extremely reduced. This paper is intended to propose a cleaning method of strainer using blasting pressure of the detonating cords and to examine the applicability of this method. The pressure range that was not expected to affect the strainer was estimated. Test results of $3,000\;kg/cm^2$ pressure with a diameter of 12 cm without damage to the strainer was found to be appropriate. The mortar attached to the strainer was almost completely eliminated.

Brittle materials are very weak for impact because of typical characteristics which happen to be easily fractured with low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact due to small spheres, high contact pressure is occurred to impact surface and then local damage on specimen is developed, since there are little plastic deformations due to contact pressure compared to metals. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda lime glass by impact of small sphere is explained and the effects of the constraint conditions of impact spheres and materials for the material damage were studied by using soda-lime glass. that is the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring crack, cone crack and several kinds of cracks.
